Current PlayStation classics to be PS3 compatible in May
Sony has confirmed with IGN what Joystiq and the Fanboy sites discovered last night: current downloaded PlayStation Classic titles do not work on the PS3, despite its firmware upgrade. The problem is that two files -- the ROM and its certification key -- are needed for the PS One titles to work on the PSP, but that "such a system is not needed on the PlayStation 3," according to the article. We're not sure how this explains the console's inability to play the titles, but rest assured SCEA manager Al de Leon told IGN that, "we'll be replacing the older PS1 games with fixed versions sometime in May" and you will then be able to download the games directly to your hard drive.
Sony did not comment on whether or not previously-disabled multiplayer modes would be reinstated upon the May update.

Seeing as there is no new PSOne games released with the PSN update this week, I don't see the point of Sony releasing this feature with this firmware update. It would be sweet though if the disabled multiplayer modes are reinstated, especially now that PS2 controllers now work on the PS3 with rumble.

are the PS1 games gonna run in 320x240 on the PS3 like they do on the PSP? Cuz that would be lame.

I'm still shocked at how rumble in the controller somehow become this must-have thing. I remember when Starfox 64 came out with the rumble pak (first console game with rumble ever) and I thought it was fairly cool but everybody else was like "that's lame, stupid gimmick, feels like my pager is going off, etc.". I turn away for a bit and look back and suddenly rumble has become the greatest feature in the history of videogames. WTF? Was Nintendo just way ahead of their time, like always?

rumble is great, it seemed like a gimick back in the day (a wednesday -DC) but its feedback is almost needed now in my opinion. halo or nhl 2k7 (two games I play the most) would be lacking without it. When I check someone in nhl, the combination of the sound and the rumble add so much more then just seeing it on the screen. with halo, its a feedback direct to the person being shot or shooting, jumping, etc, especially usefull in multiplayer split screen (ever get confused when you hear gunshots on a 4 split screen and try to figure out if they are at you?).

You know what we get with the update though? I can play with my Dual shock 1 based custom joystick on my ps3! I can see my Street Fighter 3 3rd strike in HD via HDMI, and play with my Custom stick for PS2 using a USB adapter!

Rumble helps me incredibly with EBA. It's also funny to go on Cruisin' and fail at WTM.

It's sad when some programmer in his basement can make a playstion 1 emulator that runs ALL the playstation games with no problems, and Sony can't. Welcome to the new, frightening DRM hindered world of video games.

Will they work immediately when (if) eventually released in Europe
sheppy @ Apr 20th 2007 9:13AM
Yeah, this does seem like a pointless update. They should have held it back until the new PSX games were ready to rip.
Ali @ Apr 20th 2007 4:18PM
Cool so does this mean that Sony might actually get around to releasing something on the PSN, because despite all the flashy numbers of units sold in Europe the amount of stuff available on the PSN is a total joke.
So far there 0 PS1 games available.

PS3 SUCKS!! The PS3 could have been a sweet system if Sony wasnt in such a hurry to compete with the x-box 360.. Its like they just threw the system together in a matter of days! It has more problems and errors then can be fixed.
And the worst part of all, its freak’n $600(plus the price of games, controllers, and whatever else). This system is supposed to be for kid/teens and unless these kids/teens are spoiled brats(which most are), they’re NOT going to have the money to purchase one!
SONY NEEDS TO RETHINK THEIR PRODUCT(AND ACTUALLY PUT SOME TIME INTO IT) AND PUT A SELLING PRICE AT A MAX OF $400..
Sin @ Apr 23rd 2007 10:10AM
Geeze I can't believe people are still complaining about the $600 price tag! This is still cheap compared to systems in the past (Neo Geo comes to mind) and it's not the only one thats needed updates and remodeling also. it's been a year and the 360 still has it's issues.
And to assume that the system is just for kids/teens is completely insane to think. If that were true then games like Grand Theft Auto or Resident Evil would never be made.
And to think that only spoiled rich kids are going to be getting this from there parents is also is also for from the truth since a friend of mine saved up for said Neo Geo at the time while working a summer job and paid the $100(!) per game luckily he bought the Neo Geo CD because the cartridge based system the games were $150. So yes the system is a bit expensive it has some problems that'll eventually be fixed but at the end of the day if the games that come out for it are great then thought slightly more work try pulling out the old generation system and play till your hearts content but that would mean I would have to assume you didn't trade in your old systems for something shiny and new.

I'm just responding to Joe's comment about the PS3. Sony didn't rush on developing their system to compete with the xbox360, in fact Microsoft rushed their development just so they can be the first ones out there, and with that came a ton of issues with the xbox360 (the 3 red lights of death, over heating, faulty backwards compalibility). I "HAD" a 360. Within 5months the damn thing died on me with the 3 red lights and Microsoft said it was due to hardware failure. I sent it to get fixed and when i got it back and played it the following day, the same thing happened again, in less than 24hrs! Xbox has had more problems than the ps3 period. As for the price tag and the demographic that sony has with the ps3, $600+ isn't bad for new technology that might change the face of how we view movies and games, also sony is aiming at the ages of those 18-30 year old people, to say this is a system for kids and teens is not entirely true, most people who own it can afford so stop hating.

PS3 does suck. At least for now. Honestly this whole next generation was rushed. Nintendo knew that graphics aren't everything. Sony is in a bad situation right now, how could anyone think otherwise? the psp has lost to ds, and ps3 is not selling. plus they are losing exclusives left and right. ps3 has some promise down the road, but lets hope developers don't abandon sony before that.
