Ziff's writing talent is among the best in the business. 1up will hopefully remain largely intact--their videos, podcasts and even (gasp) written reviews are highly entertaining and more honest than the other big players'. I fear to think what will happen to the staffers at magazines like GFW and EGM, however. Those guys produce a great product that I prefer in printed form. I ain't taking my laptop into the bathroom with me.

This comes as no surprise to me in the fast-growing world of online media. Fortunately, in my country, the use of websites as a replacement for magazines is nowhere near the evolution of the American market. So my job as a magazine journalist is safe, for now.

I can see where he's coming from. PC Magazine has declined so badly in the past few years (and has fallen even more precipitously if you compare it to the good old days when you could actually find tech info in the magazine). Now it's mostly aimed at your mother or brain-dead business users. Huge spreads about new cars (what?) and text padded out hugely with giant product photos with clever red-pen 'writing' on them to summarize the articles so you don't have to read them.

I have a cheap sub that doesn't run out till sometime in 2008 but even at less than a dollar an issue I regret it.

A magazine about magazines? That's really meta.

Is it just me missing something?
PC Magazine being thrown out has nothing to do with gaming magazines. PC Magazine is not a gaming magazine! It is a general tech magazine. I could see if the PR agent was throwing out their free copy of EGM or GFW, that would equate to a statement on gaming magazines.
To be honest, I barely skim PC Magazine if it all myself but I do read EGM and GFW.

How well is the Folio magazine doing? I imagine they have a limited audience. I'm reading about an article they did online instead of in print on their magazine.

This all seems like a good deal of FUD to me, and sounds like a bunch of the higher ups are more interested in the bottom line rather than continuing to produce a quality product. I subscribe to both GFW and EGM, and find them to be a better read than most "reliable" websites... Not to say I don't read those websites for comparisons sake, but the Internet in general has yet to totally replace print. Like Maxathon said, until I can get the Internet in the toilet on the cheap I'll be reupping my subscription.

People who want to get all of the important information in a magazine monthly, instead of hunting blogs and websites day in an day out.

Several of the Ziff Davis staff were jerks to me when I e-mailed them as an aspiring writer.

I also found myself in a flame war with the editors on the 1up Boards when I pointed out the existing magazine formats were losing readers.

So I'm glad to see the arrogant bastards go down in flames.

Oh, I think their reviews are accurate, and their articles are entertaining, but the jerk factor keeps me from lementing the fact that these folk are out of a job.

I have to say I'm not surprised. I agree with many of the other comments that the quality has really dropped off in the last year or two. But what I especially hate, and what kept me from renewing my subscription to EGM, is that the letters section has became a shooting gallery for little more belittling people.
