Hi,

Reading & learning -Can you tell me the configuration of your $1,200 computer? While not a "college student" I am stall interested in best value.
Looking to purchase another computer - my Alienware desktop has performed very nicely for past 5 years and want to purchase / build another that will last another 5 and keep up with gaming requirements.

Thanks

I don't understand the notion that college students have no money. I mean, how can they have any less money than when they were in high school/middle school/elementary school/preschool/too young to be in school?

Why do people call video cards killer app[lication]s? You do realize that a killer app is in reference to a program, not a physical object.

I constantly shift between ATI and NVidia cards. I just get the best card in my price range at the time I'm putting a system together or upgrading. I haven't noticed any major difference in driver quality or compatibility.

I have to say that I tend to lean towards ATI on any given sunday but I have owned my share of Nvidia cards - I think I agree with #52 rational and non-frothing view. ;)

If this is ATI's new flagship card, why didn't they pit it against the 8800 GTX?

Doesn't take to much thought to figure that out. The price is good though. I just never liked ATI's drivers.

@ 57 orAngeMicro
i do recommend the new ATI HD 2900XTX video and sound physics card, that means that this monster card will be able to process video and sound physics at the same time without getting a second sound card in your rig.......

Wow Matt B. even though that comment has been said and debunked 20 times already you manage to ask it again as comment 55. However, i don't expect anything less considering you have NEVER said anything intelligent about console gaming either. every time you claim to have a unbeatable argument about that piece of shit ps3, someone slams you within 3 comments of your post.

For all the ATI fans out there, im sorry to say nVidia wins overall. I've read the post about the ATI radeon HD 2900 too many times, ive researched everything about it and compared it to the 8800 GTS and GTX. The Ati HD 2900 does beat the 8800 in 16x AF along with the 16x AA, but thats only 2 games.

The 8800 GTS and GTX have better performance. How? Well the 2900 uses about 100 more watts of power, drains power like a bitch, and with all the cases of the ATI 2900 over-heating and literally melting...should i go on? If you really want a comparison of the nVidia 8800's and the ATI 2900 go to www.hardocp.com. Please then you will understand why ATI needs to improve.

Pleased to see ATI bact on top, have had 3 different cards in the past and was going to buy first alternative 8800gts. Save to say I'll be buying ATI again.

U who have had problems with drivers, I've had no such problems?

I've always been a bigger fan of nvidia than ati. Nvidia cards have always seemed a bit more stable to me. That being said, this monster that ATI made, the HD2900XT is a far superior card than the 8800GTX. Sure, the 8800GTX will outperform it right now on DX9 games, but come when there are more DX10 titles out, you'll see the HD2900XT shine more. Plus anyone who's ever used an ati card knows that their first few driver releases tend to suck. Give them time to release a better driver and I'm sure you'll see what this thing can really do. Sometimes having the fastest card doesn't quite make it the best card. The 8800 series is an incredible card series, it'll get you high FPS on max resolutions with all the flash put on. That doesn't make it the best card to use. Just look at what the HD2900xt has on it. It's built to a totally different standard than what most gamers are used to. Right now...in a DX9 platform it'll get beaten out by nvidia's flagship, easily. But it is a sleeping dragon and you'll see with the release of some dx10 games that this dragon has a big bite. Of course, nvidia probably already has another card ready to be released soon that will compete with the HD2900 series, if they don't...well then they will deserve the pimp slap that ati will give them.
