There is a story up on digg (one of the top ones) that shows some screenies of the spiderman game. According to them, and the review by places such as IGN etc, Spiderman 3 for the Wii is a generally horrible game. Bad graphics, bad gameplay, bad rush job in general. Unfortunately for Spidey fans, the PS3/Xbox 360 versions didn't fare any better. The Wii version got something like a 5 (out of 10) and the PS2 version got a 3. The Xbox 360/PS3 game got a 6. Everyone that went out and bought the game today is basically cursing the game's developer and wishing them a painful and immediate end. The game is that horrible, especially on the Wii

I'll definitely give this game a shot (although I've learned with Wii games it's best to rent before you buy...stupid Warioware). I liked the last Spider-Man game, and the movie was good (not great, but a lot better than I expected), so it's worth the $5 a month I pay for Gamefly to try it out.

This game is definitely one you should rent. The controls are horrible, graphics are horrible, AI is horrible, the list of things that the devs fucked up on is large to say the least. The game is basically a button masher, and the enemies (including the bosses) are a lesson in futility. It's funny, because all the national papers ran with the story "New Spider-Man game! Has Spiderman in title, must be amazing!" and my local paper was comparing the sales that SpiderMan 3 the Game would get, to Grand theft Auto or Halo 2. If that comes to pass, then alot more people that need be have been ripped off.

I can't make this any clearer; This game was rushed, it's not as good as Spiderman 2, but if you want to go web slinging for a good half hour around a (slightly) better looking New York, then by all means, RENT this game.

The game looks pretty lame. We've had enough spiderman in spiderman 1 & 2 to need a crappy sequel. The game needs originality and boosted graphics if it's gonna be good. I say Ultimate Spiderman 2 on wii, those graphics could turn out in wii's favor.

the movie was great i thought, i don't understand the bad reviews, it was barely different than the others.

I'm usually a pretty understanding person, but in this case... what the hell? Why is it game developers are giving us games for the Wii that looked worse than PS2 titles? Seriously gaming industry, just because consumers bought a Wii and put graphics second to gameplay does NOT mean we don't care what it looks like.

I'm sure the mechanics in this game are pretty fun, and I'm not usually a graphics hound... but this is getting out of hand. The Wii has at least twice the power of a GameCube, and yet the graphics that half of these 3rd party titles are showing off are beyond hideous. Again, some of us gamers may put gameplay first, but that's no excuse for short-changing us graphically.

Jesus Christ this game looks like complete ass.

Does anyone remember the "Broadway" CPU and "Hollywood" GPU nicknames? More fitting nicknames would have been "Skid Row" and "Ass Town" or something. Jesus Christ.

The Wii needs to stick to stylistic graphics. Trying to create realistic graphics just puts it in direct competition with Microsoft and Sony, and that is a battle the Wii will lose every single time. Wii specific controls be damned in this instance - even those as gimmicky as whirling around the remote - no amount of "immersion" through unique controls can make up for the asstastic graphical presentation here.

The buildings look like crap. The water looks terrible. Don't even get me started on the entire scene in the building.

How the Wii is still selling like hotcakes is truly beyond me. Wii Sports, Zelda and Wario were fun, and that's it. And the Zelda controls were tacked on. Now I just turn on my Wii to cast votes in the voting channel and that's it.

To return to the post at hand, this game looks like shit on the Wii, and no amount of "immersive" / gimmicky controls will make up for it. That is all. :)

If they wanted Venom in the movie, they should have started that story line in the last movie, when JJ's son was a more important character anyways. Venom's story is just such a long arch in the actual comic to throw it in as an extra storyline for a single movie.

I bought this on launch and got the last copy, which tells me the game must be selling well to begin with. I got this because I wanted a good
action/fighting game for the Wii, which is exactly what it is.I really don't see why everyone is so upset about the graphics and sound, they
are fine and don't interfere with the gameplay. I had a lot of fun just swinging around New York, climbing sky scrapers, and just touring the city. The game has some random tasks which are a bit repetitive, but overall the storyline is interesting and fun. The game makes excellent use of the Wiimote for web-swinging and fighting, which feels well integrated, and not added on, like some other games for the Wii. The voice acting is stale and repetitive, but doesn't bother me much. I have not seen the film yet, so I can't compare it to the movie's storyline. Overall, this game uses the Wiimote well, has acceptable graphics and sound, and most importantly, is fun to play.

@ #24:

You can try and blame the developers for "half-assing it" as an excuse for the shitty Wii graphics on this game, but you would be wrong.

The Wii version of Spider-Man 3 was in fact designed and developed separately from the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, i.e. developed with the Wii specifically in mind: http://wii.ign.com/articles/785/785713p1.html

And the game *still* turned out looking like some kind of funk I don't ever want to see again. The Wii's problem goes past simply not being able to produce the graphics the Xbox 360 and PS3 can; the Wii cannot produce realistic graphics, period. If it tries, it will always turn out like shit.

The Wii needs to stick to stylistic graphics, otherwise the crap on screen will override any sense of immersion the Wii's remote provides.

Blame the Wii's horsepower. Not the developers.

It is not because a game is developed with one system in mind, that there are no shared resources in the game. If someone could tell me that everything was build up from scratch, feel free to do so. But I don't think you should blame the graphical capabilities here.

Having seen the PS3 game intro, it looks like all versions of Spidey 3 are dog rough. Even in the first few seconds of it, buildings at the horizon are jiggling about as the level-of-detail fights with itself. The textures were mediocre, the models deep in uncanny valley and the motion capture seems to have been done be a troupe of hyperactive mimes. It's embarrassing - just another case of the license carrying a lousy game.

If you look at all three IGN reviews the Wii got a 5.7 where the other versions got a 6.0 that is a whopping difference of .3. What the hell does that even mean? If you read the text all three are broken in some way. My guess the games were rushed to make it out on the day the movie released.

I'll maybe rent it, but it'd be nice to see a spiderman game that doesn't stick so much to the movie license. The guy who did Spidey's voice on Marvel Ultimate Alliance was much better than McGuire, he sounds bored/stoned.

Game's ugly as heck, maybe the next one should go with a more stylized feel so that this kind of thing doesn't get in the way of enjoying the game.

problem is, there are loads of devs out there who are experts with the way the PS2/3 and xbox graphic hardware works.. but very few that are experts on the gamecube architecture. (the only 3rd party ones being Factor5.. and they aren't making wii games).

While the Wii will never match the PS3 or 360, it should be able to match anything the xbox could do, and probably exceed it. But like in the last generation, it'll probably get lazy ports of PS2 code..

That trailer made it look terrible.. (in terms of graphics, gameplay and acting. )
Not even bruce campbell could save it. (and he really should have been cut from the movie!)

Yes; the Wii can do realistic graphics (look at RE: Umbrella Chronicles, love or hate the concept it looks very good as it is).

There just haven't been any good examples to the contrary, sadly enough. The only way you can blame this on Wii's hardware is that if it were in the PS360 ballpark, devs would port from good-looking 360, instead of poor-looking PS2

"How the Wii is still selling like hotcakes is truly beyond me."

Well, it appears to be cheap (but it really isn't if you consider what you get) ) and the artificial "shortages" created by Nintendo keep up the hype. Also, Gamecube sold about 20 million so there are still lots of hardcore Nintendo fans out there who haven't been able to get one yet.

I'm sure the sales of Wii will suffer a massive slowdown in Europe and US in 12-18 months, but it will probably do well in Japan for years. Japanese gamers don't care about real games anymore, it's Brain/English/Whatever Training everwhere nowadays and Wii is a good platform for those games.

@ 38......I agree 100%. The Wii is selling because of price MOSTLY. Most people who play/own the Wii are under 16. How many 5-17 year olds do you know with 300-600 bucks in their pockets? Not many unless their parents are wealthly or they are tight-fisted as hell since most people in that age group spend all their money with 24 hrs. of getting it. If the Wii were 400 bucks the systems would be stacked to the hills at retailers like the PS3.

I'm 33, have owned a Wii since November 19, and think it is one kick-ass system. Wii Sports, Warioware, Zelda, Excite Truck, SSX Blur, all are the best games I've played this generation.

I also own a 360. I like the Wii's control and interface much better. The 360's graphics are nice, but not next-generation nice. At least the Wii got the next-gen part right by introducing a totally new control scheme.

As for Spider-Man 3, I'm not surprised. The first Spider-Man game sucked, the second one was a little better but only 5% better, and this one was rushed out on a crappy engine. What's most fascinating is watching the fall of the giants: Sony by its own hand, Microsoft to Apple and Mozilla. The next 10 years will be very interesting.

He called out the 3rd parties for relegating 3rd and 4th string developing teams to the Wii.

That would go a long way to explain why the graphics on this thing are eye-gougerific. Like someone said, the Wii is at least as powerful as the GC, and we got RE4 from that. You can't tell me this is all the Wii has to offer.

Yeah, everybody will be waggling a remote in five years time in all games!

Seriously, the controls in Wii games have been hugely disappointing almost without exception. Slow to react, not nearly as precise as people were led to believe, artifial (i.e. no 1:1 mapping to anything happening on screen), tiring in the long run and ...generally not really fun at all if the game itself sucks.

Surely it has potential in games where you need to point at something (can you say "minigames") but there are many gaming genres where it will never work *at all*, like driving games.
