New games this week: Spider-Man 3 edition

Though it's been years in the making, this Friday, the brand synergy that began with adopting the Spider-Man font for the PlayStation 3 will reach its inevitable -- and glorious -- conclusion: Spider-Man 3 comes out in theaters, and every video game system known to man (except PSP, they've got to wait), including ... the PlayStation 3. So, there it is above, replete with identical 3s, the Spider-Man 3 Collector's Edition for PS3. Oh, did we mention that the PS3 is the only console getting a "Collector's Edition" with the ability to play as the New Goblin with Sixaxis controls? Can't you feel the synergy?
The rest of the week's new games are after the break ...

I wonder if Spider-Man 3 will be at least as good as Spider-Man 2 was (the game, not the movie).
C. Grant @ Apr 30th 2007 11:39AM
Justin McElroy lurvs Spider-Man 2
Justin McElroy @ Apr 30th 2007 11:40AM
THE GAME.
JodyAnthony @ Apr 30th 2007 11:41AM
have the movie-games been any good? The last spiderman game I played was the PSOne game. That and Maximum Carnage were the best spiderman games, imo.
sheppy @ Apr 30th 2007 11:42AM
Am I the only one amused that, if you remove the rereleases on PS2s list and the Virtual Console drops on Wii, their release lists match perfectly?
Incidently, has any reviews gone up about the CE of Spiderman 3?
Moe @ Apr 30th 2007 11:43AM
If you're going to mention the Virtual console why not mention the Live arcade games or the PSN games: Calling all cars...
Zertoss @ Apr 30th 2007 11:46AM
Spider-Man wasn't a terrible game. Sneaking around inside buildings and lowering yourself from the ceilings behind the bad guys was pretty satisfying. The game got old fast though.
Spider-Man 2 was a good game. Free-swinging around the city never gets old. Other than that, though, there wasn't really any replay value.
C. Grant @ Apr 30th 2007 11:49AM
Oh snap! You're right, Moe. Forgot CAC was actually going to be released! We've never had a PSN title on the list because, well, frankly they only have a couple games out! We'll definitely add that one up though.
As for XBLA, they often don't announce what's coming out until Wednesday morning, so they're not included on the list. If they announce the releases in time, we'll be sure to add them as well.
Tom @ Apr 30th 2007 11:52AM
Spiderman 2 was great, but once you reach your maximum abilities the web slinging loses some of its awesomeness. Plus I can only tolerate so many children losing their balloons.
vidGuy @ Apr 30th 2007 12:01PM
There better be a hell of a lot of synergy for the PS3 Collector's Edition price of $69.99!
I'm most interested in the Wii version.
Jack of No Trades @ Apr 30th 2007 12:02PM
Will be a cool game! 10 different storylines. Different bosses. Will buy this for PS3.
Phillip @ Apr 30th 2007 12:08PM
Fairy Godmother Tycoon. Sheesh. Can't let it die. :)
Phillip @ Apr 30th 2007 12:09PM
Oh, and I never new the whole PS3 font = Spiderman font thing. I thought they looked similar.
It's also interesting with that one PS3 commercial that has the black goo coming out of the system and climbing up the walls. It looks exactly like Spidermand 3.
C. Grant @ Apr 30th 2007 12:10PM
Updated with XBLA games just announced. We'll have a post up shortly.
sheppy @ Apr 30th 2007 12:10PM
This has to be said...
"Mission: Combat Force
UFO Extraterrestrials
Fairy Godmother Tycoon
Penumbra: Overture
Kudos
Ciao Bella
Circus Empire"
And people wonder why the PC market is suffering. I'm just waiting for the names to finally degenerate into "Shoot The Gun to Kill The Nazis IV: The Shootening" or "Someplace Tycoon VII: Build More Shit."
JodyAnthony @ Apr 30th 2007 12:13PM
I prefer 'Tycoon Tycoon: Build your own Tycoon game"
sheppy @ Apr 30th 2007 12:15PM
@Jody Anthony
I tried that once, eventually I created "Creppy Men With Candy Tycoon" and sold it in Japan as an H-Game...
Karen @ Apr 30th 2007 12:20PM
I just downloaded Castlvania, I've been wanting to play the NES game since I picked up Dawn of Sorrow on Friday. Perfect timing.
I've never played any of the NES Castlevania's and I'm teaching my son how to play some of the great 8-Bit games for the NES era. He's had a blast this week playing Super Mario Bros. with his younger brother.
Jonathan Tran @ Apr 30th 2007 12:20PM
How about Spider Man tycoon? Or Typhoon Tycoon? Or Balloon Bufoon: Tiny Toons Tycoon (in two editions, Green Lagoon and Noon Maroon)
JodyAnthony @ Apr 30th 2007 12:21PM
lol @ both sheppy and Jonathan Tran
nerrrrrd @ Apr 30th 2007 12:25PM
spiderman 3 continues with similar gameplay as the 2nd one. Decent graphics, not amazing, but for a wide open city it looks dandy. I believe new to the series is 'action sequences' similar to God of War. For a movie tie-in, this is a very good game. A solid rent for sure.
dontlikeitmodit @ Apr 30th 2007 12:31PM
I have been looking forward to punching Topher Grace in the face !
Todd @ Apr 30th 2007 12:39PM
The novelty of slinging through town and whatnot is fun at first, but wears off. After that boredom sets in. I think this game will be a rent.

"The novelty of slinging through town and whatnot is fun at first, but wears off. After that boredom sets in. I think this game will be a rent."
Kinda like swinging your arms like a fool with the wiimote? After a year the novelty of using gestures to input commands will wear off. After that boredom sets in the system will be a good trade-in.
sheppy @ Apr 30th 2007 12:48PM
Jack, can we go one topic without yu inciting console wars?
Jack of No Trades @ Apr 30th 2007 12:53PM
Sorry sheppy.
I have to take out my frustrations somewhere.
Todd @ Apr 30th 2007 12:55PM
@Jack of No Trades
I'm talking of one game, with maintains the same style gameplay as the previous sequels. You're trying to commit the same thought to any and every gaming company who dreams up a game for the Wii. That's a pretty ignorant response on your part.
Jack of No Trades @ Apr 30th 2007 1:01PM
I want it to maintain the same style of gameplay. Its Spiderman. What do you want him to do? Not swing with a web anymore? Do you want him to swing with a chain instead?
Skwurl @ Apr 30th 2007 1:04PM

Doubtful.
Joystiq seems to be a troll magnet for kiddies like him.
Paviel @ Apr 30th 2007 1:06PM
"Kinda like swinging your arms like a fool with the wiimote? After a year the novelty of using gestures to input commands will wear off. After that boredom sets in the system will be a good trade-in."
Five months and counting...
umm...hello?? @ Apr 30th 2007 1:11PM
definitely a rental for Spiderman3 (depending on reviews)...will probably go with Wii version or PS3 version for the rental (maybe both, again, depending on reviews).
The only promising games this week look like: Catan for XBLA (love the board game but would be willing to forgo all the tedious setup) and Calling All Cars (but again, will await reviews and opinions before opening up my wallet)...I'm already going to have my hands full in May with the Halo3 beta...
Todd @ Apr 30th 2007 1:14PM
@Jack of No Trades
I find your tirade about the Wii, pointless. You're claiming that swinging your hands around and novelty gestures gets old, yet this Limited Edition Spiderman 3 game for the PS3 is promoting that very gameplay in attempt to get consumers to buy THAT game over other console version.
Alex @ Apr 30th 2007 1:14PM
Can't wait for both the movie and the game, I will probably get the Wii version over the 360 one depending on the reviews.
Ken @ Apr 30th 2007 1:26PM
@ Jack
"Do you want him to swing with a chain instead?"
Yes.
Next Question. :)

IslandLife @ Apr 30th 2007 1:57PM
Heyyy!!! Get your PS2 games off my Wii.
NO! You betta get your Wii games off my PS2. Sucka.
TimeLess @ Apr 30th 2007 2:32PM
@Jack...
although I agree with you 100% you have to be careful with the sensitive ones on blogs sites, especially this one.....
Targeting the wii, wether you believe yourself to be right, is just asking for trouble, from all sides, mainly the overzealous fanbots....so just don't say something unless it's necessary....you come off sorta as a ps3 fanboy, that alone probably offends people that you like the most hated system out there...
samfish @ Apr 30th 2007 2:40PM
You can't see me, TimeLess, but I am rolling my eyes at you SO HARD...
Jack of No Trades @ Apr 30th 2007 2:44PM
TimeLess
I know what you mean buddy.
These fanboys are wiily wiily cwazy! lol
But anyways, I love debating with the people on this site. Some people take my commenting too serious. Just kick back & debate. I have PS3 & 360 and my girl owns a Wii so im hardly bias.
Todd @ Apr 30th 2007 2:45PM
@TimeLess
Should note that, in relation to negative comments regarding the Wii, Jack of No Trades makes the first mention. I think he's the only one concerned here, which makes me wonder if he's just trolling instead.
Jack of No Trades @ Apr 30th 2007 2:47PM
Todd
How am I trolling when you said that this Spiderman gameplay is just the same ol crap.
I countered it with a wii statement. If it upset you go sit on the porch.
Todd @ Apr 30th 2007 2:49PM
@Jack of No Trades
I dunno man. There's a time and place for a debate, and Joystiq doesn't strike me as as suitable locale. Sometimes your comments just asking for retribution, which questions whether you're really looking for a debate or something more heated.
Todd @ Apr 30th 2007 2:51PM
@Jack of No Trades
You didn't counter with anything viable. You just shoveled out the typical Wii bashing comment, which had NOTHING to do with my initial comment. It's just bait. That's trolling.
Jack of No Trades @ Apr 30th 2007 2:54PM
Todd
I think the gameplay is good. I would rather use the traditional controller than the gesture controller.
Do we need to talk about the birds and the bees?
Jack of No Trades @ Apr 30th 2007 2:57PM
Todd
Just relax buddy. Im just pressing your buttons. See what happens when you get too loyal with one console.
TimeLess @ Apr 30th 2007 3:00PM
@Jack
I read your past comments, I really don't think you ever were bias, just saying that you are probably a rare breed....someone who don't mind to buy a play all kinds of games....even now...is a spiderman game really something to get excited about?.but for you ..but too you who can't stand any kind of bashing to anything have no choice to lash out at whoever does it....which is why you talk primarily about the ps3....the number one hated console...
Sorry in anyway, that is just an opinion
Todd @ Apr 30th 2007 3:01PM
@Jack of No Trades
I will note that the PS3 version will use the Sixaxis controller as part of the gameplay. In order to maintain consistency, one would hope this feature could be turned off.
Yes, dad, tell me of the birds and bees. ;)
Jack of No Trades @ Apr 30th 2007 3:02PM
Anyways, I need to figure out how to translate Solidworks files to Catia V5 without having to remodel everything. POS Catia! 15,000 for one scope is such a rip off!

I have always been the type to go for the underdog and against the odds. Whether its a sports team or game machine. I like being in the minority. It makes you stronger.
NintendoFanbot @ Apr 30th 2007 3:12PM
LOL @ Maximum Carnage being a good Spidey game
Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin for the SEGA-CD (not the lame Genesis crap) was awesome and inspired the following.
Spider-Man for N64/PSX/DC was Activision's first go at their current formula.
I also have Spider-Man The Movie 1&2 for GC. I really have to say that I love 2 tons more than the first.
Also I have Spider-Man/Venom: Seperation Anxiety, the prequel[sequel?] to Maximum Carnage, it's a fun beat-em-up.
I haven't yet played Ultimate Spider-Man, but it sounds decent.
I really hope the Wii version turns out good. :)
