Well, my primary concern with the game has now been destroyed. Bring it on. Unless, of course, I have to scribble magic spells ala Deep Labyrinth.

aaaand so all hopes of the DQ series finally evolving are tossed out the window.
God. Do the Japanese universally, and massively all together absolutely fear change? I mean, yeah, okay, we do too, a lil', I suppose, buy MY god, the DQ series has barely changed -AT ALL- since the early god damned games... and the Japanese apparently LOVE this, as they keep buying it in droves.

If Grand Theft Auto was a Japanese franchise, they'd all still be top-down 2D games.

The game hasn't changed because it doesn't need to. Unlike other RPGs that rely on the "pretty-pretty" factor (a la Final Fantasy), DQ games have a good STORYLINE.

Just... fucking... die...

If you want the "new RPG" or, "doom with text," Oblivion is over there. Why should everyone elses established series have to change for your kind of fucktard?

To #9

DQ8 was different from the other DQ games. Wasn't 8 the first game were you could actually to see your character attacking the enemy, VS were you only saw the enemy on the screen and then a flash. Which meant your character attacked the enemy.

I know its not a big change, but its still a change.
If i'm wrong, someone correct me.

DQ VIII was also the first to have voice acting. Not only that, but the voice acting was done in English, for the English audience (it shipped without voice acting in Japan).

And DQ8 was the first 3D Dragon Quest title as well. Point being? It stayed relativelt true to the formula and what the fans wanted while merely expanding. Otis bashe was expecting massive change to the established formula. And I'll give you one series that has been utterly ravaged by adapting it's core to appeal to a wider audience....

Shining In The Darkness.

Nowadays, it doesn't know what the fuck it wants to be. All I can tell you for certain is everyone who was eagerly awaiting Shining Force IV has acknowledged Sega hated them and moved onto Nippon Ichi games.

Sometimes you just don't need all that much evolution. Exploring new areas in gameplay can be nice and all, but it can be just as effective to stick with a reliable experience. I've been hankering for a decent, old-school turn-based RPG, and this sounds like it might just fit the bill. The lack of random encounters invites comparison to Chrono Trigger, which is *never* a bad thing. Especially since I @#$%ing HATE random encounters.

FUCK YEAH!

Best gaming news in a long time. Thank god it's not on the MMO-like bandwagon, thank you god, thank you god. Man I hate how all the RPG's are trying to reinvent the way they are played all the time so dramatically that it becomes more of an adventure game than an RPG. I was really hoping for DQ9 to be turn based despite the deceiving screenshots. If it wasn't going to be turn based, the only thing I had hope for was DQ:Swords despite it's gimmicky nature.
