Steam sucks, PERIOD!
Quakeulf @ May 2nd 2007 10:23PM
I agree that Steam sucks, but I've been longing to play The Longest Journey for years now.

Dreamfall blows hard. Nuff said.
Piemaster @ May 2nd 2007 11:45PM
@3- Ah, yes, the internet. A place where any idiot can express their opinion. If you don't like the game, don't read the article, and don't comment on it. It's that simple.

Correction, Dreamfall does bow hard. TLJ, on the other hand, is great.

Both games are great. Not just kinda good - really terrific. In different ways.
TLJ is a traditional adventure game, but done very well. Dreamfall is closer to an interactive movie and has one of the strongest storylines that there's ever been in gaming.
Most of the dumping on Dreamfall (note the well-reasoned criticism in the tread above) centers around the ending that some people feel is less than satisfactory. It certainly does leave a lot of questions unanswered, but the game covers the main character's involvement from beginning to end.
At any rate, I'd give both games a subjective, "In my opinion, they're really great." And a recommendation for anyone reading this to decide for themselves.

Does anybody know whether this will have the games on DVD, rather than CD? I tried to look that up, but wasn't able to affirm.
If I remember correctly, The Longest Journey was 4 discs, and Dreamfall was...7 discs?
They're great games. However, they do need one disc to rule them all.

I loved both greatly. I will say that I'm surprised that Dreamfall seems to have done well - it's essentially just a 20 hour interactive movie, the gameplay is very light (and it was intended to be so). It's literally supposed to be a game you can kind of go through at a decent clip and take all the story in. I love it. Many will not.

I thought the whole idea of online distribution through software like Steam was that it removed the middleman and thus reduced the cost. How come it's $5 for the online version ?
Sara @ May 3rd 2007 6:26AM
Rascal,
Shhh...logic has no place here. :P
I'll have to agree with you. I would much prefer to pay $5 more for the retail version, than the Steam version. Not vice versa. The problem with online distribution is lack of support, and lack of portability. Both of these problems are something that can be overcome by reduced pricing, but making it more is somewhat insane (although customers will buy it, since they view it as more convenient...yeesh)
Not only that, but I'll get the soundtrack with the retail purchase. C'mon Steam, get with it. ^^

TLJ was a game built around a great way of telling a story, but the story sucked and only a few characters were interesting - not including the main character. I hope they hire professional voice actors and writers for the episodic content, because the franchise has a lot of interesting backstory and some beautiful environments.
Slaziman @ May 3rd 2007 7:53AM
It's funny, the hooded guy looks exactly like a Dervish from Guild Wars >Nightfall
Saneless @ May 3rd 2007 10:23AM
If I'm reading this correctly... it actually costs $5 MORE to have it on Steam? The only steam I'll be seeing is the one rising from the turd on a cold morning. What's the point of a soft copy for more money?
t_m @ May 3rd 2007 10:32AM
well.. TLG is going for lots on ebay.. so thats a reasonable deal. Except dreamfall kinda sucks.
WHY is the steam game MORE EXPENSIVE than the one involving a box and shipping costs????
Infact, why are old games so expensive on steam?? There are a number of ancient games on there that i missed the first time and wouldn't mind trying out.. but they are all about 5 times more than you can pick them up for used in stores..
Bryan @ May 3rd 2007 10:42AM
MTV award-nominated? Sign my happy-ass up!
Satertek @ May 3rd 2007 5:25PM
Joystiq: It isn't $5 more on Steam, its $5 LESS. It's currently $19.95 inluding the 20% off, and will be $24.95 afterwards.
Everyone stop your Steam hating and go buy the game now.

Dreamfall is a wonderful game. The story is involving, the characters have depth, and the music score is beautiful. Maybe people were expecting something with more action, rather than point and click, but these adventure games can still be highly stimulating. Good to know some companies are still favoring a solid story above all else.
