Originally scheduled to go on sale last Friday, the European release of portable neck-breaking simulator Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops has been delayed due to a rather unfortunate oversight: the omission of the BBFC stamp (think ESRB rating, but with an accent) from the UMD. Apparently, the box proudly displays the appropriate stamp, but the disc packaged inside went out stampless. Retailers were forced to return all copies of the game while (we imagine) the bean counters at Konami snuck up behind the forgetful graphic designer, broke their neck, and shoved 'em in a locker.

Can't SONY get anything right? At least once? Just for a change?

I wouldn't want to be the guy in charge of the stamps. That's a lot of money Konami's having to eat.

I work at Choices UK and this happens more than you think, The Godfather on Xbox, Reservoir Dogs on PS2, The Godfather on PS3 all had the same issue.

If that's the case then maybe they factor in some contingency in the MSRP of the game.

Damn Sony, it's all thir fault. I am
never buying a Sony product ever again, what with this issue and RootKits, and forcing Blu-Ray on me.Screw you Sony...(end Xbot

@Mark
C'mon, you're blind if you don't think Sony is forcing Blu-Ray down your throat. Same thing they did with UMDs and look where that got them.
The rest is true, however.

dont compare blu ray to umd's. Apples and oranges. I know it was "pretend", but it did remind me of people complaining about rootkits which it just funny as hell. How many of those people complaing about rootkits even buy cd's. They probably are the ones downloading all their (and I use that word lightly)music for free anyway. It just another bullet point in which to hate sony...

Totally off topic, but Chris I really appreciate that you actually take the time to leave comments and respond to people about your blog posts, unlike some of your other blogging comrads. More bloggers should comment. Oh yeah nice podcast.

BBFC's jurisdiction only covers Britain, not Europe.

Well, fair enough. I do think "AYE ES AAAR BEE YUH-HUH" every time I see ESRB. Oh wait, no I don't. Shut up Joystiq.

This is not all Europe! Its only in the UK. I live in Italy and I received my copy of Portable Ops today (even if it was sent on Friday) and the disc has the stamp on and works with no problem... so MG: PO is delayed only in UK... or all Europe except for Italy

OH yeah you're right! I forgot about the rootkits they install on your computer when you put one of their CDs in your CD-ROM drive.
See.. thanks for reminding me!
Blasted SONY! They already (literally) make everything! Now they're going for MY computer!

If you didn't know, here's the deal. Starforce is more common than the rootkits on CDs. Sony snuck em on, got caught, never used em again.

Its not the poor designers fault.
- where was their account manager?
- did the client not proof their own product?
- did they not supply the correct brief?
- did no one at the umd production place notice?
mistakes happen often, and mostly its the clients fault for not checking their own product.
FO SHAME ON THEM!!

It's kind of sad that a giant fuss like this is made over a rating stamp that for all intents and purposes is completely redundant and will never ever need to be referenced in the real world.
