Idle hands are the Devil's playthings ... or they end up
making some pretty neat crafts. In this case, Will D'Angelo of TheWiicast.com, made a pretty nifty homage to
Donkey Kong with this clock. The timepiece combines images easily found using a Google search -- in this case
Donkey Kong and Big Mario from
Super Paper Mario -- with some basic materials from a craft store. D'Angelo says you need, with approximate costs:
- Clock kit from Michaels craft store ($8)
- The vintage sign kit, which includes a shallow frame and plywood backing ($1)
- Tube of acrylic black paint ($1.75)
- Replacement hands for clock kit ($3)
- Clear matte spray ($5)
The most expensive part of the project is probably purchasing the glossy photo-quality paper to print out the images, which D'Angelo already had around. He was thinking his next attempt would be a
Centipede style clock. Now that he's done it once he has a recommendation for other people attempting the same style clock, "I would suggest to make it easier to pick up one of those cheapy wallpaper rollers for the air bubbles so that you don't touch it with your hands." A nice gamer craft project with lots of image possibilities.

WOW. I'm gonna try this soon.

He should get a classic jumpman sprite from donkey kong at the bottom, instead of the SMB one.

I like the idea.
But is it just me, or does that look horribly crooked and poorly done? The line down the middle where the black doesn't quite match up...

Personally, not impressed at all.

It would of been much better if every level reached was associated to a specific time, lets say every ladder 15 minutes and every level an hour, and you had Mario climbing up.

Does this one really meet the height requirement? Nice fun work, but 'clock kit' projects are sort of so-so. I thought maybe you were gonna tell us that the barrels roll down on the minute, or that the alarm clock sounds like when DK stomps and makes the first girders crooked...
Not trying to be negative here, just sayin'.

It was a cool idea for a clock, but I think it could've been a bit better.

Nice touch, Will, but you have the time showing as 4700-wildly inaccurate. yk! yk! yk!

I like it but the large SMB Mario throws it off. Cool, otherwise!

I've made a bunch of custom clocks over the years... I never considered it an actual hobby, and now the fact that I've done it multiple times kinda seems freaky, but anyway...
In my case, I don't bother with quite this level of do-it-yourselfishness. Rather, if I saw a cheap clock at Walmart or somewhere that looked kind of cool (I often used those cheap neon rimmed clocks), I'd buy it, unscrew the back to take it apart, print out and glue a new face to it, then put it back together. Super-easy, and you can customize it with any image you want and have a really professional looking end product.
