PSone titles now working on PlayStation 3 and PSP

Well, it's May and Sony has announced that the PSone format software available from the PlayStation Store will now be operable on both the PS3 and PSP systems. If you've already purchased any titles, you'll be able to re-download them to your PS3 at no additional charge. We'll give our copy of Crash Bandicoot a spin on the PS3 later today and report back on how it goes. Now, if we could only skip the PS3 entirely and download straight to the PSP ...
Compatible titles include:
- 2Xtreme
- Crash Bandicoot
- Destruction Derby
- Jet Moto
- Jumping Flash
- MediEvil
- Rally Cross
- Syphon Filter
- Tekken 2
- WipeOut

My thoughts exactly. My PSP is oh so wanting of this ... uh ... in a legal way without a custom firmware :)

out of curiosity, why use the term PSone instead of PSX or even PS1?
PSOne was a revamped PSX. It ran PSX titles. Although with the PS2 and PS3 out I understand referring to the original as PS1, why waste letters and specifically call out one flavor of the first playstation?
again, just curious...

some of the games are not in production anymore. so you really can't get them anywhere else.
as for PSP, well, apparently! it's legally to rip your OWN PS1 games to PSP. ;)

Wow two newer systems get to play old ugly games from the past, gee thats wonderful news...
Shit I guess I'll wait till PS5 to play PS3 games...

Prepare for one hell of a "the fuck?" kind of ride.
PSX was the original three code designation given to retailers for the Playstation. Much like GCN is Gamecube or GBA is Gameboy Advance. This was all fine and dandy until PSOne hit the market and Sony would later reuse PSX for a different console, the true father of the tech heavy PS3. The PSX hit Japan as a PS2, DVD-R, and Tivo style contraption, forever banning PSOne games from being referred to as PSX games for fear of consumer confusion.

Although I wish I had a copy of intelligent cube...

sheppy, I'm assuming he knew that. His question is, I'm assuming, more along the lines of "why use PS2 and PS3, and use PSOne instead of PS1?".
Playstation or PS1 can be easily understood as an original Playstation game, whereas the term PSOne can bring up the image of the PSOne hardware redesign, instead of the software for that generation.
And wasn't AGB the "code" for the GameBoy Advance?
JodyAnthony @ May 3rd 2007 2:36PM
and everything about DS uses 'NTR' and everything about Wii uses 'RVL'
does it really matter?

The reason I find this cool is the games are only $6. You aren't paying $60 to play an old game.
Jake @ May 3rd 2007 2:49PM
Hoffer,
Where do you pay $60 to play an old game?

You don't HAVE to take advantage of this. There are people who haven't bought a single VC game. As for playing PS3 games, hell, you're welcome to do that now.
Why just last night, a friend and I double teamed Char Aznoble in the third mission of Amuro's story arc in Gundam Musuo. Fun was had by us both. Amazing, a PS3 game played in an actual PS3 console...
Oh wait, I forgot your point...

nice.

Then I guess to you, what is the point of Virtual Console, since it's a new system that plays old "ugly" games. What about X-Box live arcade playing old "ugly" games. Seriously your cinicism is clearly laid down in fanboyism.

I wonder if someday Sony will release a PS3 app that allows us to rip PS1 games directly from a disc. I know, its doubtful, but just imagine it. Maybe if enough positive thoughts are focused on it, it will happen!
Something similar to this? http://www.globalorgasm.org/
Don't worry, It is fairly work safe.
BPM @ May 3rd 2007 3:45PM
Frankly, I use just "PS" to refer to the first PlayStation...
Karen @ May 3rd 2007 4:10PM
Are the PS1 games 4:3? Do they stretch them to fit the PSP screen or are they using just the middle of the PSP screen? How does look?
sheppy @ May 3rd 2007 4:20PM
"Are the PS1 games 4:3? Do they stretch them to fit the PSP screen or are they using just the middle of the PSP screen? How does look?"
They have three modes. Original which doesn't stretch any pixels, but it's small and centered. Fill keeps aspect ratio but stretches to fit the top and bottom of the screen. And then full just warps and fills the screen.

With all this talk of PSOne, PS1, and PSX has nobody noticed there is no X in the word PLAYSTATION? Is there some law that says there must be 3 letters? Is that why GameCube is referred to as GCN? Seriously, there are some Dee Dee Dee's out there, and they've got influence.
Unfortunately the DDD's have made it so you need to own a PS3 to play PS1 games on your PSP.

I don't think its fanboyism as much as its ignorance.
CNash @ May 3rd 2007 6:28PM
Just to confirm, using custom firmware and ripping your own PS1 ISOs to play on it is indeed legal. I've been enjoying the delights of handheld Final Fantasy VII for the past few months.

Sony's first Playstation was only codenamed PSX during development. When it was released it was the Playstation or PS. Only people who didn't know what they were talking about continued to call it the PSX - which was like people still calling the N64 'Dolphin' or the Dreamcast 'Katana' - silly but not without reason.
When Sony released the PSX people (and many publications that should have known better in the first place) were more or less forced to call the Playstation by its actual abbreviation to avoid confusion.

@22 I see you have no problem showing yours..
Sorry if I don't get all excited about playing old games, ive either already played to death or never had any interest in playing when they were new. If thats what floats your boat, more power to you...
