Nerfing your DS with a case
Nerfing usually has a negative connotation in gamer society; however, this is one nerfing we'd be happy to take. Unlike the utterly useless Wii peripherals created by Nerf, this DS Lite case is pure squishy goodness. Sister-site DSFanboy brings us the details on this case that you just want to fit your DS snugly into and drop on the ground to see if it breaks (but seriously, don't do that). The case retails for $12.99 and gives some extra girth to the DS allowing gamers with big hands to reduce those lovely hand cramps some experience.
PDP, the company that makes the product, says that the cases are available in most major electronic store outlets -- including Wal-Mart. If you're a commuter this may be a great case to have when dropping your DS into your bag. It's also probably good for you gamer parents that just can't trust your kid not to break your toy.

I saw this in a Best Buy yesterday, and immediately wondered what genius could market a peripheral that turns a DS Lite into a DS Phat.

Looks like that back of the DS (hinged area) isn't protected much.
I keep my DS in my backpack for over a year and bang that bag around, no problems yet. I think it's time for a new screen protector. Too much Elite Beat Agents.

What game is that?!?
I thought it was Super Mario Land 2 for the OG GameBoy at first...but now I have no clue

looks like its perfect for short bus riders.

I gotta get one of these! I'm one of the hand-crampers and this looks like it will help. Question is, has anyone seen one in a store yet?
tru @ May 9th 2007 1:30PM
It looks like an M3 simply DS cart running an emulator. I've been thinking of getting one since they use microSD memory and I have one for my phone already.

According to the DS Fanboy posting, people have seen them all over in different colors in Best Buy. I'm sure it can be found in other major retailers like Target and Walmart.

Ok, sort of answering my own question:

According to this, they will ship at the beginning of June.

that game is frustrating as hell! damn monkey!
teitoku @ May 9th 2007 1:42PM
It's not a ROM of SML2; it's using both screens. What homebrew game is it?

I work at a Best Buy, and we've had them readily available for about a week now, I also purchased one on sight, and it's amazing. So far I'm only seeing green and orange for colors, thought he backof the box shows blue, red, black, and green.

Despite how awesome this looks and performs, wouldn't this dramatically increase the heat on the inside of your system? Nerf material is just about the best insulator.
Nick Spacek @ May 9th 2007 2:25PM
I was thinking a while back how it would be neat to write some homebrew party games, like a Catch Phrase clone. Our games of that get pretty frantic and this seems like it could be a great solution when tossing the DS around.
I'd still be afraid to: I have flashbacks of the Catch Phrase thing getting dropped, cracking open, and spewing its innards (in this case just the paper card :) )

Just another example of how much GameStop sucks.
"Colors are chosen at random when shipped."
That just says that they make so much money and have such a corner on the market, that they don't need to actually sell things properly. What guy would actually order this from them with the chance of getting a pink one?
JodyAnthony @ May 9th 2007 3:32PM
@fwacce - the guy thats secure enough in his manhood to not worry about carrying something pink.
Thad @ May 9th 2007 3:54PM
I just had to get my original-model DS repaired because the top screen cracked. Anybody have any suggestions for something similar for the bigger model?
bobartig @ May 9th 2007 4:15PM
@ 14.. I don't think heat is an issue with the DS. It's got a relatively low clock speed cpu (or a pair of ARMs, iirc, but I don't really know) and not a lot else going on. Have you ever experienced a DS even getting warm, I mean, besides from sweaty hands during an intense round of Mario Kart?
I am surprised that there weren't larger nerf buttons to go over the shoulder buttons. I kind of have a hard time with them, and making them a bit more accessible would have been a nice design to go with the extra 'hand-hold' girth this case adds.

Wish I could agree with you on this one... but I have a BLACK Ds Lite. Black and pink does clash no matter how much Hot Topic tries to convince you of the opposite. If I buy this, the only version that will look good with my DS is Black. A preference in a color does not indicate someone is insecure, just that he has a prefernce in a color. Of course, I'm one of the people who NEEDED to import a white PSP so...
Rubang B @ May 9th 2007 4:49PM
I bought a regular grey launch DS, and then got the candy pink Japanese import, then I got the white DS Lite and got pissed when the coral pink and noble pink (Japanese import) Lites came out. I don't want to buy a 5th DS (I got pearl pink (US only) for my girlfriend), so I just settled for getting the pink ewin rumble pak in my white DS Lite to make it just a little pink. I'm actually considering Nerfing my DS and I'd have to go to Best Buy to be sure I DO get the pink one.
And now I kinda wish I had a black DS with pink rumble pak, pink stylus, and pink Nerf case. Pink and black work together way better than pink and white do, methinks.

"Nerfing usually has a negative connotation in gamer society..."
What's negative about shooting nerfs in Star Wars: Galactic Battlegroungd? Unless...PETA has found out our secret!

"What's negative about shooting nerfs in Star Wars: Galactic Battlegroungd? Unless...PETA has found out our secret!"
Nerfing as a gamer term usually refers to game balancing changes made to games and removing a massive amount of the advantage a particular class in a game has. In other words, almost as if the dangerous item has been covered by soft, cushy nerf material. For examples...
"Did you see the latest Starcraft patch totally nerfed the splash damage of Seige Tanks?"
"I'm going to have to reroll. The latest WOW patch nerf'd my Paladin hardcore."
"God, Halo 2 completely nerfed the pistol!"
Psaakyrn @ May 9th 2007 6:17PM
But truthfully though, I've dropped my DS (not lite) twice, still plays fine, only have scratches on the edges where it hit the ground.
Rubang B @ May 9th 2007 7:57PM
Sheppy doesn't get the joke. He's a scruffy looking nerf herder.
Joshua Trigsted @ May 10th 2007 1:08PM
I had no idea the "hand-cramp" issue is well known now. I had to give up playing the DS Fat because it was giving me something that felt a lot like carpal tunnel. My hands would ache after playing for about 45 minutes and the ache wouldn't go away for hours. It's a class action waiting to happen!!!
Lisa @ Aug 2nd 2007 9:52AM
Can someone tell me the different between coral pink and candy pink? Some photos of the coral pink DS Lite make it look pearlized, but then I saw one photo that made the pink DS lite look like a matte, darker pink.
