About time. PS3 units get hotter than a George Foreman Grill.

@JodyAnthony
I know people who've had their expensive PS3 units go up... maybe not in flames, but the system certainly burned out.

@ 1.
Same here. As long as you do what the PS3 manual (white booklet)says, you'll be ok. "Do not block any vents. To maintain good ventilation, follow the guidelines below: Place the system at least 10 cm (4 in) away from a wall surface, Do not place on a carpet or rug with long fibers, Do not place in a narrow or craped space, Do not cover with cloth, Do not allow dust to build up on the vents."

My PS3 is just fine. Sony even said that the fans inside the PS3 will be ok. You can run Folding at Home constantly with no side affects. To me, these cooling units are unnecessary. Unless someone comes out with water cooling for PS3. ;-) if the PS3 even needs that, somethings wrong..

A peripheral to make it larger and more expensive than it already is/ I'm all for it, lets see how high they can make this tower with more useless peripherals.

btw, It should be 'more harm thaN good'.

If there is one thing I envy the PS3's hardware for it is the cooling system. Personally I take great care of my 360, so I will probably not have to worry about over heating, but I hate it when idiots by the system and leave their sweaters on it or put the power brick right next to the air-in fan. So I ask: Why in gods name would anyone need this thing?

Does it even matter if it overheats or not? The mere fact that you can reduce the temps is good enough to prolong the life of your PS3 (even if you take all precautionary measures).

Of course, I'd rather fab myself a water cooling kit before buying this.

The PS3 doesn't seem to have an overheating problem. But, perhaps keeping the interior temperature of the unit cooler will add to the life of the unit. I mean, they haven't had many failures yet, but the oldest PS3 is still only half a year old. My first 360 failed at month 11. Luckily I was within my 1 year Gamestop warranty that I paid $40 for and got a brand spankin new system.

as a 360 owner i envy the cooling engineering that went into the PS3. in the long run however heat will always kill. so if you can prolong the life of the console, why not invest in this ? its still to early to say that the PS3 has no overheating problems...

Hey guys, when you do posts on pointless gaming junk, you should use sarcasm to cloak the posts' uselessness to the world.

Just an idea though.

My PS3 overheated and no longer turns on. In fact it blows out very hot air. When I first got it I placed in my AV stand by itself on the side but it got very hot there. so I than placed it on top of the AV stand set verticly with nothing against the top vent and about 2 feet away from the wall. It fried 3 weeks later. However doesn't matter too much I am getting an exchange from Sony so all is forgiven sort of. paying 600 dollars for a game machine that fires out in 3 months makes me wish that I had bought one of those stupid PRP plans.

If you have any PS3 overheating problems then you're doing something really out of line, or the internal fans are broken or something.

I've had my PS3 on pretty much 24/7 crunching F@H since it came out, and no overheating. And I keep my apartment 80F+.

this is a waste of $30, as are product replacement plans. If the thing is going to conk out, it will do it within the first 30 days of use. do yourself a favor and RTFM for spatial requirements to prevent OVERheating (yes, the thing is going to heat up anyways, but you don't want it TOO hot). my PS3 and my 360 have their own shelf space with AT LEAST the minimum recommended space, not only for protection but longer life. both are initial launch versions, with no problems (ie- red rings of death). also, plug it in and turn it on for the as much as possible during the first 30-90 days, eject and reload discs constantly, etc (don't be abusive in this process, though)...same thing as buying a new computer--no, you don't have to leave your tv and stereo on the entire time (don't want to burn out your bulb/phosphors), but keep it running and ventilated properly.

Like I said earlier, if it breaks down it will do it in the first 30-90 days...if you are doing firmware or system updates, try to wait a week to make sure other people aren't having problems and MS or Sony iron out the problem so your system or game don't unexpectedly brick on you (referring to Oblivion patch problem for PC, maybe 360).

most problems that aren't manufacturer defects tend to be uninformed people (people who did not RTFM!!!!) or abusive people...which one are you?

Uhmm..Hello?

I have had almost every system you can think of I work with electronics I do set up stuff regularly . I know about airflow and heat(anyone who has every built a PC should know that). The PS3 puts out a lot of heat even if you allow for airflow you can feel the heat come out over a foot a way. I am getting another one from Sony no problem they are ding na exchange. but even when it sat horizontal the rigth side(the side with the vent had no obstruction for 14 inches and the back had an addition 10 inches. and the shelf is open in the back. Airflow was not the issue but the fact the PS3 puts out a lot of heat.

The PS3 is quiet because it uses a huge, honking blower instead of tiny fans. Anyways, the attachment is on the wrong end of things.. all its doing is moving the exhaust air away quicker.. which does absolutely nothing.

I don't think it's that stupid. I've had my PS3 get really hot only after an hour or two of gaming. I was playing FF VII on it a couple months ago and it started making this really weird sound. I pulled it out and it was unbelievably hot, so I put it out in the open for like 20 minutes with a fan on it and it stopped. Why didn't I just stop playing you say? FF VII stops for no one; that’s why.

Heat is allways allways a bad thing for electronics. The kind of heat my PS3 and my 360 put out is alarming. Anything you can do to reduce that should prolong the life of your system. I build systems and you don't actually cool the components as move the heat they are generating. This is only $30 bucks to protect a $600.00 investment.

Wow Sorny way to link that BS article from Kotaku.

The PS3 does get very hot. In fact it gets hottest right where this attachment goes. Right below the BluRay disc drive on the other side of the mainboard is the large heatsink connected to the heatpipes that cool the Cell and RSX. The amazing thing is that the mainboard must have a very good thermal insulation layer because the BluRay drive does not get hot at all.

My only worry about this type of unit is having it cause the internal fan to spin at a higher RPM due to the increased airflow burning it out. If that fan goes there goes your PS3.

Besides the PS3 will turn itself off before it destroys itself from heat. Anyone that has a PS3 die from overheating is doing something very wrong or got a very rare bad unit. The PS3 is built as good or better than most laptops. Since the age of the PS1 and original PS2 compact computer system manufacturing has greatly improved. More money is spent on fabrication for laptops than desktop machines. The PS3 is built like a high end laptop and fully capable of handling the thermal stress.

My friends has not over heated but it sure is louder than the 360 when your playing a movie! DANG! why dont people complain about that? Loud as you know what when it is actually being used! Sure its overall quiter than the 360 when booting up. But you better turn the sound up loud!

sorry, wasn't addressing my post at you (otherwise I would've preceded my post with "@14"). responding to the Pelican product announcement. yours was obviously a manufactured defect...am glad you are able to get a replacement. $600 makes for an expensive doorstop...

for the other people out there, a regular room fan or putting the unit by your air conditioning vents will help keep it cool, and save you the $30....

Useless. For a fan to be effective, it must be mounted directly on the heatsink. All this thing does is create turbulance which can actually fight with the main blower in the PS3.

If a system overheats, the heatsink is too small. More fans will generally not solve the problem, and even then, the fans MUST be located on the heatsink itself to ensure that the airflow passes over the entire surface of the heatsink fins.

I havent seen it first hand, but a friend was telling me that when he had his PS3 stuffed into a small cubby with bad ventilation, after playing for maybe an hour, the PS3 fans kicked into overdrive. It scared the shit out of him, and he did the obvious thing: took it out of the cubby. The fan speed returned to normal shortly after that.

you people are such idiots, I work at circuit city and we had to ADD fans to keep it from shutting off due to overheating, yes true keep it free of space around it and its fine, but the majority of ppl WILL stuff it into a stereo cabinet, so I laugh a thousand times at all of you XD.

the fans dont work they are too far away from the system they need to be inside it. also i have never seen a ps3 that has been in a clear area. they only do when they are stuffed somewhere small.

I purchase Nyko Cooler for my son in December, it was a pre-order. After being on delayed for purchase for the last 5 months, I finally received it 4 weeks ago. He used it for 1 day and on the second day is Playstion stopped reading his disc. I sent the playstion back to Sony. I am returning it to Gamestop today. I refuse to allow him use it again. I will take the chance of the system overheating.

Have anyone else used this product with this problem?
