Soul Calibur Legends, an action-adventure spin-off of the Namco Bandai fighting series, has been confirmed by
Famitsu. First
hinted at by IGN earlier this week,
1UP explains that
Legends will be a Wii-exclusive "diversion," perhaps occupying the idle time between its release and the next 'real'
Soul Calibur sequel.
Legends will apparently focus on
Siegfried, taking it back to the 16th century, but expect many of the franchise faces to pop up and compete for playing time. Namco Bandai has little else to reveal at this stage in development, aside from vague confirmation that the control scheme will use both the
Wiimote and
Nunchuk -- so be careful not to get tangled while swingin' your "Snake Sword."
Will
Legends successfully spin off from its fighting roots as
Shaolin Monks managed to do? Or might it eventually be tucked inside the closet next to
Death by Degrees? Too early to call. At least we won't be playing
dress-up at a beach resort.

I have a bad feeling about this.
AJ Vaynerchuk @ May 9th 2007 3:31PM
That bad feeling probably has something to do with the fact that Soul Calibur is now going to be an adventure game instead of fighting. Keep it fighting!

oh man. what a promising franchising. No idea why this game is Wii exclusive, but let's hope they don't ruin a otherwise fantastic series.
and are you telling me that screenshot is coming from Wii? :)
Jack of No Trades @ May 9th 2007 3:36PM

If the game looks like that on the Wii I will not flame anymore. I like the color variety.
Blazur @ May 9th 2007 3:41PM
Highly doubt a Wii is capable of anything that graphically stunning.
Keif @ May 9th 2007 3:41PM
thats a painting, not a screenshot
Sean D. @ May 9th 2007 3:43PM
Screenshot? No, that's concept art!
sheppy @ May 9th 2007 3:53PM
Somehow... I can imagine all this being is applying Sould Calibur characters to Dynasty Warriors gameplay. If they can get it right like Gundam Musuo and Drakengard, I'm all for it although constantly swishing my arm about could get tiring. But if they have ass it like Kingdom Under Fire, Full Metal Alchemist, and N3.... all hope is lost.
LongshotX @ May 9th 2007 3:58PM
I love Soul Calibur to death. It is one of my top 10 greatest games of all time. I remember booting it up on my Dreamcast as my first DC game and it was absolutely stunning. Arguably, the best weapons based, fighter even, I have ever played. I'll never forget the sensation of beating the computer on the hardest setting and friends to death with Ivy. To see Soul Calibur on the Wii is very disappointing. The essence of Soul Calibur lied in its extremely polished combat, extremely tight and responsive controls, graphics engine, interesting story and memorable characters. I don't mean to start a flame war but thus far the Wii has proved that is incapable of creating a true next-gen successor to Soul Calibur III. Soul Calibur is a Fighter. Sure new elements to enhance the game should be implemented, but never should the core of Soul Calibur be removed in place of an adventure game. I know I am pre-judging the game before it even comes out but the concept of Soul Calibur Legends just sounds terrible.
Jonathan Tran @ May 9th 2007 3:58PM
Of course this game will be awesome.
Just think of how well Mortal Kombat did when it changed to an adventure/rpg. Right? Right?
And uh, before you start saying Wii can't handle mediocre shiny graphics, try watching gameplay of Umbrella Chronicles, Project Hammer, and Metroid Prime 3
I do honestly think this game could be good.
aux @ May 9th 2007 4:08PM
You'd think with the remote and nunchuk, they'd let you play as Maxi
Jonathan Tran @ May 9th 2007 4:11PM
Well, it's probably nunchuck = move and jump etc, wiimote = attack/block
Fernando Rocker @ May 9th 2007 4:14PM
@Jonathan Tran
Of course the Wii can handle very amazing graphics... I mean, look Soul Calibur II for Gamecube, its have the best graphics on a Soul Calibur game (not like the shitty PS2 version)...
Mediocre graphics its not fault of the Wii, its that developers are lazy... they just want quick money with the Wii. Aamzing titles from the Wii: Rogue Leader, F Zero, Metroid Prime I and II, Star Fox Adventures, Resident Evil 4, Soul calibur, Viewtiful Joe... even Paper Mario for Gamecube looks a lot better than Super Paper Mario...
I dont know what happen to developers... why they dont want to do some quality games... I dont get it.
Fernando Rocker @ May 9th 2007 4:15PM
I mean, amazing games from Gamecube...
Jack of No Trades @ May 9th 2007 4:19PM
@Fernando Rocker
Its simple! If you buy a casual console you will get games that cater to casual gamers. Games that don't rely on graphics. Graphics may not be everything but they play a huge part in how the game is fun.
kingofwale @ May 9th 2007 4:22PM
@Fernando Rocker
pfft, Tomato, To-MA-to. ;)
I think it's ridiculous for people to say Nintendo is capable of great graphics when their examples are from games NOT YET RELEASED!
how would you know if the real game is as good?
Let's wait until they actually come out first, please. For now, the best graphic is on RE4 for Wii 0.5
tcc3 @ May 9th 2007 4:23PM
'Fraid not Fernando. The xbox version blew it away. Especially since it output 720p.
I owned both versions. I bought the Gamecube version for Link, but had to get the Xbox version for the superior graphics. Damn that was a good lookin game.
Cant wait for SC4 on 360.
Jack of No Trades @ May 9th 2007 4:23PM
Thats why developers are lazy with the wii. They don't need to work as hard to pump out a game to make people happy. Simple people are happy with simple pleasures.
Country boy will enjoy himself fishing of the back of his rusty Ford's tailgate while a City boy needs a Club and a Corvette.
Whirlo @ May 9th 2007 4:26PM
Looks like Namco just wanted to use an already established series to make a game about swinging a big ass sword around with the wii-remote. Sounds allright to me, so long as it dosn't completely suck.
Here's hoping to some more fun classic Namco references! *crosses fingers for Gilgamesh costume*
JodyAnthony @ May 9th 2007 4:28PM
only douchebags drive corvettes.
it's all about the "le car", baby.
spot778 @ May 9th 2007 4:41PM
Considering SC2 sold significantly better on the Game Cube then any other platform this a no-brainer.
Beans @ May 9th 2007 4:46PM
"5. Highly doubt a Wii is capable of anything that graphically stunning."
Uh, I hope you aren't talking about the artwork screen shot. Is the piece in related to this new game? In any case, I've seen better visuals from the ps2! chomon, dude!
tcc3 @ May 9th 2007 4:55PM
Spot, I'll bet that was due to Link. Thats why I bough the GC version.
The other exclusive characters were lame.
Almack64 @ May 9th 2007 4:58PM
Soul Calibur is by far my favorite fighter of all time. It was one of the reasons I bought a DC and one of the first games I got on the GC. (Funny thing I actually didn't like Link in it. He didn't seemed balanced with the other characters)
I always thought a real adventure mode would be awesome considering they always seemed to try to make the story seem important but it was still a fighter. It made the missions type mode seem like they wanted to be adventure modes but not really.
In anycase the idea excites me but I much rather play as Kilik than Siegfried. Siegfried/Nightmare was always just too slow for me.
Aex @ May 9th 2007 5:01PM
@JodyAnthony
Nah, Corvettes are in the top tier of American made cars. Mustangs and Dodges are for the douches. Chevy for Life!
rinks @ May 9th 2007 5:12PM
This should be great. If only the Wii had the graphical horsepower of, say, the Gamecube. Then we'd really be playing with power.
samfish @ May 9th 2007 5:08PM
Y'all can HAVE your precious Corvettes, Mustangs and Vipers.
I'LL be tooling around in my Tesla Roadster. That's a REAL man's car.
...or my Batmobile. My Batmobile is nice, too.
OhJustSomeRandomGuy @ May 9th 2007 5:13PM
I was intrigued until I saw two things that killed it:
Siegfried and Wii.
Darkness @ May 9th 2007 5:15PM
I always wanted Namco to expand the adventure portion of the games. Especially the Soul Calibur 2 adventure mode. If they do something like that with lots of new moves, skills, leveling up, and even some co-op, then I'm on this like white on rice. I really don't care what it looks like graphically, as anything that's close to the Gamecube version in graphic quality if fine by me. Just make sure it's fun and have lots of ass kickin' going on.
Next-Gen-Gamer @ May 9th 2007 5:17PM
"and are you telling me that screenshot is coming from Wii? :)"
Its not even a screenshot.
"I think it's ridiculous for people to say Nintendo is capable of great graphics when their examples are from games NOT YET RELEASED!"
That's the point. The graphics on some of these games look really good, and they're not even finished yet. Unlike your favorite console, these are real in-game graphics, and not that pre-rendered crap.
"how would you know if the real game is as good?"
You just made a similar generalization over at PS3Fanboy.com about how the Wiimote doesn't equal mouse/keyboard on C&C3. How would you know if the real game is as good? At least this person is talking about a game that exists. You spoke of a game that, as of now, doesn't even exist.
Shagittarius @ May 9th 2007 5:37PM
Next-Gen-Gamer meet the Next-Gen-Loser (Wii). I'm sure you two will get along swimmingly.
Jake @ May 9th 2007 5:38PM
My guess is this won't turn out to be anything special. Here's to hoping it turns out great. Cheers!
I'm still very gun shy about the quality of 3rd party games on a nintendo console. The history isn't great.
Kye @ May 9th 2007 5:38PM

Please change it to Mitsurugi.

Right. Because hardware/software sales figures are all lies.
Mr Khan @ May 9th 2007 5:50PM
Looks like a good idea, i always felt the game would've done great as an adventure title anyway, just depends on how they craft the whole world
I would trust Namco to do a good job
Damn the haters are out in force today
kingofwale @ May 9th 2007 5:56PM
>Right. Because hardware/software sales figures are all lies.
success of a console is based on early success of sale number? Well, that would explain why Spiderman 3 is such an fantastic game.
Ken @ May 9th 2007 5:58PM
This'll be the next 200+ comment post! I can feel it, you know why?
It has something good about the Wii. And all the PS3Fanboys/360Fanboys just don't like that the Wii is getting all the attention lately.
Don't worry PS3Fanboys, Sony will do something stupid and make us talk about you again.
And 360Fanboys, we'll continue to talk about the hardware faults of your 360. Red Ring of Death? Oh, oops... superior hardware right there. (overpriced HDD anyone?) ;)
Ian Von Porter @ May 9th 2007 6:00PM
They get to recycle the last gen game assets for the Wii adventure.. as opposed to making a new fighting game. Then, they develop a proper SC for PS3/360.
Same thing happened with RE5 vs Chronicles.. its a pattern, dont you see?
kingofwale @ May 9th 2007 6:02PM
@Ken
awww, the classic Mom telling the kid the reason he/she got pick on because others are jealous.
;)
It's not hard to make a list of what you like and hate about Nintendo. I think the fact that the media as a whole is so in love with it becomes one reason why some people show so much hate for it.
Ken @ May 9th 2007 6:06PM
@kingofwale
I don't think it's jealousy, because it happens from the same 4 people (you know who you are).

I was under the assumption Wii was more powerful than the Cube. I don't see the graphical "bump" that Metroid should have gotten on a supposedly next gen console that is supposedly more powerful than its predecessor.
And the Gamecube did not sale the most copies of Soul Calibur II.
Ps2 1.8 million
Gamecube 1.5 million

That Metroid Prime 3 screenshots are very old... that was an image taken from a modified Metroid Prime 2 engine, its not the engine that we will see in the final edition.

Wanna bet it is? How much more powerful do you think the Wii is compared to the Cube? I'll tell you a little secret, it ain't by much.

@ LongShotX
your sources, please?
GC has 2x the VRAM than GC, although only about 80 Mhz more GPU clock speed
And yes, Fernando is right. The existing screens of MP3 were before the current graphical overhaul (which in turn is the reason for its delay)

Hopefully, this doesn't distract the devteam from a proper SC sequel for the Xbox 360. There, I said it. I'm convinced that after SCIII flopped, that the next one will go multiplatform again. It has to.

"Wanna bet it is? How much more powerful do you think the Wii is compared to the Cube? I'll tell you a little secret, it ain't by much."
Longshot, exactly what are you trying to prove? Something we already know? Why even beat this dead horse? Just let it die and play something else. I see no point in getting into this discussion especially since you're against the Wii. Just let it die, man. You'll be doing yourself and everyone else a favor.
Also, who cares whether it's more powerful than a GameCube? It doesn't matter since none of us can do anything about it. If you don't like it, just don't buy it. It's pretty simple.
