Final Fantasy Dissidia looks to be a brawler
Err, guys? Not to alarm you, but a new scan from Japan's Shonen Jump magazine seems to indicate that Square Enix is looking to revisit the fighting genre. Recently revealed as a Sony PSP title, Final Fantasy Dissidia appears to do away with traditional RPG fare, distilling epic conflict into one-on-one battles between series protagonists, antagonists and, in most cases, exhibitionists.
If you examine the page, you're sure to spy the presence of Final Fantasy IX's rat-tailed thief, Zidane, duking it out with his crystal-hating nemesis, Kuja. It remains to be seen whether Square Enix will include characters from across the series in a Power Stone-esque battle royale, but the possibility is sure to be an exciting one for intense Final Fans. Can Squall mope the floor with Cloud? Will Quina Quen clobber Kefka? Could Tidus and Vaan even manage to injure each other? Final Fantasy Dissidia may just hold the answers. For now, we'd best wait until Square Enix provides some of their own.

Hell no!
Keif @ May 9th 2007 12:02PM
in the last article talked about it, square even says its turn based.

Milking Wars: Mario vs Final Fantasy
sheppy @ May 9th 2007 12:04PM
Turn based, I could get down with. But a brawler on a handheld? Only Shonen Jump has gotten it right so far.
Yayaja @ May 9th 2007 12:07PM
My initial gut reaction is a gut reactiom... namely, vomiting, but on further thought this might not actually be that bad, IF it was done right. It would need EVERY Major CHaracter from ALL the FInal fantasies all with their own unique fighting stylesthat still stay true to their characters in the original games.
JodyAnthony @ May 9th 2007 12:23PM
I will buy it if it has Yuffie
^FourthDimensionGod^ @ May 9th 2007 12:25PM
Wow. first pic is of Zidane and Kuja(both MALE) from FF9....and i thought Square couldnt make male characters look anymore shemale when they made Vaan.
Hiroken @ May 9th 2007 12:26PM
I don't know what you guys are talking about--I think this is a great idea! I remember how much fun I had unlocking and playing as FFVII characters in Ehrgeiz--if the battle engine is at least decent with a little depth to each character's strengths and weaknesses, this game could be a ton of fun ^^
Heliophage @ May 9th 2007 12:28PM
Sounds like Ehrgeiz...
PhyerFly @ May 11th 2007 11:26AM
Square did this a while back with "The Bouncer" for PS2, and arguably with "Dirge of the Cerberus". Why artistically beautiful, neither of those games sold well.
StrangeBum @ May 9th 2007 12:41PM
Ummm...remember people, it's made by 'The Bouncer' team. That was not exactly a great game, but being an FF fan, here's to hoping that they don't screw this up and actually make a decent game.
ForcedSterilizationsForAll @ May 9th 2007 12:43PM
Can Squall mope the floor with Cloud? I hope you meant mop. I don't want to see two emos trying to get into a slap fight and then just sitting on the floor crying to see who could cry the longest.
Anni @ May 9th 2007 12:45PM
Speaking of Ehrgeiz, I hope Cloud is the automatic win character in Dissidia too!
kingofwale @ May 9th 2007 12:46PM
>3. Milking Wars: Mario vs Final Fantasy
at least FF doesn't use the SAME character in ALL its games.
and then expand the characer into other games, like racing, fighting, RPG, sports...
now,
SquareEnix Intern @ May 9th 2007 12:58PM
Give it a chance, its something different at least. There trying.
Good Luck SquareEnix!

The Bouncer...Part Deux...on a handheld?
God help us all!

LOLLERBARBIE!!!!!1!!1
All the hate is probably coming from DS phanbois who are upset they get remakes while the PSP gets the ORIGINAL and NEW titles (Crisis Core, Dissidia). I say anyone who can say "OMG this game is teh lam3!" from 1 screenshot a handful of details is an absolute idiot.
Lets wait till we get more details before we bash this title to death mmmkay?
Jason @ May 9th 2007 2:32PM
I loved "The Bouncer", as well as anything FF related. This doesn't look like it's going to be that bad.

#2 I hope you're wrong, a turn base fighting game would suck.
JodyAnthony @ May 9th 2007 1:24PM
gullum, fanboyism works both ways.
and for the record, PSP is getting the Final Fantasy Tactics remake while the DS is getting an original FFT.

"Ummm...remember people, it's made by 'The Bouncer' team. That was not exactly a great game, but being an FF fan, here's to hoping that they don't screw this up and actually make a decent game"
Ummm.. no its not, thats The Last Remnant, a diffrent square enix game. this is totally diffrent
OhJustSomeRandomGuy @ May 9th 2007 1:49PM
I thought this would be a bad idea, and then I thought about it a bit more.
Imagine a Street Fighter crossed with the Materia System from FF7. (Conversely, this game is going to be infinitely bad if they use they cross Street Fighter with FF8's magic system.)
You have characters with their stock moves, Clouds got his sword, Tifa's got brawler attacks, Yuffie has projectiles, and Barret and Vincent shoot at you.
But then you've got your own custimized materia. Looking to slow down an opponent to set up a big attack? Equip Ice. Need to counter an opponent's projectile's? Equip Fire.
Map those materia attacks on your triggers, so they don't interfere with standard special moves, and once your super gauge gets built up hit a trigger for various levels of Materia attacks, or unload a limit break with a special.
I think you could craft yourself a pretty nice little fighting system going with this universe.
Silver R. Wolfe @ May 9th 2007 1:51PM
JodyAnthony, no. The DS is getting an original FFTA which is nothing to gloat about. :D
Aberu @ May 9th 2007 1:58PM
It's not alarming. It's exciting. I loved Ehrgeiz and me and my friends had little tournaments with it when we were younger. Ehrgeiz was the most underrated fighting game, along with Tobal.
JodyAnthony @ May 9th 2007 2:01PM
heh, touche, silver!

@ OhJustSomeRandomGuy
great comments there mate...im keeping my fingers crossed on that one...
p.s erghiez was shite beyond belief! tobal meh...now, kensie sacred fist on the other hand (or countered) ;) was great!!! come on konami...show em what you're made of (or square as the case may be)lol
rowd149 @ May 9th 2007 2:43PM
Okay, I love Kingdom Hearts and all that good shit, but is anyone else slightly perturbed over Nomura's de facto takeover of all that is Squeenix?
OhJustSomeRandomGuy @ May 9th 2007 3:00PM
Rowd149:
Yeah, ever since Sakaguchi got forced out for his ego-tripping, Nomura's ego-tripping has been allowed to go unchecked.
Extraneous zippers for everyone!
Christopher7xii @ May 9th 2007 3:16PM
Yeah... I kind of strongly dislike Nomura. Would love it if he retired already.
This game though already caught my interest. A PSP final fantasy that crosses the games with heroes / villains from multiple titles? Yes please. Wether it be RPG, action, platform, fighting, or even fucking sports. i am DOWN with it.
and by the way, Squall >>>>> cloud. Cloud just got manipulated left and right. Squall just hated everything.
austenw @ May 9th 2007 3:21PM
lol "Err, Guys?" ... Ehrgeiz. Good one.
CJC @ May 9th 2007 4:28PM
So in the link, who's that in the top right? Is it Cecil? I can't really tell with these newfangled "three-dee" graphics you kids love nowadays.
Also, it looks i'm gonna have to get that PSP soon.
rainking187 @ May 9th 2007 5:27PM
"13. >3. Milking Wars: Mario vs Final Fantasy

Yeah, it totally sucks that they made Mario branch out into other generes besides platforming, even if most of those games are really really fun. Come on! As for milking, one game for a whole decade? I mean if it's as good as Final Fantasy VI it would be awesome. But seeing as how I've played every FF game since then I can confidently say it won't be. And seriously, I can't even keep up with all the FF games. There's the one up above, there's a new tactics for PSP, there's another tactics for the DS I think, oh then there's Revenant Wings, and the FF IV DS remake...Seriously, I guess if they're planning to milk one game for ten years they're trying to put out as many games as they can beforehand. Anyone got a scorecard for recent and future FF games? Am I the only one longing for the days when we all played III(US) on the SNES and then were all very confused when VII was released on PS?
OhJustSomeRandomGuy @ May 9th 2007 6:53PM
rainking:
You're one of the few who pines for those days. I liked when Final Fantasy switched and went to a more epic adventure, something that would have been possible on N64 carts without a huge drop in quality.
That's what Nintendo gets for breaking their contract with Sony and deciding to stick with cartridges at the last moment.
Nintendo wins the milk wars hands-down. How many times has Super Mario Bros. 3 been released? 4? 5? Mario Tennis, Baseball, Strikers, and 3-on-3 Basketball were all huge letdowns.
What happened to the days when Nintendo could make a sports game like NES Hockey or NES Volleyball and not have to shoehorn the entire Muchroom Kingdom into a game? I'd buy DS Hockey, Baseball or Tennis in no time, provided they built it as a sports game first and then a Nintendo game second.
I don't need Chain Chomps and Bowser and Fire Flowers totally ruining the game. Great, it's "Pick up the Powerups"... on a tennis court!
Nintendo has run Mario and the gang into the GROUND. Final Fantasy VII has what? 4 spin-offs and you guys ae calling it milking? That isn't CLOSE to milking. Nintendo's on the level of EA's recycling at this point.
Which character is the one crowing about how he's in the most video games ever?
Purple Haze @ May 10th 2007 6:12AM
I reckon square-enix is killing final fantasy slowly.
It hasnt been the same since it was just squaresoft
Purple Haze @ May 10th 2007 6:18AM
@OhJustSomeRandomGuy
Yeah i agree they are screwing with mario a lot but at least everytime they bring out one of the core games, it's quality. Sunshine i like but not so much quaility as 64 and the ds/gameboy games are awesome. Mind you I quite like some of the spin offs, where as dirge of cerberus was absolute shit and Final Fantasy VII is my favorite game ever which they are now fucking up. Please Hironobu! COME BACK!!!
RamenKingRoshi @ May 11th 2007 2:26PM
I'd like to be optimistic about this, but I'm not sure how good it'll be. I've wanted this for years because I am an unabashedly shameful Final Fantasy Fan. However, looking back at games like The Bouncer and Ehrgeiz leave one cautiously optimistic, with emphasis on the caution. If it's pulled off in a way similar to smash brothers or Power Stone or the kinds in the genre, I can see it working IF the characters fight and maneuver like they're meant to. If they can balance it like SSBM I'm in. If not, I'd prefer them not ruining some of my favorite characters (on that note I call dibs on playing Zidane, Vincent, Auron and Locke)
Christopher7xii @ May 11th 2007 2:52PM
"It hasnt been the same since it was just squaresoft"
so true. FFX-2 was the beginning of the end.
Akiata @ May 15th 2007 5:49PM
I think it's a decent idea. Just making a game to crossover all the characters. The Tales of.. series is going to, albeit an RPG format. It's still an idea I'm sure a lot of people will like. Who knows maybe one day they will do an RPG crossover.
Audhulma @ May 12th 2007 11:17AM
@ CJC- I want to say that it's Cecil, but when I first looked at him I thought Kain. But Kain's a lancer and this fellow is using a sword. So basically, it probably is Cecil.
Titris @ May 12th 2007 10:05PM
Cecil in Dark Knight Form. No doubt about it. Wonder if he'll have Pally form to? =P That would make me buy it =D
naznatips @ May 13th 2007 7:04PM
I'm sorry, call me a pessimist, but I just can't see how this can possibly be good. For one thing, 90% of FF main characters do nothing but the same damn diagonal slash move with a sword that looks slightly different (I swear the recycled that animation from FFVII through FFX). So, unless they basically just invent fighting styles for the main characters, using any of them will blow. Then again, Tidus's attacks could just be whining and bitching, and Vaan could go cry in a corner while his significantly more awesome allies do the fighting for him. Seriously though the only characters that ever have any real difference is the allies, and even they don't. Every game has: white magic user, summoner (often combined with main character or one of the others), sword fighter, alternate sword fighter, black magic user, crappy thief character no one uses. Yes there is a little bit of change in this (and a lot in FFXII with no set classes), but be honest people: As great as Final Fantasy is, do any of the elements of the universe seem like good things for a BRAWLER?
that guy @ May 13th 2007 7:54PM
"Could Tidus and Vaan even manage to injure each other?"
no. they would be to busy dicusing hair styles and makeup to actualy get any fighting done.
Xian @ May 17th 2007 9:35PM
It's so Ehrgeiz in PSP.
Eudevie @ May 21st 2007 4:10PM
I'd really love to play this game! there are some battles I'd try, if they have them:
Zidane VS Locke
Kefka VS Sephiroth
Sabin VS Zell
Terra VS Lulu
Shadow VS Yuffie
and so on. odd thing is, why do they have Kuja in there? it doesn't seem like he'd be able to stand up to much in close quarters combat... technically, non-trance form, one good hit from Zidane SHOULD take him out. Mages have low HP VS warriors usually.(Then again, in Flyff...Mages>Mercs)
Also, the Cross-slashing yaoi fangirls will go nuts here. though, i'm not complaining.*Kuja x Sephiroth shipper. why? I dunno. It could work.*
FFLeader @ Jun 2nd 2007 12:07AM
This should be rather interesting. Can't get enough Final Fantasy!
And, uh, that's quite clearly Kuja in the picture.
Zekten @ Jun 4th 2007 12:25AM
What I can't help but wonder is if there will be some FFs omitted. I mean, I'd be curious if they put FF5 into the mix. While bringing that up, the characters have two different appearances, let alone their alternate job classes.
I don't know. I only think about this since I quite like Faris and I'm curious to which design they'd choose. Purple haired or blond.
