New PSP game, Final Fantasy Dissidia, announced
So, we don't know about you, but we love the early stages in a game's life cycle. Take the newly-launched official site for Final Fantasy Dissidia, for example. Thanks to some digging by PSP Fanboy, we know it's a PSP game. Past that, the official site is all mystery. All we get is a logo (seen above) and the phrase "Fantasy is endless, Fantasy has no limited form." Oh, and we learn that the character design is being done by Tetsuya Nomura. Other than that, we're clueless. See, isn't this exhilarating?
What could the game be? Is it part of the Final Fantasy XIII decade? Is it a sequel to Dirge of Cerberus? (God, we hope not.) A sequel to Mystic Quest? (Umm, no.) Sure, we'll learn more during the Square Enix party in a few days, but we're kind of enjoying the mystery at the moment.

The vague description kinda makes it sound like an online game...
apoc06 @ May 8th 2007 9:27AM
this made my morning... shame i don't really know what the hell "this" is.
kingofwale @ May 8th 2007 9:27AM
am I excited? yes, only because I'm a FF fan and a pSP owner.
but here's a better question. where's my Crisis Core? and why are they making another one with Crisis Core is STILL in production?
I'm not doubting Enix's ability to make games, I'm doubting the fact they have enough programmers to take 124243 titles at once.
JodyAnthony @ May 8th 2007 9:31AM
sweet. more portable rpgs are always a plus. I dont have time to play RPGs on my tv really, so handhelds are like a godsend.
Jon @ May 8th 2007 9:41AM
"the character design is being done by Tetsuya Nomura."
I hope not.
polly @ May 8th 2007 9:52AM
FINAL Fantasy? One can only hope.
Hey look, a shark!
Yayaja @ May 8th 2007 10:01AM
The doubeheaded arrow running through the word Dissidia reminds me of the curvature of a planet, the horizon as seen from space. The figures depicted remind me of the Espers from FF6. I'm guessing that they are Ifrit and Shiva (or whatever they decide to rename them). You know what I had always thought would make a great game? A game set a couple of hundred years before the events of FF6, during the war of the Magi. It would be interesting to pilot beings that are pure magic themselves and have them fight beings of magic as well. But whatever it is, for fuck's sake PLEASE give us a world map and an airship. Yeah its cliche and completely predictable but its still better then the transport systems found in FF10 and FF12.
minus_273 @ May 8th 2007 10:02AM
unlimited saga remake! exactly what the psp needs.
Todd @ May 8th 2007 10:04AM
Final Fantasy was exciting when the games came out every couple years. I'm starting to get rather tired and sick of the franchise now.
samfish @ May 8th 2007 10:25AM
OK, Sony fanboys. You are now officially NOT allowed to whine about Nintendo whoring out Mario anymore, unless you want a citation from the Hypocrite Police.
JodyAnthony @ May 8th 2007 10:27AM
samfish, sony doesnt make the final fantasy games.
Dan @ May 8th 2007 10:31AM
lolxxors pwned retard samfish!!
samfish @ May 8th 2007 10:32AM
"samfish, sony doesnt make the final fantasy games."
I know, but don't kid yourself- Final Fantasy and Sony go pretty much hand-in-hand.
Matt @ May 8th 2007 10:32AM
Are you sure this isn't a UMD video?
JodyAnthony @ May 8th 2007 10:35AM
luckily I'm all for the whoring out of franchises. companies gotta make money. companies have to stick with established franchises that can sell on name alone because of the high cost of creating new games. People are a lot more likely to buy 'Final Fantasy Dissidia' than they are 'Dissidia'
Chilly @ May 8th 2007 10:36AM
SE can't put a game out on a Sony system w/o approval from Sony, so Sony is allowing the excessive amounts of FF games to be thrown onto their system. While not directly responsible, they are culpable in this process.
Wolff @ May 8th 2007 10:39AM
@15
I'm with Todd (#9) on this one. SE is diluting the FF name and putting out a bunch of games of 'meh' quality as opposed to a few games of stellar quantity. I'm all for quality over quantity.
sheppy @ May 8th 2007 10:40AM
"I know, but don't kid yourself- Final Fantasy and Sony go pretty much hand-in-hand."
Ooooo, so that's why FFXI is on PC and 360. And how Final Fantasy 1-6 is on Nintendo handhelds. And crystal Chronicles 2 and Revenant Wings, somehow ended up on DS.
I mean, not to be a stickler but Nintendo has been benefitting just as much as Sony from the Nintendo name of late. I mean, hell. Nintendo DS has the ONLY Final Fantasy RTS game.
sheppy @ May 8th 2007 10:41AM
damn, from the Final Fantasy name of late.
mjemirzian @ May 8th 2007 11:21AM
My guess is a random generated dungeon/random generated world type game.
orAngeMicro @ May 8th 2007 11:26AM
olol samfish got schooled by the ff crowd! aahahahaahhaha
sheppy @ May 8th 2007 11:26AM
"its over sony is finished
enjoy your belts and Zippers and more belts"
I really have to say this because it's a tired ass bash each time it comes up. Video games are not meant to reflect reality. Period. Just as comics are not supposed to reflect reality. If I buy an RPG that has a character with one huge mechanical arm that would imbalance another person but uses this arm in the same way Gama in Ninja Scroll or Chad in Bleach would, I won't bitch. Just like I won't bitch when the character designs on Gears Of War 2 have even more pointlessly glowy bit on their armor and guns. You know why?
It looks cool and it's just a fucking game. When Yoshitaka Amano was heading up the character designs, nobody organized a rant on how all the males look like females. I mean, Final Fantasy has always been about the excessive and pointless. And if you couldn't figure this out, Wruh Roh, then maybe you deserve nothing more than EA sports games and WWII shooters.
Some of us like excessive in our art styles.
JodyAnthony @ May 8th 2007 11:38AM
according to the internets its sounding like this is going to be a fighting game starring characters from past final fantasy games. who knows.
Jon @ May 8th 2007 12:41PM
@samfish,
Really? Six main FF games on Nintendo systems and five main FF games on Sony systems (FFXI doesn't count).
Then there are the FFI-VI remakes on GBA and spin-offs on the DS...
Aex @ May 8th 2007 12:44PM
@Sheppy
Hmm, a fighting game, Sheppy? I unno, I played FFXI for a very very long time, and there is one thing I can say for certain. SE sucks at Player vs Player. Hell, look at Ergheiz(sp?)... Oh well, more PSP love from SE XD
Aex @ May 8th 2007 12:44PM
@Aex
You dumb bastard, that last comment was directed at JodyAnthony, not Sheppy! /slap, you dumb ho.
sheppy @ May 8th 2007 2:09PM
I severely doubt it's a fighting game. Incidently, Squaresoft made some pretty good wrestling games that just never made it stateside. Plus, Tobal.

Correct, i agree with you.
I'm tired of all these people bitchin about how they want games to be more realistic. If you want to trick out your car, get a job, save money and buy the parts.(also learn how to do it) If you want to play baseball or basket ball, go outside an play.
Why is it that people want there games to do things that they could easliy do themselves.
Now i'm not saying go shot someone in real life, like in GTA. So don't be stupid.
One reality is enough.
shase @ May 8th 2007 7:02PM
why dont people like Tetsuya Nomura? He designed a ton of games. Maybe i am missing something here...
Joe @ May 8th 2007 7:27PM
"why dont people like Tetsuya Nomura? He designed a ton of games. Maybe i am missing something here..."
Because that ton of games he designed, or had his hand in, are some of the most heavy-handed and unnecessarily convoluted games ever made.
The fact that he's now at the helm of FFXIII brings a tear to my eye.
NekoMode @ May 8th 2007 8:19PM
Oh God the chain of bad sequels and spin offs never end do they? Square Enix what have you done to my Squaresoft & Enix? They used to make good games!
If your gonna make sequels forget your FF Decade and give me some Legend of Dragoon or something...
Purple Haze @ May 9th 2007 1:20AM
I really wish they just stopped with final fantasy when hironobu left. But no they had to fuck it up! Not that Final Fantasy XII is bad its just not Final Fantasy.
Webhead @ May 11th 2007 10:47PM
I'm also with Todd and Wolff here, as Sqaure has lost its drive to create something truly new and original. Bringing the same bucket of water out of the same well is what no fracise should be about. Square hasn't tooken a risk since Final Fantasy 12. Square as a whole has lost a great deal of their talants from left to right, from Sakaguchi, Mitsuda, Matsuno, Takahashi to Uemetsu. In this generation more then any, more and more people are looking to other companies for thier fixes. Square has to prove to me that they can create a good fighting game without throwing another Bouncer my way. I for has become cynical about the whole thing. There is a small part of me that hopes that Square will return to it's former glory someday, for the sake of all gamers.
. Oh God the chain of bad sequels and spin offs never end do they? Square Enix what have you done to my Squaresoft & Enix? They used to make good games!

And it looks like it never will. Square feels the need to repackage thier games with spin-offs and sequels, as they did with Final Fantasy 10-2, Final Fantasy Revanent Wings, and Final Fantasy 13 Fabula Nova Cystallis. If you take a look at one their articles on IGN about Final Fantasy 13, their denial off this only seals the deal that it will be a long time before something new comeslong.
"why dont people like Tetsuya Nomura? He designed a ton of games. Maybe i am missing something here..."
Thats because Nomura hasn't shown varitation in his stlye since Final Fantsy 7/8. He's a talanted artist and I hold his Parasite Eve 1/2 as his best work. However he's been shelling out the same designs since, weather it be Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy Versus 13 or It's a Wonderful World. If he had any talent to get past all those fancy hair styles, zippers, and jelwry he would grow as an artist and director, looking at the Dissidia scan has only rekindle that belief. I don't think he will though, not after the success of Kingdom Hearts.
batman @ May 13th 2007 12:36AM
it's an all-star final fantasy game. A trailer at the recent final fantasy party in japan showed a trailer including zidane kuja sephiroth and cecil
