Hasbro to provide trading cards for PS3's Eye of Judgment
Hasbro has announced a collaboration with Sony Computer Entertainment that will see the toy maker produce trading cards for the PlayStation 3's upcoming camera-based card battler, Eye of Judgment. No stranger to tabletop games, thanks to its Wizards of the Coast subsidiary and Magic: The Gathering series, Hasbro has agreed to create, manufacture and distribute all the cards used in the PS3 game.
Eye of Judgment promises to take tabletop gaming in an elaborate (and surely more expensive) direction by adding the PlayStation Eye camera and a video game console to the normal process of lining up cards and having paper monsters clobber each other with increasingly obscure statistics. Instead of using your boring, standard definition imagination to envision the excitement, the PS3 will scan the cards and generate 3D models of the creatures in play.
Of course, it doesn't sound as exciting when you put it like that, so be thankful for Sony's Phil Harrison having stored up a whole deck of hyperbole trap cards. "The Eye of Judgment represents a totally new genre in gaming," says the corporate executive. "Combining Hasbro's clear market leadership in trading card games with the immense power of PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Eye, is a powerful formula that will result in a revolutionary video game experience that will amaze and engage gamers around the world."

Too bad Sony doesn't have Pokemon under its belt...
This sounds like it would be a sure-fire hit with that franchise
a dirty bastard @ Apr 26th 2007 12:53PM
forget pokemon
yugioh would be a better game for the camera
its not as big as pokemon but its still popular
TheGuy @ Apr 26th 2007 12:55PM
Agreed, Yugioh would have made a much better card game for the PSEye.
Grey Acumen @ Apr 26th 2007 12:58PM
Yu Gi OOOHHHHHHHH!
Seriously, will they also sell the 7 ancient relics that will make you grant you superior strategy and the ability to draw the card you want without fail, as well as inflicting you with split personalities?
Other than that, it's actually a pretty cool idea, but I see this as being a bit of a pain in the ass to use with the camera. It'd probably work better with that RFID ink they used for cow branding, and a mat to put the cards on. Still, it does at least make sure you can see if your opponent tries to cheat the deck on you. Then again, it might just make it easier "oops, my camera got covered for half a second, hey, what a coincidence, I drew the exact card I need to turn the battle in my favor..."
There are lots of ways this could go, and I don't like trading card games at ALL so I'm not gong to worry about it anyway.
Todd @ Apr 26th 2007 12:59PM
I'm not amazed or engaged.
I can't be the only person who finds this setup and style of gameplay a little clunky.
scott @ Apr 26th 2007 1:00PM
Official camera price - 99.99!
jaysins @ Apr 26th 2007 1:02PM
I want one... damn I'm such a nerd. Magic with your friends any time or with random people sounds really cool. Sony still has monster ranchers I believe.
a dirty bastard @ Apr 26th 2007 1:03PM
@6 wheres the link with the price
mafafu @ Apr 26th 2007 1:08PM
This closely resembles crap on a cracker, in both content and scent.
Jay @ Apr 26th 2007 1:09PM
This just seems like a waste ... either have a card game -- or a video game with a card based system. There is no chance I'm going to set up a gameboard, connect the camera, position the camera, and then play the game on the TV. I'd rather just play on a table-top.
My prediction -- it'll die quick.
Pete @ Apr 26th 2007 1:17PM
This is going to be the best thing since UNO on Xbox Live.
Jb @ Apr 26th 2007 1:22PM
Yea thats the key make that boring expensive system and MORE expensive and BORING.
Good direction there sony.
smudley @ Apr 26th 2007 1:36PM
should we file this under tapped or untapped?
heavyness @ Apr 26th 2007 1:37PM
so either i play this on the floor in front of my tv... or i run a usb cable over to a coffee table, duct tape the camera on it [or by the extra camera arm add-on], and play.
kinda inconvenient. cool idea, but i don't see it lasting.
Fernando Rocker @ Apr 26th 2007 1:46PM
So the Wiimote is a gimmick...

x876543 @ Apr 26th 2007 2:20PM
Who are they marketing this to? 12 year olds? What demographic is are they targeting? This is just stupid.
Sinnix @ Apr 26th 2007 2:22PM
That's kinda cool. I don't normally applaud Sony, but I have to give them credit. That's a lot more innovative than anything MS has done with their camera.
samfish @ Apr 26th 2007 2:41PM
"Combining Hasbro's clear market leadership in trading card games with the immense power of PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Eye, is a powerful formula that will result in a revolutionary video game experience that will amaze and engage gamers around the world.""
Oh for Christ's sake- there's nothing revolutionary about card reader games, Sony. They've been around since the damn black and white Game Boy.
I know it's just a bunch of corporate marketing hyperbole, but still...
Fatass of Kickassness @ Apr 26th 2007 2:47PM
@19
Yes, they were around on the Gameboy, and the monsters on the card would show up on the game as pixelated blobs that look worse than the illustration on the card itself. Now don't you think highly-detailed 3D renderings of the monsters sounds better?
Shagittarius @ Apr 26th 2007 3:02PM
You guys that are putting this down do know what your talking about don't you? In this game when your holding a card that has say a dragon on it, the camera recognizes it and then the dragon sticks its head off the card and breathes fire around while your placing it on the map. It will superimpose the graphics over the video of you playing with the cards. If they work in game mechanics to this it could be really fun.
It is a gimmik but its more of a gimmik than you guys are giving it credit for.
Boss Tempo @ Apr 26th 2007 3:05PM
This looks a little wonky to me but it is cool that Sony is trying something a little different than simply making Totem Ball II - I'll at least give them that much. I still don't see the benefit of having to buy real cards over just purchasing virtual ones. Personally I think I'd rather have them stored on my hard drive than having to get down on the floor and set up real ones every time I wanted to play.
OhJustSomeRandomGuy @ Apr 26th 2007 3:14PM
Fernando Rocker: Yeah, the Wii is a gimmick. Fortunately for the PS3 this gimmick isn't the entire foundation for the system.
This actually looks pretty cool. I don't know that I'd go in on the entire setup, because I can't see using the camera for anything else, but if it was cheap, somewhere around the price of the 360 cam, I'd probably buy it with a game as a bundle.
The problem with games like Magic and the like is that if you don't get your friends into them, the game died. Then if you DID get your friends into them, you basically learned the weaknesses of their deck, and you meta-gamed. This should bring a lot of life back into CCGs, as it offers solutions to those problems.
Sure it's not "Innovative", but guess what, neither is the Wiimote!
What it does do is fill a nice little niche in the market...as soon as the prices on the systems drop.
Kelvin @ Apr 26th 2007 3:35PM
Great idea, if they implemented online on these games as well, would be really good.
Scumdog @ Apr 26th 2007 3:44PM
Stupid. What a huge waste of time when you can just play a table-top card game. You need 3D? Get Heroclix. Jesus, doesn't anyone have an imagination anymore?
This thing will die faster than the e-reader.
OhJustSomeRandomGuy @ Apr 26th 2007 3:55PM
Scumdog: The Heroclix system suffers from the same problem as Warhammer. Trying to figure out line of sight and get everything set up and then cleaned up is a giant pain in the ass.
It's mitigated somewhat with the Clix system, but figuring out range and all that is still a highly annoying process.
On top of that, this system, if online is implemented is design to solve the problem of you not having another person to play with when you're in the mood to play. If I wanted to set up a good game of Spycraft right now, I have my deck ready to go...where am I going to find someone to play against?
This isn't about laziness, it's about convenience.
Aex @ Apr 26th 2007 3:59PM
I think this game looks sorta interesting. I'm sorta excited about it. If this is the only game leads to others of the kind. Lots of people were kidding around about the Yu Gi Oh thing, but imagine the amounts of fun to be had when you scream at your opponent sitting next to you "FUCKING DARK MAGICIAN BITCH!" Man, I love me some Yu Gi Oh...
Shagittarius @ Apr 26th 2007 4:00PM
This game sucks beacuse it sounds cool but I'm too cheap to buy a PS3.
OhJustSomeRandomGuy @ Apr 26th 2007 4:01PM
Shagittarius: THAT right there is the real problem with this thing.
DarkTetsuya @ Apr 26th 2007 4:09PM
Y'know with tech like that, an MTG game might actually work, speaking of which.

Actually, it is bundled with the game. So $60 for the game and the camera. Nice try though. Try being informed next time.

When this comes out, I want to see you guys take pictures holding it. I don't believe any of you are actually going to pay for this. And comment 16 was awesome.
