Even though Ken Kutaragi is "retiring" from Sony (it saddens us to imagine security walking him to the front door, while he carries a cardboard box full of his belongings), he had already "envisioned" the PlayStation 4, 5, and 6, and probably also helped solidify his "graduation" by cornering people and going on about his PlayStation master plan for world domination.
His next project appears to be working on a net-based game console, which sounds both kooky and smart at the same time. But, does he mean a console that uses processes similar to the SETI program and Folding@home? Or does he mean some sort of a console that just lives online and all games are purchased online? He could possibly even be hinting at a Giant Crab Network that will specialize in, well ... you know.
Either way, it's all old-hat for Kutaragi, you had to have been integral to the design of the PlayStation 9.

Alright, enought already...Sony has admitted the guy is crazy and given him a nice padded office. You guys don't need to chastise this goon when he hardly deserves it. I mean, he's nuts. You're taking cheap shots.

Hey Kevin, why dont you tell how you really feel about Ken? Now, lets see you create something that sells 215+ million units worldwide before you blow your horn off.

Net-based as in all games would be downloadable and you pay for them online? If that is the idea, he would be excluding the whole third world and many other people in the developed countries out of the gaming industry, I don't see how that would be a step forward, business wise. Maybe him stepping down was for the best.

Konny, that's a dumb arugment. By your analogy, people can't critisize president Bush unless they have been president themselves. Plus Kutaragi wasn't the sole idea of the playstation franchise, sony fans give this guy way too much credit.

It's virtually guaranteed that Nintendo and Microsoft were officially designing their next consoles the moment the Wii and 360 were finialised, so of course Sony is designing the PS4.
As for the PS5 and PS6, there's pretty much no chance they're in the "design" phase. They're likely in the concept phase (no chips, no hardware, just ideas), trying to set-forth a multi-year plan for the division.
Any company that doesn't ask itself "What do we want to be doing in 10 years?" is insane. This is just part of that process.

for all we hate krazy ken, we must really love him. Because of the kick to the arses of sega and the old nintendo that today we have a competitive console gaming industry.
If not for the ps1, today we'll be playing hyper 1billion colour 2D sprites in full HD with superduper 5gigabit cartridges.
With him retiring, the playstation brand no longer has a hate figure. Bill Gates is a evil c***. Since steve balmer took over, suddenly ms isn't as evil as before. Same could be said. Remember the old c*** hiroshi yamauchi??

Cardboard box full of his belongings? Gentlemen, he worked a lot of extra hours and kissed a lot of a55 so that he can afford a $600 luggage set to take his belongings to the trunk of his Lexus and take them in STYLE to his executive office at Cellius.

Don't worry I'm sure you don't mind because you seem to like throwing it around occasionally.
Ken wasn't the only krazy kid at Sony's offices and I hope that higher-ups start realizing that. If the only person to be penalized is Ken all that really means was that he was a fallguy when his success should tell differently. The PS3 debacle involves Sony's other multimedia divisions trying to strongarm their way into the Playstation's huge userbase.
PSthree would be a good start for change. ;)

"If not for the ps1, today we'll be playing hyper 1billion colour 2D sprites in full HD with superduper 5gigabit cartridges."
Both Nintendo and Sega wanted to leap into the 3D phase, don't give credit to the PS1 for being the first system of that gen out, it wasn't until after Mario 64 that the gaming industry shifted to real 3D games on consoles.
"With him retiring, the playstation brand no longer has a hate figure. Bill Gates is a evil c***. Since steve balmer took over, suddenly ms isn't as evil as before. Same could be said. Remember the old c*** hiroshi yamauchi??"
Yamauchi, along with his views, were getting old, so you're right on him and Iwata changed things around, but noone bashes bill Gates, he doesn't even intefere much except when making public speeches here and there. the Xbox "c***" would be J Allard, who too needs to retire, and Playstation's hate figure now is Mr. "Ridge Racccceeeerrr" Kaz
It's starting to sound as if we wanted democracy in this industry and the CEOs need to be replaced after every generation.

19,
the true 3d in console is nintendo's fx chip in certain games. But, the ps was the 1st to offer arcade quality 3D graphics. Both 32x and saturn had botched 3d capability as their systems were optimised for 2d.
quote from wiki,
"....The first idea was a new Mega Drive/Genesis with more colors and a 32-bit processor....."

alex,
ps1 launched with toshinden, a 3d fighter. That's pretty 3d to me. go check out when n64 was launch. Mario64 was 1st true 3d platformer. And go googgling articles on microsoft's antitrust trial if you think bill gates isn't being hated. I believe he was a recipient of a delicious pie at his face. Because you haven't read much on him now since he stepped down from being ceo?

Wait, he had plans for a 4, 5, and 6? I thought his idea was that the ps3 was the ultimate supercomputer gaming device that let you play games in the 4th deminsion and wouldn't need to be replaced with a new console for 20 years, with the only updates to make it more powerful are bigger harddrives and modular ram add-ons. Jesus what a loon.

It will take Nintendo 20 years to even get up to the PS3 specs. Graphics will never be good enough until photorealism is achieved for some games.

Jack that's a pretty far off statement, even in the manner you meant it.
all anyone has to do to be a graphics powerhouse is license the latest and greatest design from ATi or Nvidia as consoles have been doing since last gen.
in this respect, *both* Sony and Nintenedo licensed non-bleeding age designs from these companies to save money among other reasons.

I think a response is in order to the comment about Bill Gates. He is not, in any way, shape, or form, evil. He gives more money to charity than most of the world put together. He gives more of his own time to charity than most people would. Say what you want about microsoft's business pratices but to refer to him as an evil c*** is a bit ridiculous.
That being said, Ken is a little a crazy but most really intelligent people are, good luck to that Krazy bastard,

Hohoho: I meant in the Gaming community, everyone has a neutral stance for this guy. He didn't deserve a pir trown in his face, any guy who finds it deserving must've not read how many humanitarian things Gates has done for the world.

Toshinden is not as big of an influence in 3D gaming as Mario 64, which was one of the biggest pioneers of that generation. Let's stick to the original argument however; you said if it wasn't for the PS1, we would still be playing 2D games, but you're creditting the PS1 just for being the first console of that generation to be out, Nintendo's intentions were to go 3D even before Toshinden.

@ Jack. I believe Nintendo's new philosophy just relies on giving the consumers something more economical
My guess is what we'll see next gen from them will be something like 360+, similar to how Wii is Xbox+
And i could see them working on the PS4 in that they were getting concrete preliminary design models on the floor, but nothing anywhere close to what we'll see at retail
The big question is: will Sony stay in the industry that long. It can be an honest question, because they rely on lots of console sales so that they can get lots of software sales and make up for the hardware loss. The way PS3 seems to be going, they would have to wait until they get the prices WAY down so that they can sell it in a reasonable bracket and make a little profit. Either that, or their software attach rate would have to go up into the sky.
That's the problem with a loss-leader strategy, it seems you either win big or go home (unless you're just trying to establish a presence like MS was with the Xbox)

mj, that wisecrack about sneaking him into E3 almost killed me.
I think Kutaragi was a brilliant engineer, but I think he got mad with power. I'm sure he didn't act alone. NintendoFanbot was probably on the money with his comment about Sony's other divisions strongarming their way into the PS division to take over our living rooms. It's the same thing MS is trying to do, but that was their goal with the first XBox from day 1 anyway.

sorry hohoho, but i recall 3d games being out a hell of a lot earlier than the arrival of the ps1. remember a couple of games called virtua racing and virtua fighter? daytona usa perhaps? and you do know the n64 was built from the ground up to be this amazing 3d powerhouse right? why else partner with SGI if all you're going to make is some 2d hyper sprite processing machine or something? so the industry would have advanced with or without sony.
