Podcast Rodeo for May 6: Ear's Mud in Your Eye

The Hotspot: A story of tragedy, triumph and boredom on the Hotspot as a caller tells about working in an arcade while Billy Mitchell was trying to break the Pac-Man record. Long story short: A kid unplugs the machine, tragedy and hilarity ensue.
CAG Cast: It's co-host Wombat's 30th birthday, and Cheapy D celebrates by having an analyst (Michael Pachter, from Wedbush Morgan Securities) on the show, which is sort of like a stripper in a cake for nerds.
GFW Radio: Whiskey Nerd returns! If you have no idea what we're talking about, you should already be clicking.
Joystiq: And from the darkness arose a guest co-host with such subtle power to his voice, such incredible insight, such chemistry, the audio actually projects beams of pure, white light from whatever source it's being broadcast. You may have thought you knew what a podcast could mean to your life. Prepare for your new answer to be "everything." God bless you Justin McElroy. God bless you.
Major Nelson: William Schmitt of Activision comes on to talk about Spider-Man 3. Not brought up: His groundbreaking work on Michael Jordan: Chaos in the Windy City. In the Major's shownotes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayonaise, so you're listening at your own peril.
NoobToob: In this episode of the video/audio cast, we all realize that the game drought has gone too far when hosts Tobin Coziahr and Yuzo Watanabe have to host a show about Eets: Chowdown and SNK vs. Capcom Card Fighters DS. That's quite a bullet to take for us, guys. Did you ever know that you're my heroes?
OK, so that's all we've got cooking for this week. If you run a podcast and would like to get it in the Rodeo, send along a link to your latest episode with a brief description. If it isn't awful, you could be e-famous!

The Hotspot = Best podcast ever.
Matt @ May 6th 2007 9:27PM
Actually, 1up Yours is better in just about every way.
Banana Kid @ May 6th 2007 9:35PM
Except it's kind of not. The Hotspot is an entirely different kind of show, except for that they both do news.
And it was the Pac-Man record, not Donkey Kong. Do your research, Joystiq!

I like Legendary Thread and Retronauts better than any other podcast while we are on the subject of which we like best.

Thanks Banana Kid, I swear I had just listened to it five minutes prior. I think my mind was just filled with King of Kong madness.

Joystiq, keep this weekly update. I love podcasts and these on top of my usuals gives me about one a day to listen to. Thanks and keep it up.

i thought i was going to be the only one to notice the grados. them some bomb headphones, dude.
Dave @ May 6th 2007 11:28PM
Definitely RS2s. Note that they've got the plastic pieces to hold the barrels. The RS1 has a full metal band that goes all the way around.
Early production though, the wood's a deep color and they're using flats. Definitely more than 5-6 years old.
Wow, I've got a problem.
Justin McElroy @ May 6th 2007 11:59PM
Hey Dave,
I know it's the same dude. It's such a great pic we thought it would be fun to give him a new quote every week for the Rodeo. You guys who know what kind of headphones he's wearing are nerds ... but you're the kind of nerds that probably invented rockets back in the day, and I really love Velcro, so we're cool.

Most of the video game podcasts consist of them reading their news page and making jokes. Which is fine, they can be entertaining when you're stuck at a desk. For more insightful coverage, you've got to check out the gametheory podcast. They have some pretty good coverage and interviews. Recently they had a Phd on to talk about his work testing the relation of video game violence to aggression, but usually it's people from the industry. They talk intelligently (or at least their british accents make them sound intelligent), and they manage to steer clear of the more wacky and immature stuff. It tends to be more focused on the business side of things.
I liked the 1up podcast because they would often drop not-so-subtle hints of stuff that was still under NDA. Although Luke could be a bit irritating at times, he had a lot of good insight into the business side of thing, and he actually did a lot of good research beyond what the game companies fed them. Before he left I was hoping that he would do an business oriented podcast.

Dear Justin,
You've probably already realized that we've been to your home during the night and removed all traces of velcro from your life. Perhaps next time you'll be a little more careful, eh?
Love,
Yuzo @ May 7th 2007 6:47AM
Justin, you think last week's NooBTooB took a bullet for you with Eets and SNK? This week covers a trio of ultimate badness on the Wii: Heatseeker, Spider Man 3, and the absolute worst, Legend of the Dragon.
Feel our pain. Ep will be up on Thursday :).
