Chalkboard fighters return with stop-motion video
A couple of years ago, a group of students released a set of images depicting a Street Fighter/Mortal Kombat-esque fight sequence in front of a chalkboard. Now the team has released a stop-motion video utilizing over 3,000 photos and several hours of post-production effects. No chalk this time around, but the video game-meets-Dragonball Z-meets-real life theme is all there. Check out the video after the break.

Why do all YouTube videos have to be loaded with crap metal music that sounds like you're in a freakin metal shop with screeching pigs.

Thats what metal is.
lupos @ May 3rd 2007 10:23AM
This is kind of entertaining but i was really expecting them to have actually drawn on the chalk board and not just added stuff in afterwards. None of the white lines are actually chalk :/
hoop @ May 3rd 2007 10:17AM
Not to be too negative -- they obviously put in a lot of time and effort into making the technically impressive video -- but does anybody else think that the simple pictures were a whole lot cooler?
norp @ May 3rd 2007 10:19AM
I wouldn't really call Crystal Method metal. If you call them metal you would have to do the same for Prodigy.
I was also hoping it would be entirely drawn stop motion on the chalkboard, that was just postprocessing done in photoshop.
If you want some awesome stop motion stuff have a look at Don Hertzfeldt (not game related!)

That was freaking great!

My friend did a similar thing except with live action (why do stop motion?) Watch this and tell me it doesn't rock (the beginning is more a play on that crappy romeo movie, the end is more DBZ/MKII ish)

They aren't drawing on the chalkboard for each frame though, it's a slightly deceiving video. More like they are using it like a green screen so they can overlay their mspaint effects over and behind the characters with it looking okay.
zwarrior @ May 3rd 2007 10:40AM
What's reggie Fils-aime doing there?
The video would have been cooler if they had put the effort of drawing on the chalkboard
Poisoned Al @ May 3rd 2007 10:41AM
As an animator, I wasn't impressed.
jay @ May 3rd 2007 10:41AM
My god that was terrible. The first was much better.
Jonathan Tran - that doesn't "rock".
Booxatron @ May 3rd 2007 10:50AM
Those guys better be careful...if JT gets a hold of this they'll start banning chalk in America's schools...

Goddamnit, I thought it swallowed my first comment. Oh well:

I have to admit, I don't really see why they bothered making it stop motion when they only went and drew on the images instead of on the chalkboard. I would have been far more impressed if they had actually used the chalk, even if smudges were left from erasing each time.
smg @ May 3rd 2007 11:12AM
The Crystal Method isn't metal FYI. Look to myspace if you want to see what real bad metal sounds like.
Felnor @ May 3rd 2007 11:19AM
Wow,
That could have been done so much better.
If anyone is looking to do the same, please please use a Tripod. Non-Tripod videos give me a headache just like this one did.

That music is NOT metal.
Don't insult metal.
The Gagaman @ May 3rd 2007 1:07PM
Well that was disappointing. Thy didn't even draw the animated stuff on the actual chalk board, instead opting out with flash animation placed over the top of the footage. Takes away the whole point of them moving in stop motion.
Kye @ May 3rd 2007 12:28PM
Booxatron #13... and errr #4.
Your comment is todays best (so far)
Zack Turner @ May 3rd 2007 12:32PM
=\ This is pretty terrible, they don't even use chalk it's all after effects. It's pretty lame.
waLLy @ May 3rd 2007 12:43PM
stupid. what made the concept so clever in the first place was that they used **only** chalk. the effects ruin it.
navstar @ May 3rd 2007 8:38PM
A) TRIPOD!!!
B) Oh, I don't know -- how abouts ACTUALLY DRAWING ON THE CHALK BOARD?! (what's the point of not drawing on the chalk board??!!¿¿¿¡¡¡¡)
C) MORE THAN 2 FPS, please!
Shea @ May 3rd 2007 3:58PM
Anyone hating on these dudes is a shit head. "As an animator I wasn't impressed." Fuck you buddy. as an internet user, I think your handle Poisoned Al is a piece of shit.
Aaron @ May 3rd 2007 5:14PM
yeah...that was really dumb, should have just stuck to the chalk, or not done stop-motion.
Sadistic Freek @ May 3rd 2007 5:34PM

Haha, you must be daft... or musically inept. Crystal Method metal? No. Not even Filter is considered metal (the singer in that version of Trip Like I Do is from Filter). Go back to watching your MTV and shut up 'till you know what music is... or at least what metal is.
ski @ May 4th 2007 10:37AM
How is this A-OK even though it depicts violence _in_ a school while the poor CS map guy gets suspended? Quadruple standards!?! I think so.
Feel free to congecture about the remaining two standards.
Lam @ May 3rd 2007 7:02PM
What a pointless use of stop motion... they could have just filmed it, and then taken out half the frames. There was no jumping or anything that required still frames. Utterly retarded.
