PETA talks God of War goat
PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) posted in their blog today about the Sony goat incident from the weekend. With quite a bit of temperance for PETA, they apparently got the memo of the aftermath, and didn't make an official public statement (i.e. press release to the planet). Two points to PETA for knowing who Jack Thompson is and saying they've "always sided with the video game industry against the Jack Thompsons of this world who are out to make a name for themselves by blaming gamers for all of society's problems." Of course they close the post by saying, "Sony is evidently recalling the entire 80,000 print run of the PlayStation magazine in which this story featured, though it's frankly a bit late for the victim of the stunt at this stage." Come on, it's PETA, they gotta say that.Joystiq spoke with Daphna Nachminovitch, Director of Domestic Animal and Wildlife Rescue & Information at PETA, and she told us that they received several dozen emails and phone calls about the incident over the weekend as the story broke. She says that the reason PETA didn't make a public statement is because the public was already well aware of the incident and clearly found it objectionable. Nachminovitch says, "It was something so frivolous and idiotic. I think they misread their audience because we've received a lot of statements and it doesn't look like the stunt was helpful to the audience they were trying to promote to for the game ... I know with Sony's reputation it was surprising to see something with this magnitude. Looking at the website [for the game] I don't see the connection. I don't understand how this would appeal to the people who would want this video game."
Nachminovitch was glad to see that Sony made a statement so quickly and hopes that they don't do something like this again in the future. She also noticed that there were topless women at the party and jokes, "Shouldn't that have been enough? There's no need to display an animal like that for an audience when topless women are walking around, I'm sure the audience found that far more appealing."

They borrowed it from a butcher. End of story. Go free some cows or something.

very admirable of PETA to not make asses of themselves like they usually do.
Sami @ May 1st 2007 8:34PM
She doesn't see the connection? Is she being serious?
I've been hating everything Sony has done and said with the PS3, but this time, Sony managed to appeal to me. Throw me an invite to a party like this, Sony, and I might buy a PS3 yet. I've been seeing a lot of comments standing up for Sony. I think they were in the right and the party was spot on.

Yeah too bad they fund eco-terrorists and put animals before humans, otherwise I might've actually read the article to see what they said.
I don't recall them ever siding with the video game industry or did they just say that to try to make us feel guilty? Didn't work PETA.
I hope PETA gets hit by a purple '84 Dodge Shadow.

There is only one group as annoying as Jack Thompson, It's PETA.

what the fuck was sony thinking. People reaching into the goat. WTF. Wow sony has lost it. And no a sacrificed goat doesnt have anything to do with the game. Im not for or against PETA but having this at a party was just tastless.
zwarrior @ May 1st 2007 9:09PM
Is their meddling necessary? It makes so sense to inform organizations like the PETA, GLAAD, NCAAP, etc. about something that happened days ago that they would have otherwise missed because they usually exagurate the situation just to show their faces to the media (Imus case for example)
My respect to PETA for being modest
kingofwale @ May 1st 2007 9:10PM
>And no a sacrificed goat doesnt have anything to do with the game.
hmm, it's a part of Greek mythology, something I am not an expert on and apparently neither are you. So it'd be nice if you don't make an ignorant comment about it.
Obviously it wasn't a HUGE issue with all the attendees there... for the exception of right wing nutcases like those working for Daily Mails.
MED @ May 1st 2007 9:15PM
Did anyone here actually read the article or did they just see PETA in the headline and start to bitch? seriously its not like they tore sony a new one. and why is everyone so angry at PETA? yes some of the things they do are questionable but at least they have a heart unlike some of you douchebags. This was obviously a retarded publicity stunt, no matter if they got the goat from a butcher or not the fact that it was used as a centerpiece for a party is just stupid. some of you may say "its just a goat!" but what if there was a dead dog on display instead? would it make you feel better if it was "humanely" killed? i would think not. An animal on display for publicity is an animal on display for publicity, no matter the animal or the way it was killed.
onepointfivevolt @ May 1st 2007 9:19PM
man, misread their audience?? THEY DIDN'T MISREAD ME I THINK THIS IS EFFING AWESOME.
i'm honestly disappointed that the rumours of people reaching into the goat and all that aren't true. it was ballsy, and i respect that! the point is, the goat was already dead. it wasn't slaughtered for sony. it's in somebody's belly now, probably, as well it should be!

Hey PETA, STFU!
That is all.
Rubang B @ May 1st 2007 9:40PM
Do you cut a goat's head off in the game? This is just a random Greek thing. Does eating soup from a beheaded goat have anything to do with Greek mythology? I can name a thousand random Greek things that weren't represented at this party. They picked 3 things: a bald model dressed as Kratos, naked chicks, and a DECAPITATED GOAT FULL OF SOUP. What's not to get here? Which one of these has nothing to do with the game? PETA was right. Naked chicks should be good enough to sell this stuff to all ya morans!
Jon @ May 1st 2007 9:44PM
Although I am a meat eater but I do have some care about animal cruelty (as in experimentation), though I didn't see anything wrong with what Sony did (the goat was already dead and was meant for consumption). But I do dislike PETA.
Anyway Daily Mail probably sucks more. They champion fox hunting but complain when a dead goat is brought to a private party.
Lighttech @ May 1st 2007 11:00PM
I am not a big fan of Sony, but if they piss off the ecoterrorism group known as PETA they are alright in my book.
Savok @ May 1st 2007 11:18PM
Something is going on, PETA has compared eating animals to the Holocaust (literally, in ad campaigns). Any other time they'd be screaming and wailing, but this is more akin to a mother wagging her finger and saying "you're old enough to know better".
I repeat, something is going on here.

ARRESTED FERRET-MISUSER CLAIMS "IT'S NOT ABUSE"
A ghoulish man, arrested yesterday by Kanagawa prefectural police for abusing a ferret,
most popular pet, as well as uploaded the crime scene movie to an internet bulletin board,
is reportedly claiming to be innocent because he believes "small animals are only physical
objects allowed to be knocked about."
This 30-year-old Sony employee, Shinichi Moriyama was arrested for publicly showing the
cruelest scene in which he crazily abused the ferret by strangling and so on, on the internet
"2 Channel" BBS to which he threw the snuff movie.
Moriyama, committed to Sagamihara branch of Yokohama District Public Prosecutor's Office
in the morning today, claims on inquiry that "small animal is only a physical object because it
could never have ego" so he believes that "battering such object could never be construed
as abuse."
Moriyama also says "besides the ferret, I have bought more than 30 pets such as hamsters
and rabbits, all of which I killed several days later and dumped as trash," which drives the
police to investigate more.

PETA again? Well, I was upset about this debacle before (even when it was revealed that the goat was dead prior to its display) but now I'm completely siding with Sony just because I hate PETA more. They're almost as bad as Jack Thompson. Actually, they might be worse!

PETA peaceful, civil, and fully clothed protest? this doesn't sound like PETA at all!
As a vegetarian, GOW enthusiast, and anti-PETA guy, I actually was happy when I read this. Sony done wrong and PETA done right Sony said sorry and everybody had pie (except the people at the press thing who in fact had soup and entrails)

I am glad to see PETA making a response. People should treat animals with respect. Slaughtering animals is just a testament to man's brutality, indifference, and ignorance. (Yes, I am a vegetarian.) You people think that animals don't feel pain or that their pain is not real but it actually is. Mocking PETA won't do you any good. The reason you mock them is because they have struck a chord within you, instilling a bit of guilt. Most people's response is, "I don't want to know where the meat came from." You should want to know, and if you had a heart, you'd care for the mistreatment of animals as well. Dogs, cats, goats, cows...You draw the line between dogs and cats and other mammals, why? It's all hypocrisy. Don't mock this organization for standing up against something that is quite frankly disgusting. Educate yourselves before you stand up and make a fool of yourself.
Rubang B @ May 2nd 2007 1:17AM
Whether you like or dislike PETA is irrelevant, as their official response was seriously "Naked chicks should have been enough to advertise the game. Sony is crazy. We're not touching them with a 20 foot pole."
The Destroyer @ May 2nd 2007 1:53AM
@MED
I'd just like to say that PETA did handle the situation right in this case but this is hardly a normal move for them. Anyway since you actually stuck up for PETA in general I find it a good oppurtunity to spread the word about the real PETA. First of all they support eco-terrorism. They've given money to ELF and individuals with the same intentions on many occasions.
PETA also keeps a number of freezers on their premises. For what you ask? The truth is that PETA actually kills animals and stores their bodies in said freezers. They are commiting exactly what they DON'T want animal shelters to do, which is disposing of a number of the animals they "rescue" in a humane manner.
PETA is also opposed to the idea of keeping any animal as a pet. They believe they are equal to us in EVERY respect. What they strive for is total animal liberation. This means every bear, mountain lion, and dog set free no matter the situation and allowed to roam the streets sharing any and every civil liberty we enjoy.
Here's the real kicker. PETA is opposed to any form of medical testing on animals. They believe that it's better for the person to die than say get a bovine graft to live. Yet, one of the heads at PETA is diabetic. She actually uses insulin which if you didn't know is taken from animals. When asked about it, she said she needed it to further the interest of PETA.
Yeah they have heart indeed. And if you scroll up to the youtube link all the information I told you can be found in that video.

I normally don't respond to the same topic twice but your ignorance is what struck a chord with me. So I'm going to respond to every statement you made.
I am glad to see PETA making a response. People should treat animals with respect. Slaughtering animals is just a testament to man's brutality, indifference, and ignorance. (Yes, I am a vegetarian.)
First of all animals taste good. If you can't stomach eating the meat of something that was once living that's fine with me. If you can't stand the heat get out of the slaughterhouse.
You people think that animals don't feel pain or that their pain is not real but it actually is. Mocking PETA won't do you any good. The reason you mock them is because they have struck a chord within you, instilling a bit of guilt. Most people's response is, "I don't want to know where the meat came from." You should want to know, and if you had a heart, you'd care for the mistreatment of animals as well.
I have absolutely no guilt in knowing where my food comes from. I feel confident in saying I could watch a chicken be skinned and cooked and still eat chicken again. It's too bad you can't because you're really missing out on some good food.
Dogs, cats, goats, cows...You draw the line between dogs and cats and other mammals, why? It's all hypocrisy. Don't mock this organization for standing up against something that is quite frankly disgusting. Educate yourselves before you stand up and make a fool of yourself.
No. Educate yourself you ignorant prick. One of PETA's major ad campaigns compared animal cruelty to the Holocaust. They compared a tragic time in our world's history to a couple of fucking animals getting slapped and tasered. Sorry but animals are lesser beings than us. They are not self aware and do not think on the same level as most of us. Granted there are humans that really don't deserve the gift of life but to say animals are equal to us is really fucking absurd.
Here have fun with the link

Who cares about the goat. It's a goat. It's a thing, like a coffee mug. People eat goats. A goat can't be a victim of anything.
What I care about is the poor human beings who have to see gross crap so Sony can try and recuperate all the money they lost in R&D on the PS3 by selling PS2 games.

Funny breed, the SONY fanboy. A couple of days ago, when this story broke, I remember reading the comments then: "SONY wouldn't do that.", "The source of this story isn't reliable.", and so on. The fact is that this event did indeed happen, and SONY is solely responsible. Unfortunately, SONY's entire marketing team must have received their degrees from Cracker Jack boxes, because their PS3 North American marketing campaign, their PS3 European Marketing campaign, and now THIS shows they have little experience and apparently no class whatsoever. It is absolutely stunning to see a company like SONY fall so fast and furiously. Exploding battteries, computer viruses, a mediocre console, and incredibly bad marketing for the previously mentioned mediocre console. Now, they've managed to take one of their premo franchises, and taint it as well. Amazing.

Jason @ May 2nd 2007 2:15PM
Animals are not things and they are not here for our recreational enjoyment. Just take a step back and think about what you are saying. You are brainwashed thinking animals aren't aware of themselves. It's just blind religious fanaticism that makes you think like this because your religion tells you are the best thing since sliced bread. Others of you may want to seize upon various news stories you have heard about PETA, but the main point is cruelty to animals. Being a researcher myself, I can't say I agree with everything about PETA, but I'm not going to write them off because their main message, treat animals humanely, is 100% correct. Besides, we kill animals quite humanely in the lab. We aren't slaughtering them while they're still conscious.
David @ May 2nd 2007 1:20PM
PETA is a terrorist group that cares more about some already dead animals than living humans. PETA wants to free bees and cats and dogs. What bullshit is that. PETA also kills throusands of animals a year. PETA can go fuck themselves even more than Sony.

I'd like to also say that I love the Sony advertising firm. It's hilarious how this stuff pulls on all the heart-strings of the overly sensitive sheople, who themselves take no part in any activism except bitching and whining. I look forward to their next controversial ad and all the delicious tears of the mass tool.
The Destroyer @ May 2nd 2007 6:49PM
@Jason
First of all I'm am an athiest and as such don't believe in what you said. But I do believe that I'm the best thing since sliced bread because I am. If you are a scientific researcher like you said then even you would be able to see that we ARE better than animals. Look around you and try and tell me a goat could have constructed a civilization. The message is what counts but people who base their beliefs around that message are the ones who don't see the whole picture and think about one topic that on the whole is laughable at best. The "good" people at PETA could be doing so fucking much to benifit humans instead of animals it's not even funny. I suppose I am against animals being tortured and slaughtered as opposed to being slaughtered straight out. But damnit I'm still going to eat meat. I'm not going to stop just because the meat industry is doing something you consider a travesty.
