Happy 10th un-birthday Duke Nukem Forever!
Hold on, Wii! Your name isn't the only thing celebrating a birthday today! Well, it's not so much a "birth" day in this other case, seeing as how we're still waiting for the baby to drop ...
So, happy 10th un-birthday Duke Nukem Forever! CVG reminds us that ten years ago, on this very day, you were conceived and hurriedly scribbled into tiny notebooks (computers weren't even invented yet!) and from there typed up into magazines (remember them?) the world over. Sure, a lot of things have happened in the last ten years (no, seriously, A LOT) -- including some awards, you assiduous devil -- but we still remember where we were when you were announced to the world. Find out where after the break:
Ludwig Kietzmann: Egads, I was in 7th grade back then! I still am, but at this rate, I'm pretty sure I'll be out before Duke Nukem Forever.
Justin McElroy: I was enjoying a malt at The Maxx, trying to convince Screech that he deserved to be valedictorian, despite how badly Jesse wanted the honor. Also: The Macarena.
Ross Miller: I was 11 and in 5th grade. I was probably running around on the playground and learning how to swear. Maybe I was playing Commander Keen.
Tony Carnevale: Ten years ago, I was attending college in a desert in Arizona, for reasons I still haven't figured out. I played a lot of Moria and Angband in those days. I'm actually very similar to Duke Nukem Forever, because everybody keeps expecting that someday, both of us will "come out."
Andrew Yoon: I was in 6th grade and I was most certainly watching Power Rangers -- as my friends were making fun of me for still watching Power Rangers.
Kevin Kelly: "I was graduating college and hitting the road from Austin, Texas to Los Angeles, California. Whee-ha!"
Alexander Sliwinski: I would have said playing Starcraft, but that wouldn't be out for another year.
Zack Stern: "I was preparing to spend the summer canoeing in the Arctic, where my group of paddlers would play card games instead of consoles."
James Ransom-Wiley: Getting stoned on my friend's roof, while listening to embarrassingly cliched songs about getting stoned.
Christopher Grant: I was undoubtedly playing Duke Nukem 3D over a 33.6 kbps modem on my 90Mhz Pentium all while wearing Reebok pumps, drinking a Crystal Pepsi, and fiddling with a snap bracelet.

I'd say "Playing Quake 2" but that wasn't out yet either. Action Quake FTW!
What a joke.
hvnlysoldr @ Apr 27th 2007 2:11PM
Power Rangers were awesome. I see the formula now and realize the formula especially works if you can manage to do it on a daily basis. I miss all those old shows where they could pump out all those episodes and many of them giving me enjoyment. Search for 90's intro overload on youtube.

I can't remember what I had for breakfast. Nuff said.
HaloBreaker @ Apr 27th 2007 2:13PM
I was 13 years old. But just think of all the Duke 3d material that came out since 97:
# Duke 3D Mania
# Duke Assault
# Duke Caribbean: Life's A Beach
# Duke it out in D.C.
# Duke Nukem 3D
# Duke Nukem 3D (Atomic Edition)
# Duke Nukem 64
# Duke The Apocalypse 2
# Duke Xtreme
# Duke!ZONE II
# Duke: Nuclear Winter
oops my bad, ALL of those came out in 97.
dvnt @ Apr 27th 2007 2:30PM
I was 15 and was probably out with my buddies destroying corporate property(aka shopping carts). Damn, has it really been 10 years? I feel old. Thanks DNF!
Also, I think Christopher Grant went a little more than 10 years back with what he was doing. Crystal Pepsi/Snap bracelets were like 90-92.
Fatass of Kickassness @ Apr 27th 2007 2:33PM
I was 19, probably still in a hospital bed because of a huge amount of shock suffered when I had found out I had won the lottery.
balloon payments ftw.
Crono @ Apr 27th 2007 2:35PM
Dude, snap bracelets were cool!
I was in 9th grade, I think (14 is 9th, right?). Freshman in highschool, even though our highschool was a 3 year school. Probably playing Warcraft II, wishing Starcraft was out.
Oh yeah, and I was totally convinced that Duke 3D was a way better game than Quake 1.
Oh yeah, and I was discovering Anime. No, that came a year or so later.
Almack64 @ Apr 27th 2007 2:37PM
97 eh, I was making that ackward transition between middle to highschool. At first I thought I would have been totally engrossed playing Goldeneye but that won't have happen for a few more months. So I was probably playing Shawdows of the Empire.
Daxter1985 @ Apr 27th 2007 2:38PM
10 years ago I just about turned 12 *april 18th* and I was playing pokemon Yellow that I got for my birthday on this exact day 10 years ago
ck @ Apr 27th 2007 2:38PM
That was about the same time POG died out...
Seriously, that link to what's happened in the past 10 years blew my mind. I mean, these past 10 years have been one of the most eventful and progressive ten years in human history (okay, maybe not).
I mean Britney Spears' and Colin Farrell's career have sprung up to popularity and have subsequently died in these 10 years. To me that speaks volumes. Oh and all that technology and other stuff too I guess.
Randy @ Apr 27th 2007 2:39PM
Crystal Pepsi
1992 to 1993

Snap bracelets are still around so I can't argue much with that.
Craig @ Apr 27th 2007 2:40PM
I was 18, writing a school assignment 'What will you be doing in 10 years?'. Funny enough I said I would be writing about how DNF still wouldn't be out on a 'blog'. My teacher failed me, saying she didn't know what a blog was, to be fair, either did I.
Randy @ Apr 27th 2007 2:41PM
Then again, Christopher Grant has always been a dirty dirty liar, even 10 years ago.

I was talking to school counsolers due to my sketchbook, talking to my principle over the "satanic" book I was reading during gym (It was The Sandman: Season Of The Mist), trying desperately to get in this one girls panties, and eagerly awaiting all these RPGs Nintendo was promising for N64 when I chose their console over the Playstation.
Todd @ Apr 27th 2007 2:51PM
I got the Duke a present. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, the present cannot be released at this time.
Shawn D @ Apr 27th 2007 2:54PM
Freshman in college, although Quake took up most of my time back then. Wow, I feel old.
Duke @ Apr 27th 2007 3:02PM
This is incorrect.
The game was announced on the 28th, not the 27th.

Around this time in '97, I was spending every night at my friends' house because he was lucky enough to get one of those awesome Nintendo 64s for Christmas (my dad finally bought one a year later). We spent every waking moment playing Mario Kart 64.
Tom @ Apr 27th 2007 3:41PM
I was 17 and learning to drive. In my first year in college and (unsuccessfully) trying to pull college girls!
Still had my Amiga back then - I was late to the console scene.
konajinx @ Apr 27th 2007 3:56PM
Ten years ago I was 24 and didn't care about Duke Nukem. Much like I don't care now. Yay!
John Doe @ Apr 27th 2007 4:16PM
I was 5, and probably picking my nose.
Crono @ Apr 27th 2007 4:27PM
Shoot, I'm 24 and STILL picking my nose.
Believe it or not, everybody picks their nose. Your mom just tells you not to so you can learn to do it without getting caught.
Gorf @ Apr 27th 2007 4:38PM
I never get tired of telling the story. When DNF was announced, my younger brother was a high school stoner. He's now a surgeon. Yes, you can actually create a Doctor in less time than it's taken 3DR to release this game.
Mr Khan @ Apr 27th 2007 4:52PM
10 years ago, i was 7, extremely out-doorsy, i watched Nickelodeon and read comic books when i wasn't outside, and i thought video games were for fat losers who lived in their basements
no joke. 10 years has done a LOT to me, aside from the natural changes of puberty
Grindstone @ Apr 27th 2007 5:18PM
I was 21 and finally getting into the college scene after too much deliberation. 3 collegial degrees later, I'm thinking about going back to school.
I was a passive gamer in 1997, not too much interested me aside from Golden Eye. My console gaming wouldn't pick up again until Halo on the Xbox. Oh, and I got married and had a kid in those last 10 years. Crazy.
stick_man @ Apr 27th 2007 6:14PM
Ehhh Duke Nukem sucks now just as bad as it did back then. It is, and will remain, a sad knock off of commander keen.
Alex @ Apr 27th 2007 7:00PM
10 years from now, I was still a gamer (albiet young and casual), and my dad offered to buy a new game for my N64 for good grades I think, I remember my older brother getting mad at me for picking Diddy Kong Racing over Turok 64 which he eventually got himself later that year. Both games owned
Anyone here born after Forever's unbirth year?
Anonymous (He who does not forgive) @ Apr 27th 2007 11:10PM
I was FIVE.
FIVE.
What the fuck, 3DR...
Chris @ Apr 28th 2007 1:55AM
They left the Wii of the list of consoles that came out.
Purple Haze @ Apr 28th 2007 2:19AM
I was 4.
Mojo @ Apr 28th 2007 3:38AM
Let's see. I would've been 16. I can only assume that I was spending my time banging lots of hot chicks.
Tom @ Apr 28th 2007 5:57AM
Never mind creating a surgeon in that time. Since DNF was announced NASA have announced, researched, launched and completed a mission to Mars.
boo_radley @ Apr 28th 2007 12:10PM
this really is their M.O though, how long did Prey take to come out? I remember an article in PC Gamer about that game and how it would revolutionize games cause it had this new true 3D engine and how your character was kidnapped to be some kind of interstellar gladiator.
