[UPDATE: this appears to be system wide across Xbox Live with other games being affected as well. As several people have pointed out, it could be tied to the imminent Dashboard update. We've contacted Microsoft for some answers.]
This is one of those things we experienced firsthand, and thought "Gee, we wonder if people are talking about this on the internet." We were right. Ah yes, the internet, where everyone (including us) turns to when there's a problem with anything. If you have a doctor who looks up your ailments on Wikipedia, you might want a second opinion.
Anyhow, we downloaded the new Gears of War map pack yesterday, and jumped into multiplayer to get some game on. However, every time we searched for games, usually only one or two would show up. What the heck? Normally you'll have tons of games listed, so there must be something going on. We've emailed Epic for an answer, but until then we remain frag-inhibited. The one or two matches that do show up play fine, but we want some options to choose from.

#47 - Uh, Microsoft most definitely does NOT own Epic. That would make the whole free maps vs. not free maps argument pretty dumb if it was true.

#48 my mistake, microsoft only publishes epics games, which is kinda the same thing when releasing the new content because the publisher has the overall say on when, where, and for how much they publish epics material.
my point still stands.

48. microsoft owns live(which is the only way that epic can get the maps to the masses) which means microsoft get the final say on what gets onto the marketplace

Last night I was playing and all of a sudden there were about a dozen games shown in the list again. I don't know if this happened to anyone else.

i don't think the people who didn't download the maps realize that the matchmaking and game select are not different. It's as simple as this: You have the maps, those games show up; you don't have the new maps, those games don't show up.
Anyone who has the new maps should be able to see all the games available, which means i shouldn't be only seeing 2-4 games.
it was wierd when this happened to me, because it was the middle of friday night and i started the night getting a page worth of games, then it just dropped exponentially every game i played.

Well, I was playing Gears all night, last night. Not a single problem finding matches. I played for probably... 6 hours, no problems. I had to go through about 3 pages of matches to find the map I wanted to play.
And doesn't Live try to match you up with people in your group(Pro, Underground, Recreation) and area? So, if there are people looking for matches in your area, but they're Pro, while you're Recreation you probably won't find the Pros. It makes sense, why should someone looking to have a friendly game be matched with someone looking for a challenge and might be overly aggressive?

#60 "Honestly Im happy that this happened. These maps should be free. Im glad I didnt buy them."
So, beacause you were too cheap to buy the maps, you're gonna be spiteful towards the people who did actually pay for them?
Real nice.

yup, same thing has been happening with GRAW2. Curiously enough, both GRAW2 and GEARS have downloaded map content.
My hunch is the problem has something to do with matchmaking in each game recognizing if each gamer has the downloaded content or not.
But, then again - I'm just a robot. ;)

i couldn't say.. right after i downloaded them, my 360 kept freezing. I though it was only on those maps, but a day later started to happen on everything else aswell. It was fine until i downloaded the maps. Some say its coincidence..hard to tell.

I think loads of people are having a disk unplayable error that i've having that prevents you from even starting either GOW or GRAW 2

ha funny you should mention doctors looking up your ailment on wikipedia. I'm in med school and every one of my classmates uses it fairly often to learn stuff. That anecdotal story your grammy told you about her gout that you inevitably edited into wiki might somehow come up again as a fact your doc is telling you! It's the wave of the future, and a lot more easy to understand than all those pesky medical books!
