Aberu, read my post again. Notice I stated that one of the Cell cores is PowerPC based. The heavy computing in Folding isn't being performed on the PowerPC core, it's being performed on the 7 SPEs.

Umm who gives a shit. When I'm not using my machine I turn it off because oh I don't know...I have an electricity bill to pay each month.

aberu, u r an idiot...

"Last I checked the PS3 was capable of over 2 trillion calculations per second. No home computer I know of can do that yet. Research plz kthx."

2 teraflops of computing power is the biggest sony lie i've ever heard... the PS3's cell has a theoretical computing power of 218 GFLOPS, leaving a balance of about 1.8 TFLOPS on the rest of the system. ask anyone from the computer industry, that none of G8x based nVidia GPU (in which the RSX is based on) has ever reach that floating point figure, let alone with the latest GPU (geforce 8800 series for example).

dont act like you know smartass... lots of us here are from the computing field...

on positive note, the cell is really good at crunching huge calculations... that's why it performed very well on folding@home..

What's the point of running this Folding Garbage on your Console anyway? Really, nothing better to do? I'm to busy Playing Games and watching TV and Movies, and DVDs and HD DVD's on my 360, that I wouldn't have time to run folding. Why also leave the console on costing me MONEY in electricity just to run the program? It's LAME. I can care less about it. Let the PS3 users keep using it, what else do they have to do? If it makes them feel better spending $600+ on their console to do some folding, great. There's so many great games on the 360 now to play, there's no time for B.S. such as FOLDING.

Um, from what we know about the Cell...it's made for these types of general calculations, where the Xenon was designed with gaming calculations in mind.

"You can really tell which console was rushed out. The PS3 is just really solidly reliable "

One thing to also consider is that the PS3's hardware may not have been rushed, but the horrible software obviously was (talking about the OS). However, the OS is fixable with updates, where hardware is not.

I can't stand using my PS3 for anything but gaming (even that is questionable until some higher profile titles come out)...even doing an update is a PITA compared to the 360. Make sure you always have a USB cable around...

The PS3 may be able to do great things one day...but Microsoft is already a step ahead of them. If it takes as long to get their "potential" as the PS2 did, then we'll already be on the next Xbox by the time the PS3 shows its supposed "power".

Just remember...the PS2 has some impressive things on it's wimpily-specked hardware. But if the same effort were put on the original Xbox, it would have been outshined in a second. Instead, it got crappy PS2 ports.

I think Sony and Microsoft have changed places. MS has RRoD, where Sony had DRE last time. MS has more (current) games, where last time Sony did. MS has the "lesser" powered console this time, where last time Sony did. Sony now gets crappy ports, where last time MS did.

Strange, eh?

There are 2 simple reasons why you will never see Folding@Home on the 360:

1/Microsoft doesn't want people to be able to directly compare the 360 CPU and the PS3 CPU. "hang on, why is the PS3 folding the same stuff 10 times quicker than the 360..."

2/The 360 will simply crumble into a pile of melted plastic, if left to fold for any length of time. Hell it can't actually handle Guitar Hero II without getting red rings fo death, imagine how many failed units would result from Folding@Home calculations...

"If PS3's cell were such a miracle of modern computing, where are they besides a few university science project systems. "

IBM is selling servers with Cell. Mercury is selling medical imaging systems with Cell. Toshiba is going to sell Cell based computers soon.

http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/products/

" Gaming is not an embarrassingly parallel problem"

Actually it is. All the tasks in a game run parallel. Physics and animation, AI, Audio, geometry (sending the 3D models to the GPU to render), multiplayer. These all run parralel

"Making a game parallel enough to actually use the Cell to the point of catching back up to the 360, much less surpassing it (which is, of course, technically feasible) is a software engineering nightmare."

And yet games like Resistance and Lair do it extremely well

" the Xbox 360 is doing what it is supposed to do which is function as a video game system "

And a DVD player, a Windows Media Center Extender, a video marketplace downloader. 360 and Wii have their non-gaming functions too jackass

"Um, from what we know about the Cell...it's made for these types of general calculations, where the Xenon was designed with gaming calculations in mind."

Complete garbage.
360s processor is 3, dual threaded PPC cores
PS3s processor is 1, dual threaded PPC core, and 7 single threaded SPE cores. These SPE cores are specialized to handle lots of data, really fast. And are especially adept at handling certain tasks like physics/animation, audio and video processing.

Cell is more gaming oriented than 360's processor.
360's is more general purpose.

"When running linix on my 1.5 ghz pc its over 2 times as fast as the ps3 when benchmarked"

You moron. All PS3 benchmarks done so far only
used the PPC core, and none of the SPUs. You should've actually read the benchmarks not just the end result.

I was thinking about how ill-suited the 360 would be to Folding the other day...I can leave my PS3 on for twelve hours straight Folding with no problem. Bet if you left a 360 on that long you'd get the Red Rings of Milkage...erm...Death.

i'm leaving my comments based only on the Graphics Unit..
I would say that although microsoft is trying to promote their console
XBOX 360 stating that it's got a GPU of unified architecture as ATI's they won't
either beat PS3 in the overall technical performance. Well Sony shouldn't have
solely relied on nvidia for the GPU code named RSX..cos under nvidia GPU,
games releasing after few years will be in need of increased pixel
to vertex shader units although SPE units in CORE cell of PS3 is much anticipated as while to perform..nvidia have
currently released Geforce 8800 of pixel 4 shader category for PC to bring games like DOOM 3 executed
silly. AND note that the RSX of PS3 is just real world approximation of already well selling card like the Geforce 7900
series which has already begun sinking into medium level PC graphics!! on the whole 360 with its typical ATI assembly GPU and XENON CPU will continue to perform
for some time around while OPEN GL and CG language for PS3's GPU will route shorcuts!!!

so after comparing Screenshots of NFS CARBON...360 shows more of real like lighting while on the other hand PS3 shows more of Textures.

So thumbs up maybe for 360 graphics rite now!!!

Some people find it hard to accept facts that are not to their likings, what they do instead is believe in a lie of their own creation....

wrong, but if it makes life easier for them, then let it be.
