The PlayStation 3 firmware has updated to 1.7, which purportedly allows you to play your downloaded PS One titles on the console itself. Here's what else got updated:
- Your PSOne and PS2 controllers and accessories will now rumble.
- You can now use PSOne save files from your PSP on the PS3.
The PSP firmware also received an upgrade to 3.4. Unfortunately, we are having serious issues with playing PS One games that are already saved on our PSP -- namely, it's not working at all-- but the console is properly detecting our PSP save files. Our
fanboy brethren are also experiencing similar issues. Will the PS Store update and offer users compatible files?
[
Update: Sony has acknowledged the issue; it will be
fixed in May.]

They've got me a step closer to buying one. Only thing I'd like to see in regards to backwards compatibility is a guarantee that the saves will be able to jump from the PS3 to the next generation system. Ideally, it would make sense just to use Memory Sticks as the new standard. I'm a bit wary of putting all my PS1/PS2 memcards into the PS3 and having them not able to advance further once the PS3 is replaced.

Finally!
This is a great boost for PSN. The combo of Original downloadable games + downloadable PS1 classics easily trumps Xbox Live's offerings and even gives the virtual console a bit of competition (just a little, though). Plus, you can still play your old PS1 discs if you happen to have them. It's win-win for retro PS1 goodness.

Ummm...I guess you need to have the limited edition PS3 that has PSX/PS2 controller ports on it to use that functionality?
What PSOne and PS2 controllers are they talking about?
"The combo of Original downloadable games + downloadable PS1 classics easily trumps Xbox Live's offerings"
Only, the PS1 "classics" so far have all been garbage. PSN has a long way to go before it's anywhere near XBLA, let alone trumping it. It's definitely got potential for downloadable games(I'm all about LittleBigPlanet) but PS1 downloads are a non-factor for me.

The way to plug your PS2 controller to the PS3 is via a USB adapter. You could get them for under 10$ at RadioShack.

It could have worked...if that piece of crap one-time-use "converter" they sold worked both ways. I think they screwed the pooch on that one. Would have made more sense to just make the device right: a dedicated external device that interfaced via USB, HDD, and Memory Stick slot. So you could put cards in, copy to the HDD and/or Memory Stick, copy back to memcards, etc.

Hearts 2 on a PAL PS3

GT3 and SSX3 were my only unsupported titles.
Sony have done a fantastic job with software BC, even the Sony haters are having problems finding faults...

There is a possible workaround for this. If you buy a Pelican Codebreaker, it allows you to access the USB port on the PS2 in order to transfer saves, codes, etc. from a pen drive to a memory card. Therefore, if you're able to save your data to a pendrive on the PS3, then you can use this method to get your saves on to a PS2 memory card.

Go to your system settings...
Go to your display settings ans select custom then check the 720p & 1080i (and 1080p if your tv can output this)
Go to BR output settings and make sure your it is set up to output 720p & 1080i...
Mine also upscales DVD's up to 720p. What kind of tv do you have. Sony said some tv's will fuck up the display resolution.

and burn them to a disc If you don't have your PS3 hook up to the internet. Who doesn't have access to at least a nearby computer to download updates, but can afford a $600 + system.
I just want the new rumble controllers to come out. God of War II really begs for some rumble.

I mean really you guys want online capabilities and features but you don't want have to download updates all the time? The XBL community has been doing that for a few years and even before them, PC's games and services has been doing for a decade and half. Welcome to 21 century people, plugin and update yourselves.

Selecting 720p and 1080i means it will output 1080i, which isn't 720p.
Also I can't see anywhere in Blu-Ray settings where you get to define output resolution.
Also the PS3 doesn't upscale DVDs so it must be your display doing that.
If you have a 1080i only or 720p only TV, Sony hates you.

That is a bold, bold claim. We already know that PSOne classics don't have the retro girth of the old 2D games. PS1 games are generally ugly to today's quality 3D standards (although the cartoonish games survive quite well...XENOGEARS!).
I'd like Intelligent Qube, FF7, and FF8...but I already have those. Not much is worth going back for when there's a last or current gen equivalent in most cases.
"What about being able to copy PS2 saves from the PS3 BACK to PS2 Memory Cards? Is that currently possible? I've heard this isn't allowed."
No, it doesn't. This annoyed the hell out of me. First you buy a $15 memory card adapter that doesn't come with a USB cable...making it worthless if you don't have one (I had misplaced the one that came with the PS3...so it was driving me nuts). All the adapter is good for is dumping your PS2 mem cards to the PS3 hard drive...you can't work between a PS2 and PS3 with a game save. It's annoying as hell.

What do you do if the 1.7 upgrade dies and doesn't display anything after downloading it ? Just pulled the "Upgrade" and i guess it failed, which now means i have a heavy paper wieght, switches on and does nothing else, does't display on screen so can't see/do anything with it ,Any knowledge would be appreciated, thanks in advance , Andy
