I agree about GUNVALKYRIE, wackychan. Underappreciated game that I am still watching for on the Xbox 360 compatibility updates.

As to difficulty, to me it's not a question that you can answer without thinking about fun. I liked God of War up through the desert between Athens and the Temple of Pandora. Around the point of getting to the temple and all the fights after that, there was no more novelty to the game. Instead of introducing new enemies, they just made you fight more of the same kinds at once. I started getting bored.

The first time I got to a fight that was kind of hard after that point, I stopped playing. It's not that it was too hard. It was just too hard for me to care about working at it when I was tired of the game.

I just got finished playing Twilight Princess for the second time, and I can say with 100% certainty that it has been dumbed way down from previous installments. I had three bottles total, and never (not even once) did I get below 2 bottles full of potion. During the final boss battle, there are hearts in jars lining the floors, which kept me from having to use any potion at all. During the last stage of the final boss battle, there was a fairy in a skull. In other words, there was no way that I was going to fail to defeat the final boss, or any boss before. Remember Link to the Past where enemies had an actual chance of killing you? What happened to that? Even Wind Waker had more challenging boss fights (except for the final fight, which was easier than even TP's final fight). Games like Zelda need modes like Easy, Medium, and Hard to keep themselves anywhere close to the difficulty of games such as Ninja Gaiden. It's not like it would be hard to implement either; Each mode could just add more enemies, in higher numbers, or more frequently (sometimes you run through TP and rooms have no enemies at all. Instead of a puzzle, you pull a switch and the locked door opens. A monkey could figure it out)

Meh, I was upset with Twilight Princess's poor visuals (it looks like it could run on the PS2 or the dreamcast >

Anyone bother reading the full article? Joystiq's post on it totally misses the point.

The writer is advocating games written to be accessible by the handicapped. Action elements in RPG's is just a preamble to get you thinking about the challenged handicapped gamers faces all the time.

Wait, so, one of the hardest DS games gets made even harder on the Wii, and you call it an over-arching "simple" system where all games are made for children who can pretty much win just by mashing buttons.

Yes, this makes sense. To prove it, please find the nearest cluster of ten-year olds and have them play the X-missions of Trauma Center. Better yet, do the Challenges of Elebits. Heck, I'd love to see one even be able to FINISH Banana Blitz. Remember, there are two entire worlds after you "beat" the game... if you can even manage that. Those two worlds are only unlocked if you can manage to beat the previous eight worlds without using a continue. Seriously. Good luck.

If you're going to troll, at least do some research.

The reason I call for a ban on all escort missions is that they're terrible by definition. This is my opinion, of course. I simply don't like having to play protector. Cooperative play is one thing, but protecting the whatever from whomever because they can't fight back and are really vulnerable is NO FUN. Its the one part of Dead Rising I absolutely hate - especially because there's a bunch of achievments linked to escorting multiple survivors back at once. (Not that I can play anything on my recently deceased 360)

If games get any easier, i'm going to vomit. I dont feel any satisfaction in being good at a game that a 6 year old can pick up and easily play.

What the problem is, these developers are trying to target children so they will get hooked on videogames. And when kids get older they are looking for games that are still easy to pick up and play.

I, being 25, didnt grow up playing easy games. I grew up playing challenging games. When I was young, my friends and I would compete at trying to beat ninja gaiden. And not everyone actually beat it. But the ones who did got respect for it.

Nowadays when somebody beats a game you hear, "yeah, i beat it too" or "yeah, i'm almost finished with it" Instead of hearing, "I don't believe you"

Personally, I'd be happy enough with action sequences in RPGs as long they were optional. I'll be the first to admit that I'm -ahem- somewhat differently coordinated (it was touch and go when I was younger as to whether the doctors would announce that I had cerebral palsy), and I play RPGs _precisely_ because they don't require much physical coordination. Except that recently they've had so many damned action sequences stuck in the way of the plot that I haven't been able to actually finish a game in years!

I don't begrudge action gamers their genre, but they should try and remember that they aren't the be all and end all of the whole industry- we can't all have twitch reflexes, and we shouldn't have to be relegated to the back benches by those that do...

I just thought of a good set of action/platformer/puzzle games that provided a perfect amount of difficulty: The first two Oddworld games, Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exodus.

The jump to 3d on the Xbox with Munch wasn't so great, but they did alright with Stranger's Wrath.

The games were challenging, and the story was always compelling. I don't think we'll see anything quite like it again, but one can hope.

hahaha are you serious? Is this a joke? I think action games are broken in the opposite way, they're made overly easy so people won't get 'frustrated'
The point of a game is a challenge, you don't just get rid of the rubiks cube because some people 'can't' do it.

Honestly my problem with games today is they're so easy there's no point, even if you do die, you 'continue' right back where you were, so you're basically invincible. I don't think I've played a hard game in years, except for a few games if they have a "hell" or "extreme" mode. Note I am not a gamer nor do I pride myself on being good. I'm not, you would probably beat me at Halo or any other game. But even I think games nowadays are just so easy as to be pointless.

In Freespace 2, if you failed a mission 3 times in a row, it would give you the option to skip the mission. In any game that has a decent story, this is a great feature. I've been unable to play past parts in many games in the past, and because of that, never got to find out the rest of the story. It would be bad if you were watching a 2 hour movie and never got to see the ending, but it's really terrible when you've invested 10+ hours into something and never get to see the ending ever.

I lost interest in action games precisely because of the stupid puzzles and doors that require special keys and such crap.

FPS with other people can be fun if they're with other people. open everything and let us kill each other or other people.

Sports games are generally fun to me no matter what - plug in, play, game ends, etc.

Car racing games could be fun with others but too many of them require that I spend time getting licenses or beating tracks against AI to open other tracks. Give me all the tracks at once and let me play with my friends. I don't care about the story or the cash angle or any of that crap. Just let me race. Just like a football game - let me play.

Yup, unlocking stuff in racing games is crap (for me at least). But since I have no choice, I just plan to do it before I invite anyone over for multiplayer.

It is under those circumstances that i find cheating in a single player game justifiable. If you need to see the ending but are at your wits end; cheat.

Ninja Gaiden had the perfect difficulty, imo.

Most other action games, I agree, are too easy.

When you're a seasoned battle-scarred gamer like me, you know that the ending of a game (even if it is only having pizza with the president after saving him from ninjas or a "thanks for playing") is a REWARD that you earn, and to be able to beat the game is an honor and a privilege! You young folks act like you're owed the ending of a game too hard for you?! Hah! Let's play Battletoads and see who survives level 3. (Hint: that's the racing one.) Today many games are made too easy on purpose, just to make the ending reachable by the filthy masses who weren't raised on Ninja Gaiden and Kid Icarus.

@58

yes, completed Battletoads. however, have NOT beaten Super Mario Bros. (original). go figure.

re: gamasutra's article
short response (regarding disabled people): obviously they haven't seen the youtube video with the wiimote strapped to the girl's head to control her character.

longer response (regarding action games): I enjoy videogames (obviously), most of the original NES action titles were both challenging AND rewarding (for the most part) when you beat them (some endings were obviously lacking: "Congratulations!" and roll credits). It IS nice to have games with multiple levels (Halo and Halo2) so that my sister or girlfriend can play the campaign mode without getting killed (unless I betray them, because that NEVER happens with the rocket launcher) to show them what the game is about. However, if I want to play it alone I'll set it to Heroic or Legendary (depending on how frustrated I want to be), and if I play with my brother it's definitely Legendary. Some games have good balance, most don't.

so are action games REALLY broken, or is it just poor playtesting/game development?? Calling All Cars was JUST released and apparently had frustrating AI with the magnet weapon, and was subsequently patched to tone down the difficulty....perfect example.

sorry this post might seem patchy, I re-edited a few times to delete irrelevant parts, it seemed pretty in sync to me, but of course they're my thoughts, hopefully it would make sense to me.

Aha! The truth comes out! I can annihilate the 3rd level, but I've only passed the water level with the gears chasing me 2 times.

Maybe the ESRB should put another rating on the back of every game, regarding difficulty. They could put the recommended skill level right next to the recommended age.

I vote that games no longer have healing items or regeneration items, etc etc. I always end up selling the stupid things anyways and, for those that do use them, battles become an idiotic contest to see whether your pile of potions outlasts the enemy's health bar.

Case in point: Every RPG ever made...or rather every game with an inventory system.

Of course there are necessary exceptions (for example, games in which the healing items are incredibly weak or rare and resource management is vital to success), but seriously, I am sick of picking up food items in Castlevania and selling all my herbs in RE4 (well, except for the occasional yellow).

No more healing. Or if there is healing, you should have to run your character over a damn orb or a big white box with a red cross on it ala Doom. Yeah sure it makes no sense, but neither does collecting little red potions and chugging them as a beastie kicks your ass.

I don't think action games are too hard, I just have a problem with ridiculously hard bosses. It totally ruins a game that was once fun, but now becomes a frustration-fest because you can't go any further until you beat uber-boss with a health bar that's 10 times what yours is. I hate bosses!

Oddly, though, I loved Shadow of the Colossus and finished that game. What's wrong with me???!!!
