Not content with ATI resting atop the DirectX 10 throne when their compliant cards come out this month, NVIDIA is showing off the new speed king, trumping their very own GeForce 8800 GTX, the current speed king. Behold: the GeForce 8800 Ultra! Rocking 768MB of video memory, and performing between 10 to 15% faster (on average) than the 8800 GTX, we don't even want to know what one of these overclocked beasts is going to cost when they hit retailers worldwide by May 15th. Oh, $829 and higher? And they're SLI compatible? Well, if Lost Planet at 2560X1600 is that important to you, we won't stand in your way.
[Update: The reviews have not been kind. Anandtech says, "The NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Ultra is an utter waste of money," while HardOCP says, "there [is] absolutely no reason to buy an 8800 Ultra over an 8800 GTX at this time." Ouch! Thanks for the links, guys.]

as someone who has an 8800gtx and a monitor that runs at 2560x1600 chances are lost planet will run just fine at that resolution with just a GTX :)

Man... What I wouldn't do to win the lottery.
Those things are HUGE!
Oh and my business uses those cards for graphic and video design. Not SLI though.

So, is there a difference between buying an overclocked GTX versus buying this?

I have to buy pretty powerful cards to do my job. But SLi is as far as I go and it's always a few numbers behind so I gets da heavy discount. Being able to play games at decent framerates just happens to be a perk.

Noo i better wait for the ATI HD 2900 XTX Video and sound physic card for around $600.00 compare to the $800.00 on the ultra.....

You could probably render a Hollywood movie in real-time with a pair of those!

When reputable hardware sites like AnandTech and HardOCP are saying things like "utter waste of money" and "there absolutely no reason to buy an 8800 Ultra over an 8800 GTX at this time," it's hard to see the justification of a headline like "Hail to the King."

There are freaking kids starving all over the world, people are living in poverty thanks to the imperialistic dictators running this country and an american big business wants you to waste money on crap like this? Who the hell needs this? How much development and research money that coulda been donated to some good causes was wasted in devleopment of this thing that all of 5 people will buy? No wonder this world is so screwed up.

@11.
The ATI card has one fatal flaw, its made by ATI. I stopped using ATI products after a driver fail in the All-in-wonder TV tuner as well as a driver issue that made my x1950 pro blow its on board memory.
A faster card at a lower price is great, but their terrible driver support as well as their warranty that pretty much voids itself no matter what you do adds up to a huge pile of crap.
If I ever use an ATI product again I will use 3rd party drivers. It was incredibly infuriating to have the ATI drivers fail, blow my card, then find out that there was no way that they would help me replace it.

Exactly.
"11. Nvidia 8800 ULTRA= waste of money
ATI HD 2900 XTX= Better deal"
While typically I prefer ATI GPUs over NVidia products, I should note that the XTX is outperformed by the GTX by a huge margin at least according to Dailytech's benchmarks.

Thanks Steve,
Perhaps you could spend one afternoon each week doing charity work instead of playing videogames? Nah.

@14 Steve
I go to this site because I give a damn about games, and tech in general. I don't give a damn about the thousands dying of starvation, aids, and other mass killers. And I don't give a damn about the imperialistic governments suppressing myself and the other poor souls who are suffering.
I care about dual SLI right now. You sir, need to find the "How can you just sit there when there is mass suffering all around you!" blog...not Joystiq. Infact I'm sure you could easily sell your computer and sponsor a lot of starving african babies. *cough, cough-HYPOCRITE, cough*

The 8800 will be the choice card come Crysis time if Nvidia doesn't release any other 8 series cards by the end of the year.
As far as playing it at 2560x1600 (whatever nvidia called it, extreme hd?), not so much, as my 1080p monitor only goes to 1900x1200 :|
Playing Crysis at 1900x1200 is my goal :D

It suprises me that somewhere like Anandtech isn't wise to the business reasons for a part like the GF8800 Ultra.
Similar products mentioned in the review (the intel Xtreme cpus etc) are the same.
Nvidia is taking a leaf out of intel's book which has prooved to be VERY succesful.
What is it?
Simple. They NEVER expect those high end parts to actually SELL. They release "xtreme" or "megaultra" editions that are ridculously expensive while the speeds are easily matchable in the lower parts with overclocking merely to point out what great value those lower end parts are.
In other words the xtreme CPUs and this Ultra GPU exist to temp buyers to buy a normal Core2 or a normal GF8 and overclock them, it's psychology at work. When people think "oooh I can buy a £250 CPU and overclock it to beat their £800 cpu" (or the same with a GPU) then the sale is much more tempting and is closed a lot quicker.
So, it's not suprise at all to see this "new" gpu overpriced and underperforming because it's an advertsing/business gimmick to cause a mass of people to rush out and buy a regular GF8 thinking how much of a "bargain" it is.
If noone else can see this apart from me I feel honoured for being so damn astute.
Ergo a C2D E6600 Cpu and a regular 8800GTX are the real deal and neither Intel nor Nvidia are stupid enough to be fully aware of their high-end pricing strategy. Makes perfect sense in business.
If the Ultra had been much closer priced to the regular 8800 they would haven't had the effect they wanted. I mean how many people have read these reviews or seen the prices of the ultra and not thought "hang on, I was waiting for new cards but now I will DEFINITELY go out and by a GTX8800 now and overclock to beat that", it makes you feel like you are getting a bargain!
