Call of Duty 4 trailer
89
Sure, you could wait until the NFL draft on ESPN today to see the "exclusive worldwide reveal" of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare ... or you can just click the movie above. CoD4 was pseudo-announced earlier this week when advertisements for the game showed up on our own little piece of the intertubes. Now game announcements can come in many forms, either from the actual company, ESRB, Gamefly or even the advertisements on our own website.
It definitely looks like Call of Duty is going in a different direction, for better or worse will certainly be determined by sales. It looks like we've got some nasty "Eastern Europeans" and jihadists. Fighting Nazis is pretty cool across the board, but delving into the modern political climate may hit just a little close to home. Check out the trailer above to see if it reminds you of a stylized version of the six o'clock news.

It seems interesting, although leaving WWII (as overdone as the subgenre has been) is going to have this game competing with a much broader variety of competition.
I think that CoD has done some amazing work with WWII (although 3 seemed a bit rushed), and I really hope the sence of intensity that the series is known for will carry over past the Nazis and to these "Eastern Europeans."
Is this the largest profile game revolving around jihadists (not including generic, diverse terrorists in something like Counter Strike)?

CoD4 is apparently made primarily for the ps3 and 360. PC version hasn't been confirmed.

Gah! What a horrible setting. It's ether going to be a right-wing propaganda wankfest, or a limp-wristed PC pile of crap! Yay! Surely there are more wars then just WWII to base games on. There's even a few where the Americans didn't make a complete arse of themselves, so why pick this other to generate contrvesy?

I'm with Poisoned Al on this one. When I heard CoD4 was going to break from the WWII setting I breathed a sigh of relief. Maybe now I can enjoy the series, right? I mean, WWII shooters are just plain overdone. We get 3 or 4 new ones a year.
However, I also hoped that we wouldn't see what, sadly, we see above. They decided to bank on the "war on terror", and it's either going to be military/right-wing propaganda or the opposite and be a left-wing anti-war message. While I'd prefer the latter to the former, as the former is far more rage-inducing for me, either way it's just taking advantage of the current military and political climate to sell games, and I for one won't be supporting such an action.
I suppose of CoD4 really does turn out to be like that or not remains to be seen, but if this trailer is any indication.....

WOW! If they can take the intensity from their previous games and put it in a modern one, this could be a historic game ;) ! Can't wait!

I've gotta say, that trailer has me excited about Call of Duty again. I loved CoD 1 and 2, which were made by Infinity Ward, but I really didn't think much of CoD 3, which was made by Treyarch. It's good to see Infinity Ward's edition of Call of Duty once again, and hopefully it'll be a good supplement to the CoD franchise.

Anyone else here see the dinosaur? Then the nuke at the end. The game must be made by Republicans who think Iraq had nukes and that dinosaurs are still alive.

This looks great, now imo they could have called it something else then CoD. Well what i saw from the trailer it looks alot like BF2, but that works with better of everything. BF2 was great until EA stuck their ass in it with the stupid patches that ruined it.
Hope the game lives up to the trailer, and for online play hopefully theres a detailed stats system like BF2.

I am completely shocked by the amount of people that are excited by this game. Someone mentioned that the CoD series has always told amazing stories ... huh? This series is known for fragmented stories that never make you care one bit for the characters. Plus the game engine looks like it has been slightly modified from the CoD 3 engine, which I for one was not impressed with. The soldiers all looked the same, they all moved the same and they were all completely predictable. Definitely passing on this one.

Everyone who hates the game for it's setting is retarded.(see the period? say it out loud)
Anyway, I wouldn't really have cared what game it was, it's another shooter from infinity ward. Yeah, I'll probably buy it.

just because this trailer seems to indicate it's about "the war on terror" doesn't mean it has to have a message per se or be preachy...black was a first person shooting game that featured a fight against eastern european terrorists and that had nothing to do with the war on terror and it certainly didn't try to get across any political views.
would you rather the game be set during the revolutionary war? the war of 1812 perhaps? maybe vietnam tickles your fancy.

I would have preferred another historical conflict as opposed to modern warfare. People say World War II games is a crowded genre, but just as crowded is the genre where you mow down faceless Middle Easterners and "a rogue Eastern European splinter group." Five bucks says the main badguy is ex-KGB.
What about World War I? There's been no games about that aside from aerial combat games. Korea? Most people seem to have forgotten we had a war in Korea.
I also am concerned if they overburden the game with a bunch of jingoistic bullshit. I'm not playing a game if its going to sit there and try and tell me that the "war on terror" is anything other than a political tool crafted by the Bush administration to keep the American people docile and to justify the curbing of personal liberties.

That is in game footage of actual gameplay, the only difference is you're not seeing your gun in front of the camera.

Seriously guys it's just a setting. Are you really intimidated by the fact that the war takes place in modern times? Maybe if the older generation saw COD 1-3 they would've thought that WW2 was too close to home.
And seriously, Joystiq. What I like about this site is you stand up for games that are willing to be a bit more controversial. So you feel like a war game that accurately represents modern weapons and environments is too close to home, but a Columbine simulation is perfectly ok? http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/31/columbine-game-blocked-from-receiving-slamdance-special-jury-pri/
I am not saying that I am against Super Columbine Massacre RPG. It just seems a little hypocritical that their are so many articles on this site that tries to go against Jack Thompson and say how video games don't influence reality. http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/18/what-i-know-about-violent-games/
So now that we have a game that may actually have the cojones to tackle such a subject and you're gonna say it's inappropriate based off a minute and a half trailer.
Oh, and I wouldn't pair Eastern Europeans with jihadists. If you're suggesting that this game tackles real life conflicts then you're refering to the Middle East or Western Asia. Then again it does show a flag which looks Russian.
I think the point is that we still don't know what the game is so Joystiq writers and commenters shouldn't make any assumptions yet. And if it does mimic a modern political situation then we should support in order to better encourage video game free speech.

@16 You are right CoD 4 seems to be taking cues from the current political and social climate to sell video games. However thats no different from any other "realistic" based shooter (fear, prey ect doesn't count). These other games ie rainbow 6, splinter cell, cod, medal of honor, black use current social and political ideas to sell video games. If you won't purchase a game because it based on current events you might as well put your controller down.

Looks great. I like the setting. Its modern day stuff. Its about time they have something dealing with all the jihadist bastards. Unfortunately the threat the pose to us and the world is all to real. But sadly, some people still dont get it. People like Poisoned Al. He is one of those morons who doesnt get it. He is probably one of the idiots who think 9/11 was a conspiracy.

Typical liberal. Using your emotional opinions without coming up with any ideas to make anything better (i.e. war, the actual game). And it puts you into a "rage"? I can't stand this war either, but I go on with the life I have some control over. The "War on Terror" was working great until Iraq. I still support the "War", but I don't lump it in with the Iraq war. Even Democrats share the same thinking as I do. So, do you support the "War", as in Afghanistan and other countries NOT named Iraq? Or do you just abstain from any war altogether? If you do, I bet you will at the same time believe that the U.S. should not be isolationists. For me, one or the other. I choose the later.
Regardless, I think you're full of talk and I bet you will buy this game when everybody else will be playing it except for you.

You're perfectly welcome to your opinions about my statement. I supported the "War" until Iraq as well, so at least we agree on that point. However calling the current state of the war on terror anything more than an attempt to make oil money, bank from military contracts, and lock down our civil liberties is ludicrous. There's no point to our boys dying over there, and I'm sure you'd agree with that as well. I didn't intend my post to be a manifesto, nor was it meant to be a suggestion box for making things better. That was my gut (negative) reaction to the trailer, and I'm sticking to it. I also left open the possibility that I could be wrong in my final sentence.
Anyway, this game will sell like hotcakes whether I like it or not, and it'll probably be a good game on it's own merit for those fans of the series.
For the record, I never liked the CoD series so I doubt I will buy CoD4 regardless of the content. I had simply hoped they wouldn't go this route, so it might garner some interest from me, but for the moment I stand disappointed.

Geez, can't anyone play a game anymore? Does every game have to make a statement? I usually play a game or watch movies to escape from reality (with few exceptions) now and then to take a break. I guess I better start thinking about the message Command and Conquer 3 is sending me -- I know GoW had me looking funny at steroid-pumped, superhuman armed personnel for a long time! But I got over it.
The game looks entertaining, and I bet... just bet, that a video game will have no influence on my personal views, beliefs, nor on my habits; most likely because I am an adult. Maybe if folks are so influenced by video game messages and morals, then avoid games with the "M" rating, this means the game is not for you in more than a few ways.
Otherwise, come relax with me and shoot up some bad guys -- these bullets and lasers don't shoot themselves!
