Yes, Shigeru Miyamoto told Entertainment Weekly that he could make Halo, although he did go on to say, "It's that I choose not to." It's hard to imagine what a Miyamoto-designed Halo would look like. Lots of bright colors, anthropomorphic flora and fauna, and guns that squirt pink goo come to mind. On second thought, maybe imagining that is a bad, bad idea.
Miyamoto drops this gem and some others in a recent interview, including the fact that "If I could build a game that somehow made the young people respect their elders ..." He also wants to make a game that teaches freelancers to pay their taxes. Thankfully, before we can decide he's lost his marbles, he goes on to say "But I probably sound like an old man when I bring these things up."
Whew. We didn't want to have to say it for him. Still, there's a reason Shiggy was named one of Time's 100 most influential people, and that the Wii is riding a wave of popularity ... he seems to know what fun is.

I'd say, aside from the regenerating health, Halo really did nothing new, it just took everything good out there and put it into one neat package
The key to its success is actually very Nintendo-esque. Simplicity and accessibility. It took the glories of PC shooters, and made them over (although haters and PC elitests tend to say "dumbed it down") for the console crowd.
Halo is for FPS what Super Mario 64 was to 3D platformers, it took a genre and set a standard, just as Doom did before it

"Wii fans are the most over-protective fans out there. Is it because you know subconsciously the Wii is handicapped." - Jack of No Trades
I think such things are only prevalent because of the constant bombardment of insults received during the last decade or so. Believe me, you'll change your behavior when you're on the receiving end you'll be crying out mantras of "can't we all just get along?" It's a pattern that stems from history; power corrupts and the strong usually get that power, regardless of form. In your perspective, you view yourself to be in power, the "Mr. Tell It Like It Is" (from your view). And instead of accepting people's choices, you'd like nothing more than to put them down and be a jerk about it.
Trust me, you're no better than the jerks who do their own Sony/MS bashing.
As for the topic, considering the question asked, perhaps Miyamoto meant that he could make A Halo-type game too. And although I agree to his view in developing games that hopefully stretches outside of the usual expectations (popular or not), I wouldn't mind seeing him try and do his own Halo-ish game (i.e. FPS). I think it helps the mind to do a lot of different things. You might learn something from creating other genres.

Without shiggy halo wouldn't exist.
Also hes made plenty of games that are better than halo, like almost every zelda game.

Let me just say that when you actually read the article (you know, RTFA), Miyamoto hardly comes off sounding condescending or high and mighty, nor is he really critical of what anyone else is doing. His message is basically that he won't do what's popular but what he thinks will be fun, whether it's a retread or something completely new.
I think the Sony and MS fanboys are simply out to crap on anything Nintendo and are twisting his words out of it's original meanings to suit their needs.
And before someone labels me a Nintendo fanboy, I do admit I've owned every Nintendo system (except the ill fated VB). But I've also owned every Sony system, excepting the PS3 and have both MS consoles. I'm a gamer. I don't give a crap where something was created or for what system. If it's a good game, it's a good game. And I can afford a PS3, I choose not to because much like the 3DO, I find it to be prohibitively expensive.
I think the path Sony took is the wrong one. I won't get into it too much except to say that I think the Cell CPU is powerful but not the best for gaming. I also think the parts used made it much too expensive without adding any real value to the PS3 as a games console.
On the topic of expensive games systems, I must admit I owned a Neo Geo...Samurai Shodown 2 with real arcade controllers was simply too F'ing incredible. And they were real arcade controls. We ripped apart a real arcade cabinet, built a custom box to house the controls, spliced it onto the normal Neo Geo controllers and away we go.
And Bungie, while relatively unknown was a darned good development house before MS bought them. Myth 3 and Marathon Infinity rocked. Halo, while a solid game is nothing innovative. That is not a criticism as 95% of all games today fall into the "nothing innovative" category. If it's been done before, even badly, then it's not innovation. And excepting limited number of weapons carried, everything in Halo has been done before it. Bungie has always been good about multiplayer modes in their games as witnessed by Myth and Marathon. "Kill the man with the ball" and "King of the Hill" from Marathon are two of my favorite game modes ever in a FPS.

I'm almost saddened by the multitudes of people who think that Miyamoto has made every single facet of the games that have been attributed to him.
He's may be the lead designer, but he's not the only guy at Nintendo. I know it sounds fairly obvious, but by the way people comment they act as if there wasn't the many programmers, artists, 3d modellers, etc that actually implemented the damn things. So don't lay the entire game at his feet.
Also, it's perhaps even more saddening that people think Miyamoto's version of Halo would be like Mario or any other of his games. Duh, if he ever did make that sort of game it would fit the genre. But his point is that just because he doesn't make those sort of games doesn't mean he can't make them.
But alas, I suppose this falls on deaf ears...

That is possibly the most arrogant statement I've ever heard from Miyamoto. Not that the man isn't allowed a little something after all he's done, but he usually seems like such a much humbler person. I guess making the Time 100 went to his head!

Take this into consideration: What he actually said, or meant to say, was probably lost in translation. It seems, from the context, that he meant to say something along the lines of, "I could produce a Halo-like game, but I choose to produce other types of games." Maybe I'm wrong, maybe he is taking a shot at Bungie, but it doesn't sound like it to me.

Numberone said it all, He was saying making a FPS doesn't take much creativity, because it doesn't.
I still don't understand why halo2 was "The best game ever" because its just the same old thing. Shoot, blow stuff up, you win game over...

So...
I read all 214 comments. Let me take a breather....
Ok...Let me start simply by stating this: I am not a fanboy of any shape or form. For the last 21 years, I've played video games on every system: Nintendo (NES, SNES, GB, GBC GBA DS) Sega (Master, Saturn, Dream Cast, that portable thing) Sony (PSX, PS2) and MS (Xbox one and two), and I think many of you, and I do NOT care who you are, have forgotten what it means to be a gamer.
You all sit there, and time and again it has been said in this war, and time and again forgotten. In the sake of brevity and laziness (although, I believe more of a case of laziness) I will not cite my sources, yet I will lead you to the general idea of those posts: gaming, no matter console council, is based off the game...and always will be.
Regardless if you're a Sony "fanboy" or a "ms" fanboy, etc, it just doesn't matter. Have you all forgotten what it means to love gaming..? where does flaming someone for not liking your system get you? I guarantee most of you are hypocritical. I guarantee almost ALL of you have played games on all of those systems, or own multiple systems. Just because you play one more than another at a certain time, is NOT because of thesystem, but because of the game.
I love my DS, I do...it is very good, I devoted 80+ hours to the new Poke'mon (what can I say...ha), but before that I devoted 100+ hours to FFXII (and almost 500 days play time to FFXI for PC), and you know what before that? I finally got my hands on Ninja Gaiden for Xbox (I know, long over due) ...so...in almost 5 months, I've played many games for different systems...(now, mostly my Ds because I just got my R4) but...doesn't this debate get redundant for you people???
And..the sad thing is..this is the rational part of this debate. You all didn't start with what council you're on now (unless you're young-guns, in which case, ignore that), yet I can almost predict most of you didn't start with your Sony's or MS's....you most likely started with the nintendo or Sega...So..doesn't that just make you hypocritical in the end?
And, for the record, Miyamoto's speech was lost in translation. He has rarely, if ever shown a sense of arrogance, and I doubt he would now, especially since the ds has sold close to 30 million units, and the Wii is doing so well...This isn't fanboyism...this is a fact. In rational, logical thinking, don't you think he would have already said many, many more arrogant things. The post a few before this, mentioned the French translation, and after reading a few Japanese sights about this conversation, that one is, indeed, much closer, and humbling to what was originally said.
PS, I liked Halo....it fit the "non-avid FPSer" quite well, IMO...and I like Zelda...Oh god, I divided by zero!...ZOMGZ
But seriously...most of you need to stop the fanboyism...no one is saying you can't like something more than another- most of you boarder the realm of hypocrisy over and over again though.
Is is 4am EST, so if you don't look at my main point, and flame my grammar...well, you're a special case..because I'm not editing this...
Kthx
