Gears of War screenplay details leaked online
We take the hard lumps for you at Joystiq. For example, we slogged through a purported summary of the 22-page leaked script treatment of the Gears of War movie over at Latino Review, spoilers be damned. What we found seemed like a competent, if slightly heavy-handed, take on the game that seems to have been crafted by someone who's actually picked up a controller.
We're not going to talk plot, but rest assured it seems like its on the right track, with all the characters, settings, etc. you'd expect to see. If we're concerned about anything, it's dialog. Admittedly, there's not much of it here, but the direct quotes are gems like "Could have done with that, like, before the wars ended" and "Congratulations, soldier." Maybe the guy just didn't copy and paste the good dialog, we don't know. Of course, if you crave something close to the spirit of the game, uninspired dialog is a more necessary component than a chainsaw bayonet (which is in there too, don't worry).
In fact, now that we've mentioned it, this may be just a bit too close to Gears of War. If the internet were not so very reputable, we might mention that there's a slight possibility this treatment review may be the product of a devoted fan and not Mr. Stuart Beattie. Of course, there's no way of knowing at the moment. We'll simply have to pop some corn, grab a soda, and wait for the movie to be released never.

Who would've thought that the generic epic sci fi bad ass space marine from the post apocalyptic future saving humanity from monsters story would make a good movie? Who I ask you, who?

Hopefully this game-to-movie transition will end up better than Doom.

Uwe Boll! Uwe Boll!! Uwe Boll!!! Making feature films from first person shooters is like making feature films from porn.
Think about it.
At least after that joke of a film tanks at the box office they will know to never do it again, and perhaps, in a perfect world, stop M$ from shitting out that Halo movie.
Alex @ Apr 30th 2007 1:05PM
I hope they don't try to make it too hollywood'esque or epic, because then it would turn out to look like the movie 300 which took itself way too seriously (the graphics were great, the dialogue, borderline racism, and presentation of the story, not so much)
They should go for the B-movie exploitation film. Grindhouse (Planet Terror) revived it, and that movie kicks ass.

This move does not need FPS, after all GoW is not a TRUE FPS game. What it needs is to MAKE SURE THE DONNIE DARKO SONG plays on a continuous loop for the ENTIRE duration of the film. Also, it must be credited as "The Donnie Darko Song" by Donnie Darko.

@ Alex
You're not a man if you didn't like 300. There. I said it.
@Jonathan Tran
I agree. That would make me go see it!

@6
Thanks. Also, 300 was not that great. It was pretty boring outside of the fights, and having studied Iranian and Persian history the story seems a little needlessly biased.
Also, come on, why should any movie have a character declare "FREEDOM ISNT FREE!!!"
Phranctoast @ Apr 30th 2007 1:29PM
Team America rocked.

@Jonathan Tran
The fights are all you need, my friend. That's why 300 was great. Plus it had breasts. Fighting + Breasts = a man's movie. All it needed was alot of alcohol and we'd be set.
Alright... I'll stop the male stereotype now.

spoiler! at the end some big monster is killed but then they realize there is an even bigger monster waiting to destroy humanity. roll credits.
horngreen @ Apr 30th 2007 5:29PM
This movie is going to stink. I'm not going out on a limb here either, we all know it I've just got enough SACK to say it! The game is great but it has NOTHING to do with the games script or story. It is simply a fun game with laughably funny dialouge. Not funny in a good way funny in a make fun of it way. BRING IT!
Zsavior @ Apr 30th 2007 6:10PM
Alex you rule the school, and seeing other comments on this board, I am glad there are still some Americans out there not easily brainwashed by violence and blood shed. Other than that I have no hope for 300.
Zsavior @ Apr 30th 2007 6:11PM
Sorry meant Gears Of war Movie
TuMaiKbron @ Apr 30th 2007 8:31PM
Yeah right...
The Halo movie "screenplay" was also leaked, and what have come out of that project?
Nothing...
p3arl @ Apr 30th 2007 8:58PM
read it, got all tingly like i did when i read the halo leaked script, then remembered the fate of the halo movie, imo, a halo movie would be better than a gears one, but gears has such an insane scale of bad ass monsters so hopefully they will prove its worth.
WHATEVER YOU DO CLIFFY DONT DO A DOOM!

There's a site documenting the film's development here: http://gearsofwar.moviechronicles.com
It has a nice summary/commentary of the supposed leaked script.
