Xbox 360 Spring Update coming tomorrow
Xbox 360 gamers, prepare to have your mind blown (until a few minutes later when you don't notice it anymore): The spring 360 update drops tomorrow. Are you prepared to be reminded that Messenger actually exists? Are you ready to know what Achievement you got without having to press that big button? Are you ready to know what game is in your console without actually having to open it, you lazy bastard? Well, you better be, because it's the most exciting stuff in the update.
Well, there is the enticing, yet puzzling boast that "Video trick modes (fast forward, rewind, chapter skip) can now be used while downloading Video Marketplace content." (Woah! Awesome trick! You're fast-forwarding!) Oh, and the new H.264 video support (drool!). Crap, we nearly forgot that you can set your 360 to turn off after downloading content to help save energy. Take that, you sanctimonious home folders! The 360 is a tree hugger. The hacky sack circle begins at 5am EST tomorrow.

I wonder if this will brick some 360s, considering what happened with the last major update.
Patrick @ May 8th 2007 10:06PM
mp4 too. i know h.264 is mp4 but not just specifically that!

No hacky sacking of any kind has happened at 5am.

"mp4 too. i know h.264 is mp4 but not just specifically that!"
MP4 is a container. H264 is a compression method. They are not even close to the same thing, though it is quite common to find H264-compressed video inside MP4 containers.

I predict an spike in the number of bricked units... like last time around. That Texas refurb place are probably putting their people on call.
Mustang @ May 8th 2007 10:30PM
I predict a spike in the number of trolls posting here with the same old crap. Brick this or 3 rings that. Get a life.
bootsielon @ May 8th 2007 10:32PM
Please, bring an update that disables the red ring of death. Thank you.
MO @ May 8th 2007 10:43PM
McElroy, I think that you should say "Get ready to have your systems bricked!"
James @ May 8th 2007 10:41PM
Wow, the 360 wouldn't tell you what game was in the system until you started the game nor did it have h.264 support? The PS3 has been doing both since day 1. I thought the Xbox was superior in every way? I guess when it comes to the stuff you *don't* have to pay $50 a year for, the 360 is not so superior. [Cue someone bringing up Microsoft-centric features like media center extension and Windows Media support. Cue fanboy slap-fight. Cue me not caring.]
SuperDave @ May 8th 2007 10:43PM
I could swear that this update was supposed to have an update that made your disc drive not have to spin up as much, thus making it quieter. Am I thinking about a different update?
ahatter @ May 8th 2007 10:47PM
wow the trolls are thick tonight.
Zero Iscariot @ May 8th 2007 10:56PM
Sony sure has a lot of wannabe stealth trolls on all the major sites...2 exact same comments from 2 different "people"..lol. How much do they pay you? Some free PSP's?
Xbox 360 is a hell of alot better than PS3 as a game machine. Just compare games, price, online features, choice (optional HD-DVD), etc.
I'm sick of you loser fucks pretending to hate on Xbox 360 for some free crappy ratchet & clank games. This needs to be addressed big time. Sony is a bunch of Slimy Japs who went from first to worst, deal with it.
Yeti @ May 8th 2007 10:59PM
#11 That was a very well thought out post but you forgot to end it with "PS3 rulz or Sony is teh sh*t!!". There's always next time.
delsvr @ May 8th 2007 11:01PM
blame the article. the way it's written, trolling is bound to follow.
somebody change mcelroy's diapers.

This is all great. But please, for the love of whichever deity is in fashion in Redmond, foul or fair, can we get multiple user private chats? Please? It seems like it would be so simple in comparison.

This thread is a sick example of ps3 fanboyism and honestly kind of shows joystiq.com has become a one-sided audience almost. I guess there was 10 fanboy posts, 2 posts about the issue itself and 4 posts just sighing at the fanboy's jealousy.
In xbox 360 defense, I guess their fanboys are busy playing games. However, your ps3 is probably folding@home all by tiself while your spamming garbage online.
Alexander @ May 8th 2007 11:05PM
Internet Browser Please next update PS3 and Wii have might as well get it its hot plus xbox magazine said so too

yeah...except 360 day 1 was nov. 22, 2005 not ps3 day 1...

Imadogg99 @ May 8th 2007 11:20PM
Well I'm excited for this update, I guess unlike most people here...
And though the last big update did not "brick" my 360, I am on my 3rd one, getting the 3 red lights on my first one and 2 red lights every time I played before I had to switch my second one. I hope this doesn't cause any problems.
warren @ May 8th 2007 11:27PM
Let me ask. How come Major Nelson Gamerscore is 100?
GWolf @ May 8th 2007 11:30PM
Someone above me had it right, PS3 fanboys are pretty pathetic having nothing better to do than come to 360 specific sites to spread FUD. Shame they don't have a game console with actual games to spend their time with. Can someone please explain to me what motivates them; is it envy, ego, lusting after their neighbors wife, sour grapes what is it exactly. These people should be studied.
Have fun curing cancer.
fffunfarm06---xbl @ May 8th 2007 11:32PM
wow i am so pissed. my friend made my account with his own hotmail account about 2 years ago for me. i want to change it to my hotmail account i use for msn IM but i called M$ and they said they cant change emails. son of a bitch. :(
Dr. able @ May 8th 2007 11:47PM
Great. I always look forward to system updates on the premise that 'maybe it will make the machine run better'. The real question is what good is this upcoming update going to do for the people that don't have an XBL gold account. But the last thing I expect the update to do is to brick my console, although there is always that 5 seconds of suspense as you anxiously stare at a blank tv screen after the console applies the update and reboots to hand you the verdict: 'Brick' or 'Splash' screen.
OTAM @ May 8th 2007 11:56PM
How about we get some Divx/Xvid support and the ability to fast forward music already for christ sakes.
Instead we get the ability to use Windows Messenger. I bet all 5 people using that program are happy about this update.
Hiroken @ May 8th 2007 11:58PM
Alright, I have to say two things:
1. Shame on 360 fanboys for getting up in arms about some PS3 fanboy comments when the exact same thing happens all the time the other way around, and everyone knows it.
2. Shame on PS3 fanboys for being so stupid as to completely waste an opportunity to be the grown-up and not use this news to troll. It has absolutely NO relevance to bricked systems in it (the update isn't even here--just because other updates have caused problems doesn't mean this one will)
Just so everyone knows, at least one PS loyal hopes all of your systems make it through the update fine and that you enjoy your new features--and I know that at least some of you wish PS3 owners the same as our updates come.
C'mon, guys--let's show the world the gaming medium is an art and that the people who love it can be mature. Start here.

If you want to get xvid/divx videos, as well as many other file formats on your 360, there are a number of solutions. Right now I'm using orb which works well and transcodes fine and even does it to certain phones which is pretty cool I think. Transcode 360 and there are a few others out there and easy to set up as well and even options for you mac lovers out there. Orb comes recommended from me if you have a decently speced pc and I really have been using it a lot. Good luck on updates everyone. I know my 360 is out of warranty and I haven't had a single issue with it yet.
Tom @ May 9th 2007 12:27AM
I don't see what that has to do with groundskeeper Willy.

LOL, Sony trolls are the best trolls!
Dirk Dorkelson @ May 9th 2007 12:42AM
Warren,
I don't know what site you're looking at, but the gamertag on Major Nelson's site has a score of 8770.
waves @ May 9th 2007 12:54AM
Dirk Dorkelson,
He was looking at the screenshot, which was most likely taken from a test environment for the update. So yeah, that's not his real score.
Digi Smalls @ May 9th 2007 12:56AM
i hope this MS update will let me play some games on my PS3. and fix the controller drop offs too. hypocrites.
i miss the days when Playstation fanboys were all about "the games". remember those days?
now they're mysteriously (and suddenly) just about hardware...hdmi, internal power supplies, folding calculation speed and memory card slots...
hate to actually say it, but lol.
.
Dirk Dorkelson @ May 9th 2007 12:57AM
Whoops, that'll teach me to skip the picture and go straight to the words.
orAngeMicro @ May 9th 2007 1:23AM
Sony is a bunch of Slimy Japs
AHAHAHAHHA!@#@ thtas the funniest this ive read ina while
Otis Whitaker @ May 9th 2007 1:49AM
I've noticed that in the list of things updated, it mentions MPEG-4 Part 2 compatability.
Now, I'm not entirely sure, but isn't Xvid and Divx the most popular implementation of MPEG-4 Part 2?
What does compatability on the 360 for it even mean?
Stynxeffect @ May 9th 2007 2:15AM
The 360 is far from a tree hugger! If you switch the 360 off it forgets what time and date it is- and you have to reset it What's that all about???? THats not very "next-gen" is it I can turn off my GC,PS2,PS3 and they remember the time and date when you plug them back in. I end up leaving my 360 plugged in because I cant be bothered resetting the time and date every time I want to use it. When I phoned MS about this they told me to leave it on as it only uses a couple of volts blahblah I told them well times that by 10 million and XBOX 360 is DESTROYING THE PLANET. No treehugging here, move along.
Hiroken @ May 9th 2007 2:22AM
And again, my plea to gamers to get their heads screwed on straight and simply listen goes almost completely ignored.
Want to know why both Microsoft and Sony get away with their antics? It's because you, as gamers, condone it with your ignorant words and blind hate--you're fighting a war, not playing games.
Please, please, please, stop all of this fanboyism. If you have a preference, fine--but keep your degrading comments to yourself. It certainly isn't helping anything.
Kindly read my last post--it's #30.
~Hiro
Arturo @ May 9th 2007 2:32AM
As if a single comment or I suppose two now from someone here will erase fanboyism forever....why sincerely ask as if you're actually going to make an impact?
Demetrius @ May 9th 2007 3:07AM
#43 what are you talking about i unplug my xbox all the time and it doesnt reset that as the first xbox the 360 remembers the time
Zero Iscariot @ May 9th 2007 3:07AM
Those guys that had the EXACT same reply (#1 and #3) are posting the same shit on every site that has a dash update post (engadget for example)... This needs to be addressed by the big name sites, it is deceitful marketing on Sony's part.
These retards get paid PER POST for finding competitors (Xbox) posts and leaving comments that reflect bad on the product.
Sony is scared...they won't even try to touch Nintendo, so they are going after Microsoft, spreading negative bullshit instead of pimping new games because they dont have any.
