Play Final Fantasy VII in Second Life
Diehard Final Fantasy VII fans have recreated Midgar in virtual world Second Life. To make things even sweeter, they've even created an RPG sim in SL so that residents can fight and upgrade their way to notoriety. Weapons and materia (gems used for magic in the FFVII universe) can be bought for Linden bucks, which converts to real world money at a rate of approximately US $1 for every 270 Linden dollars.
According to New World Notes writer Onder Skall, the game has around 300 players. Our experience with the world proved it to be expansive; upon teleporting to the start of the sim, we stepped out of the overlooking portal room and had an exhilirating view of the massive city on our equally massive fall.
As to whether or not the game has the blessing of IP owner Square Enix, not even the creators are sure. While they do the developer a service by providing a high quality sim that promotes the Final Fantasy brand to great success, they are making money (however little it may be) off of the brand. SL users can click here to go to Midgar directly.

I'm almost tempted to reinstall SL to see this...
Almost.

Anyone have screenshots of this undertaking?

Okay, Joe, what the hell does that have anything to do with the Final Fantasy VII place in Second Life?
Thanks for contributing with your MASSIVE intellect.

On topic: I'd pay to see this. It would be cool just to walk around it. But alas, I just can't find myself paying for a game like this.

@ Joe:
Here's a tip for avoiding that. First, don't open the search box and type 'furries with 12 tits and people with 7 foot long virtual penises in front of them'. Then, don't find a match, click the Teleport button and stare longingly at the avatars around you.
@ Ken:
Accounts are free, and Linden Dollars are free if you can find a 'camping chair' or an AdHUD. Even then, you could play this RP sim just with the money given to you upon creating an account.
The idea seems interesting, and I might give it a look before the Shinra Enforcers (lawyers) swoop in to stop it. Still, you've gotta appreciate the labour of love that this project is, regardless of your stance on Second Life or copyright infringement.

I suggest people visit it now. Square-Enix loves sending out cease and desist notices.

I hope they get sued just because having FFX in Second Life just lowers FFX fans to an incredible low.
Aberu @ May 7th 2007 5:54PM
You should have provided us with the email link to protest this to SquareEnix. I mean SquareEnix shut down the non-profit Chrono Resurrection in no time flat, but this makes profits off of their IP. An IP they looked to revive recently hardcore as well, so they should be sending some lawyers over shortly I hope.

Funny how the mos compelling reason to play Second Life came from another game.

"they are making money (however little it may be) off of the brand."
source (2nd life insider):
"but those involved certainly aren't making any money off of this..."
so which is it?

@Aberu
WTF, you actually LIKE it when lawyers shut down fan projects? Are you somehow morally against people wanting to show their appreciation for something they no doubt already paid for?

I am one of the owners of the Midgar Sim in SL, and I just want to let you all know that we are completely non-profit, all money made is spent on the sim to keep it running.
