Clements is in Sugar Land, TX (Tom DeLay FTL). Which is in Fort Bend County.

Maybe race was a reason why the school officials are acting the way they are, maybe not. But I seriously doubt race had anything to do with the police searching his home (which his parents consented to), and bringing him in for questioning.
It's a matter of public safety, regardless of race.

And bgdc, Clements has a very large asian population. Almost half of my graduating class (about 950 students c/o 01) was of asian descent. I know that is still the case, because my little brother goes to clements as well. It is a pretty well diversified school, located in the upper middle class suburbia.

Don't you find it ironic that you are accusing the entire state of texas of being racist, while stereotyping the entire state?
It's like you're being racist against texans because you think they're racist.

That's like, double racism or something.

manekiNeko, you're right, and you've completely missed the point. If this was a nonscary game like the one's you've mentioned, then this kid wouldn't have had the treatment he did. However, that doesn't make the treatment he received right.
Basically, you're saying that since people are freaking out about anything CS related, the general public has lost the right to play that game and create mods for it. like others have said in this thread- playing CS is not a crime. Making maps of real world places in that game is not a crime. Your attitude accepts that those activities are in some way criminal and deserve to be punished. That's insane.

If we could pull off another HD-DVD key type uprising, I'm sure we could get people to finally take a good hard look at what's going on here and finally educate themselves about the games they're coming down hard on, and then less stupid mistakes like this one will occur.

Satan Is My Motor, you're not the only one who made parallels to Columbine.

@Lord Chako,

Yeah, people tend to forget that is a LARGE fucking state and just because regions are racists, doesn't make the entire state. Seriously, Illinois has areas like Chicago that are diverse and fine with it and then we have areas like small ass hick towns where any visiting black people are "trouble makin vagrants" If fact, when a state as small as Washington DC doesn't have a unified stereotype to apply to it's entire landmass.

It's stupid how this article is trying to make it seem as though video games are being singled out. Really, it's people are up each others asses now about terrorism, so any kind of suspicious activity like mapping a building will get people in a frenzy. It's stupid, but it's not really about video games. You could map the school with all the other things mentioned in the article and still get this kind of shit. A singular photo of one part or the outside of the school is a lot different than a detailed walkthrough of the whole building.

Sheppy -

Yeah, I just noticed the other one, saying they'd played a map of that school. Nonetheless, in reading over my post, I noticed that I only said they immortalized the phenomenon, without saying what that phenomenon was, so I could have been taken as meaning the phenomenon of making maps of schools (as opposed to school shootings). Anyway, it doesn't matter, I just like to be clear on my behalf because I can't afford a good lawyer like Jack Thompson to defend me. ;-)

The whole creation of the map by Paul was misguided! This horrible act ranks up there with drawing skulls on your binder and making fun on classmates on bathroom walls. HANG HIM!

Do you really NEED a map of your school if you plan to waltz in there guns a blazing? I knew my high school quite well and I sure would not have needed a map. The school he attends is a major part of his life so why wouldn't he map it out in a game if that's his thing? God this country is just eaten up with the fear G. W. Bush is cramming down our throats.

horngreen - I'm sure you like to think that you are smart by naming a politician, but when you use the fear that others are using fear to fearmonger, you are, in fact, fearmongering yourself.

For those wondering how old the map is... anyone who has made maps for games like MoH:AA, CoD & Counterstrike will tell you that it takes anywhere from 20 hours (for the most basic of map) to a few hundred hours to make a quality map.

Judging by the screenshots, Hwang's map was quality... he obviously started making it long before the VT massacre happened.

So when I play the Unreal Tournament map in the mushroom kingdom, I could be arrested for terroristic threats against Mario and Luigi? Come on now.

In all honesty, if I were a parent, and I saw my kid shooting people in his school (on a video game) I'd definitely give it a second look. What went wrong here is that some kids out there thought it was ok to have (fictional) gun battles inside their school. Think what you will, but it takes a certain type of person to think "Hmm, wouldn't it be cool if I could run around these halls with guns and a knife, and shoot at people who also had guns and knives?" So while it could be said that the school made a mistake, you've got to atleast give some of the blame to the kid that made the map.

Remember the guy that made the map of the Bestbuy he worked in (for CS) and got fired? This is the same principle, except this kid didn't get fired, he will still get a diploma, and probably some money from the lawsuit.

It's hard to cry this kid a river. And what ever became of that Bestbuy map making guy?

Considering recent events, how tasteful is it to create a map of your high school for people to shoot on?

This story makes me want to puke. This is really disgusting. I thought americans had a better sense of what freedom means. On what basis could they possibly punish him? Depicting his school? This is empirical and arbitrary. This is just wrong.

Disgusting.

I would love to see a database of maps based on schools around the country created, if only to show the absurdity of preventative punishments for their creators based on the irrational fear of their use as "murder simulators".

even the investigation by the police is only justified in the twisted, fear-redden society we now live in. 10 years ago it would have been seen as an insane over-reaction by everyone. the fact it isn't is a sad indictment of the fact that there is no longer a price for freedom that anyone is willing to pay.

Is there anyone over the age of 20 who DIDN'T used to play games of Doom on maps of their highschool or university? If so please raise your hand... *whistles*... didn't think so...

I always thought about doing this kind of stuff, and frankly I'm surprised that there's anybody out there who hasn't. I mean, I think it's probably pretty normal adolescent-kid stuff to read a Tom Clancy book (or see a movie, or play a game, or whatever) and think about how it would be to rescue people in a familiar environment (at home, at school, at work), either as a protagonist from whatever you just saw/read/etc. (Ding Chavez FTW!), or as an "unlikely" hero, like Bruce Willis in Die Hard. I think it's a normal, healthy fantasy for young boys to have to imagine "riding to the rescue" and "taking out the bad guys", and if the game lets you imagine that in a more formal way, great!

100% of the problem here comes from old people who don't remember what it's like to be a young male, or don't want young males to act like young males.

his name is peter (not paul..i don't know why people changed his name). He started making the map when he was a freshmen and he released the map 2 months before the V.Tech shooting, but got arrested 1 day after the shooting. I downloaded the map b4 the shootings and since the map is so big (only the commons + courtyard, not the whole school) the fps is goes down and it's very hard to play in there.

Release of the map just happens to published at the wrong time with bad luck, with regard to the VT massacre. If the incident at VT had not happened, nobody would've reported this cuz' there are thousands of FPS maps that are built based on their real life locations but they are not selected to be a big hit on news but this. Perhaps the person who reported about this CS map even knows Paul that he's Asian. But on top of that, CS is the most played FPS game online and it's so popular that anything related to the game is often widely spreaded. Due to its realistic nature aspects of the game, it is more likely to grab people's attentions and to be abused as a practice simulation. Imagine it was simply a dead FPS game, like Quake, nobody would be so busy talking about it. Ultimately, this is all the fault of the corrupted American society. Before 911, gun-related crimes have always been around. After 911, people even have to live in fear of assuming certain people around to be potential terrorists.

CT's ftw.

Only in America can something like this get blown so much out of proportion.

I agree, the Police had an obligation to follow through the threat, and they acted correctly in not pressing charges.

The school, I feel, should adopt the same view and offer an apology AND revoke any punishment given as the young man was NOT in breach of ANY law at all!
