Jaffe un-promises, Calling All Cars delayed
Like a little girl struggling to keep her favorite doll out of the garage sale bin, David Jaffe is returning to the world of Calling All Cars to make some fixes and revise some of the criticisms the title received via reviews, even after announcing that the title has gone gold, according to a post he left on the NeoGAF forums. The title, therefore, has been delayed for an unspecified time.
The bug fixes concern network connection and voice chat issues. Jaffe apologizes, of course, and notes that the previously-mentioned release date was never official. ("Sony was kinda annoyed that I claimed 5/3 as release date," he said.) Would gamers have preferred the game be released on time with a patch promised at a later time? We're leaning towards no, given the importance of multiplayer in the game, although our opinions might sway depending on how long these two "key bugs" take to fix.

I have NO problem with a delay in favour of a more completely game.
what i am against is 2-3 months delays. if those are the two fixes, the game shouldn't take more than 1 week to fix.
Tadioku @ May 1st 2007 9:20PM
I am happy this is happening this will shut all those reviews up
Bames Jond @ May 1st 2007 9:20PM
like a little girl indeed
Suba @ May 1st 2007 9:27PM
while its nice he is gonna make the game a more complete experience etc it comes across as very childish. The Game didn't get the reviews he wanted so hes gonna delay its release and force new reviews so he gets what he wants
Neebs @ May 1st 2007 9:30PM
Anyone read his response to his 6.5 on GameSpot? He got like 8.x scores on like 1UP and IGN, but A SIX POINT FIVE FROM GAMESPOT? OH NOES! This moron went into a huge swear filled, rambling rant. Did Miyamoto do that when TP received an 8.8? Or when SPM received an 8.8? No. STFU, you are not a game god because you worked on God Of War.
JJ @ May 1st 2007 9:38PM
So now all of a sudden its a bad thing to fix bugs before launch Neebs? and i dont recall his rant being swear filled , in fact if anything his rant (On his own blog on his own time mind you) seemed pretty level headed. Whats wrong with a guy defending his work?
Whatever he posts on his own time about whatever he wants is fine with me..I'm sure lots of devs have things to say about reviews of their games, so who cares if he's more vocal? Once again it was on his own blog, its not like he sent out a massive email
Zsavior @ May 1st 2007 9:43PM
So if the game was finished why does it need tweaking? I say Cheers to David Jaffe It is rear to meet Any developer Willing to admit the reviewers have a Valid opinion and his game needs improvement.
Somebody once mentioned that this game marks the type of direction PS3 is going towards, and to tell you the truth by David Jaffe's actions I certainly hope so. Because 600 dollars is more than a fair price to pay to get developers willing to not rush their product to the Market to appease raving hungry fanboy idiots who will just turn on them in the long run( look at sony fanbase).
I am Dead serious when I say I read this and it actually makes me happy. If he feels he can improve on the game to stuff nay sayers and give Sony fans a great product, the more true fans should approve the delay. Before anybody says different just Remember Nintendo shafting GC fans for Twilight Princess. Delay after delay till it was finally pushed to another system, but the finished product is a great gaming experience. I for one rather a finished product worth playing than a half assed rushed one that is just good enough. That is my two cents.
vectorscalar @ May 1st 2007 9:57PM
Wow, I guess you really pissed him off. He fired off another, then promised to go dark.
oGMo @ May 1st 2007 9:45PM
@5: So, it's bad because he wrote a commentary telling Gamespot they're a bunch of dumbasses---which they are, and you all know it. And it's bad because he's then taking a little extra time to fix issues, just so they're not an issue. But it would be bad if he released the game with the issues. Basically, with the ranting fanboys (who don't even have PS3s), he can't win: but then, you didn't matter anyway.
Really, his rant was mostly about "legitimate issues" vs "baseless complaining". He noted specific issues that IGN brought up that he went on to fix. He then noted that Gamespot had nothing to contribute, yet gave a low score anyway. This is stupid---both for gamers and developers---as it doesn't help at all.
I think the most suprising part of this story is that anyone actually read Gamespot to see that they gave a low score to begin with.
WhackMushroom @ May 1st 2007 10:34PM
cant they just release it then update it later ... wtf is digital distribution for if not easy as pie versioning.

ralphie @ May 1st 2007 9:54PM
according to his latest blog, he is not happy with you guys...that's for damn sure.
Ken @ May 1st 2007 9:54PM
So because Gamespot rated it bad, he's going to work on it some more?
Why not work on it some more in the first place, before putting out the final product?
Sorry (Sony fanboys, please close your eyes... or just stop reading from here) but Jaffe is entirely too much of a douchebag. He really is just a little girl. I hope he wears a training bra, because he's certainly looking like he can fit it after this display. What a whiny little bitch!
"Oh no! Gamespot didn't like my poor attempt of a game... I guess I should ACTUALLY WORK ON IT THIS TIME!!11!"
Jaffe, let REAL game designers work. Please?
;)
Ajguy @ May 1st 2007 10:01PM
To me, this reeks of "Hmm, some stuff is broken, but hopefully no one notices." It seems Jaffe got caught and now he needs to fix it. Network connection and voice chat issues should have been pretty plain to see earlier.
kingofwale @ May 1st 2007 9:58PM
>Why not work on it some more in the first place, before putting out the final product?
same thing apply to everything ever made. so, what's your point? nothing is perfect in this world, Kudo for him to actually take it and go back to fix it.
Ken @ May 1st 2007 9:59PM
Kudo for him for being a bitch and not taking the bullet for a shitty project he said he'd release?
No thanks, he doesn't deserve any kudos. I'm sure he knew before stating the release date that it would suck. And now that one person says it sucks, he's gotta go and be a bitch about it...
Ken @ May 1st 2007 10:03PM
*waits a few seconds*
BAH! Just fucking with you guys. Had ya goin' eh?
Anyway, here's to hoping he gets the final bugs and stuff worked out before announcing the release date.
And here's hoping the game will turn out as great as it should!
Take your time David, take your time.
Edge of Blade @ May 1st 2007 10:22PM
While I think this guy is a whiny baby (who's mother should was his mouth out) and a bit of a hypocrit to blast Gamespot AND go back to retool it (he should be THANKING them), I have to recognize that this isn't that bad...except that he took what "Gold" means and **** on it.
Next time, put the game out for evaluation, go back and retool it, and THEN call it gold...like anyone else. There are people in the industry making decisions on what's gold and what isn't. I would like to see what costs various companies realize to "un-gold" this game. Why does this prima donna think he's any different from any other developer that he should get special treatment?
God of War made this guy's head HUGE and I'm starting to get a little pissed.
Kinsella @ May 1st 2007 10:39PM
I lose more and more respect for Jaffe every time I read one of his blogs. I don't care of you are making the best games in the world, an asshole is an asshole.

Gamespot just all around sucks anyway. Their reviews are as reliable our local weatherman.
Vexorg @ May 1st 2007 11:45PM
Is it just me, or do there seem to be an awful lot of prima donnas in game development lately? If I was the Gamespot reviewer I'd give the game a 5.6 next time around just to see how much he flies off the handle...
nick @ May 2nd 2007 12:01AM
I'm sensing we need year end award for the person or entity who throws the biggest public tantrum.
Sony is already guaranteed a spot with their handling of the leak about Home.
And now, I'm nominating David Jaffe for releasing CAC to reviewers, ranting about it, then saying it's still under development.
umm...hello?? @ May 2nd 2007 12:08AM
re: this delay
am happy that they'd rather delay the game and have it fixed than to push it out with what's becoming the standard "we'll just patch it later....maybe."
re: CAC the game
given the current state of the reviews (at least GameSpot DID back up their statements), I'll wait for gamers opinions to level it out...wouldn't be a problem if I could possibly rent it as part of my GameFly package, but to just shell out $10 sight unseen with no previous game of the same genre from the developer?? pass (sorry--but when my gaming habits are expensive as mine I'm going to be picky). but hey, at least it's SPLIT SCREEN MULTIPLAYER!! (take that, Motorstorm!!)
re: Jaffe's blog
cool that he wants to connect with his audience, and let us inside his thought(s)...obviously someone who's passionate about his babies, so to speak.

@20:
Wow, way to quote another loser. Who the fuck listens to the Goo Goo Dolls?
Dirtyboy @ May 2nd 2007 12:40AM
The guy may know how to make decent games but he is a first-class jerk. So what if the big gamesites give it a low score? Customers prove time and time again that the highest rated games aren't always the number one sellers anyway (although people buy a lot of crap games). I am glad that he is tweaking the game but I hope he isn't doing it just to earn a gold star but to actually make the game more fun. If I had a PS3 I would buy it because it is multi-player and it looks like some good mindless fun. The only thing I look for in reviews is if there is a common complaint or gameplay issue that they all mention and to weigh whether or not it would affect my enjoyment of the title.
Ross Miller @ May 2nd 2007 1:31AM
Of course, that other site dissed him, too: http://kotaku.com/?refId=256515
The beauty of a blog, by merit of its push to editorialize. And with a blog, anyone can speak their mind, for better and worse.
Is Jaffe entitled to his opinion as much as we are to ours? Definitely. But to swear off giving your opinion over a disagreement in analogy usage is the wrong move.
(article in question: http://criminalcrackdown.blogspot.com/2007/05/thats-it-for-nowsee-you-soon.html )
Jaffe has proved himself a good designer, and I'm sure CAC will be enjoyable. But if one line, one connotation causes him to cease blogging for an indeterminable amount of time, then there draws a line where someone in the industry and someone covering the industry have to have disparate viewpoints.
GamerG @ May 2nd 2007 3:43AM
SO are the reviewers going to get paid for play testing his game for him?
Bill @ May 2nd 2007 2:41AM
And people complain about the Microsoft certification process. Perhaps they certify to avoid disasters like this one.
Aex @ May 2nd 2007 3:06AM
Oooh, Can you smell that? It's a shit storm! Everyone duck!
Btw, I don't agree with you here Ross. I don't see how your "editorialized" post makes up for the fact barely any of it is true. As least it comes off that way, perhaps you were shooting for a different meaning with your words... Either way the comments comming should be explosive!
Kelvin @ May 2nd 2007 3:34AM
Zsaviour I agree completely with you on this post.
ledorky @ May 2nd 2007 4:19AM
A big THANK YOU to Ross for pissing Jaffe off even fu rther and getting him to finally shut up (even for a little bit). What a tool. He can say whatever he wants on his blog but OH NOES if someone calls him on his constant bitchfest on their blog and disagrees with his insecure self. He better hope he gets another hit series because God of War will start getting old in another iteration or two.
On Kotaku, everyone there seems to be patting each other in the back and sucking on you-know-who's privates. I'd post there if it wasn't invite only.
Rod Oracheski @ May 2nd 2007 6:01AM
Is he going to address the largest complaint - the lack of levels?
Burnt Meatloaf @ May 2nd 2007 6:16AM
How many levels do you need for $10?
I'm not sure what to say. On one level, I find it reassuring that someone out there is willing to put more effort and time into a game that's selling for cheap. On the other hand, people are making a real big fuss over a "small" game. Also, if the game has outstanding bugs, why was it announced as complete in the first place?
Obviously, online distribution is a very immature business. I'll be glad when all this smoothens out in 2-3 years.
Neebs @ May 2nd 2007 6:23AM
@ Those those responded to me:
I hardly think it's professional to do what he did over ONE review.
Rod Oracheski @ May 2nd 2007 7:09AM
"How many levels do you need for $10?"
How many levels did the Burger King games have? I know that Roboblitz was $15 - but it sported 19 levels.
FOUR levels, in a game where the replay factor is limited by the levels, is pretty sad. Oh, there's 10 cars...but they're all identical aside from appearance. The only way to shake up the game is to try a new level, and there are...once again...only FOUR.
Even for $10, that sucks.
I would guess there's some DLC coming for it down the road to add new levels. If it's not free, I expect to see the skies burning as the Internet lights itself on fire in outrage*.
* - like they do for every XBLM release
Unskinnybob @ May 29th 2007 6:37AM
Boohoo - you upset the emo developer.
GaryM @ May 2nd 2007 8:09AM

Jake @ May 2nd 2007 8:23AM
Bummage. I guess I've always been in the group that doesn't think this game will be very fun anyways, so I could care less.
Rob @ May 2nd 2007 8:51AM
@Edge of Blade: "I have to recognize that this isn't that bad...except that he took what "Gold" means and **** on it."
What else is new? How long has Beta and Release Candidate been used incorrectly?
And considering there's no master to burn and send to publishing, do online games really have Gold for that matter?
Kizzle @ May 2nd 2007 9:20AM
Since I know Jaffe is reading this, since he can't resist: Kotaku won't be "putting Joystiq out of business" anytime soon, retard.
Petulant little child. Go back and cry into your pillow some more that your stupid little game isn't hailed as the greatest thing of all time. Maybe if you had actually lived up to the self-generated hype, you wouldn't be in this predicament now, fucko. You fail.
hoos30 @ May 2nd 2007 9:29AM
What a whiny ....brat. If the problem was really "netcode", it would not have been gold in the first place. This is a total meltdown in response to the Gamespot review. I wouldn't expect to see this game before August now.
Phranctoast @ May 2nd 2007 9:40AM
I wonder how many peoples hate for Jaffe has to do with their hate for the ps3.
How would any of you act if some "news" site published shit like this about you. Most of you can even handle being called out my other posters here, and you unnecessarily lose your mind. I dont blame hime for his response. If I were Jaffe I might have found Ross Miller just to take a shit in his mouth.
anyway...
i really want a new twisted metal game. I would like Jaffe to work on it since his influence made those games great.
sheppy @ May 2nd 2007 9:43AM
"And people complain about the Microsoft certification process. Perhaps they certify to avoid disasters like this one."
So that's why Contra, Assault Heroes, and even some Call Of Duty packs all had huge glitches and issues. Microsoft Certification process is nothing more than Microsoft trying to reinstitute the kind of iron rule Nintendo had with Base 10. They are wanting to say what games get released when and they've constantly stated this. But oh well.
The delay in question is in regards to networking and voice chat issues. Both things not even mentioned in the Gamespot review. He's not adding new levels, he's not adding more difference between the cars or even new weapons. He's balancing and sending out.
His second and third responses, I'm torn on. He comes off as a bitch but then if you look at his blog, he went from having a nice community of people asking questions, offering support or possible changes, and generally being a place for the fans to suddenly becoming flooded with what I refer to as "fucktards." A bunch of people from many websites signed up just to say "fuck you, jaffe. yur not a god, yur a piece of shit and yur shitty games play like shit." So, truthfully, I guess I would have had the same response. Nothing kills a community like fucktards.
In regards to the size of the content, Worms on XBLA has three themes. THEMES. This is a background image, a dirt texture, a music loop, and an assortment of random spawning items. And just three of those. And when my friends and I play? We don't even notice or complain. We are too busy swinging from ropes and dropping cluster bombs on each other.
A game like Calling All Cars hails back to RC Pro AM, Badlands, and Super Offroad with a bit of Capture The Flag and Twisted Metal. Sucks that it only has four stages but that kind of gameplay doesn't need the variety of something like an FPS. Just as Worms doesn't NEED a huge amount of themes.
sheppy @ May 2nd 2007 9:45AM

The funny part? All the comments he stated on those blog entries never made it on Joystiq. Not even in the comments section. In other words, he wasn't referring to this site. Way to be a tardland.

Wow the first Joystiq attack comment, amazing. It took somebody long enough. Yes DAMN YOU JOYSTIQ, see when Jaffe speaks his mind that is all COOL and being "HARDCORE" you call it like it is and well yeah you seen the post. Get them flak Jackets out, journalist aren't supposed to have an opinion any more based off of facts, only game developers get to say what they want. /sarcasm off!
This is a weird day in gaming where I see Joystiq, and Gamespot laying down the law. /Salute, Good work soldiers, now I am going to duck and cover as the Jaffites go into a blood craze.
