If I include the cost of labor -- my time is fairly valuable to me -- this is no cheaper than just buying a drive.

Seems like that if I include the cost of my time, it would be cheaper to just buy the Microsoft unit. It is guaranteed to work and it comes with a handy utility to copy the data without my having to mess around with code and files created by some guy who can't even use his real name in public.
