PS3 Saints Row pimp-slapped and capped, sequel in works
Life ain't easy in the ghetto. THQ announced today that they are canceling the PS3 version of Saints Row and diverting those funds into a sequel for Xbox 360 and PS3. The sequel is scheduled for a 2008 release.THQ CEO Brian Farrell told NextGen, "We've done great things for our brands by putting them in the right time frame ... The most important thing for the Saints Row franchise is to have a simultaneous shipment into a larger installed base next year. That's what we're looking for with Saints Row 2."
Saints Row ended up becoming a sleeper hit with 1.4 million units shipped for Xbox 360. The game recently became a platinum hit for the console and costs $29.99. Saints Row surprisingly elevated the GTA-style sandbox game. In the wake of GTA IV's release later this year it'll be interesting to see if Saints Row II can top it in 2008.

after GTA4 out on both consoles, I wonder how many Saint Row 2 will sell.
Montana @ May 10th 2007 10:47PM
Saints Row is the best copy-cat GTA out there, I think most people would agree with this. Some guy made a video-comparison of both games here:

Its a pretty neat thing to do, i reckon.
Ghost @ May 10th 2007 10:57PM
Fuck!
It wont sell anything after GTA IV is out.
Idiots.
Next-Gen-Gamer @ May 10th 2007 10:59PM
Everyone acts like its launching along side GTAIV. The game will sell. Not as much as the first game, but it will sell.
Strike Man @ May 10th 2007 11:04PM
Montana, please stop with the senseless spam. If the internets thought your video was funny, WE'D pass it along to our friends ourselves...
Jason @ May 10th 2007 11:18PM
HAHAHA! The PS3's install base is so small, it's not even worth doing a port for! Better to wait until Lair and some other junk has sold some units, eh? You're not alone THQ, not by a long shot!
wackychan @ May 10th 2007 11:38PM
This game wont be worth it after gta4 is out. The first one was worth a rent though, maybe this will will be.

I think thats a good move. Saints row to me was more fun then any of the GTA3 + series (gta 1 and 2 with online multiplayer are still the king of all GTA games).
Saints row was good single player and somewhate decent multiplayer. The multi needed more maps and a few more modes tho (and not a 100% lag tastic adventure for 2 months until they finally patched it)
Im still waiting for a sandbox game with city wide multiplayer modes. So far, the closest thing to deliever is crackdown with the new DLC that has all those new modes, unfortunetly its all limited to 2 players. The day they make the open sandbox game with 12+ players with CTf, deathmatch and other modes will be the day of all days in gaming.
Lets hope GTA 4 delivers on this front. but somehow I doubt GTA4 will have a multiplayer. Maybe saints row 2 can do it right.
EMaster @ May 10th 2007 11:40PM
Why is everyone acting like they are so shocked? I saw this coming. It truly is a better idea to take the horrendously large amount of money it takes to port a game from 360 to PS3 (on top of that well over a year after the original has come out) and rather invest it into making a sequel that will attract far more consumers.
Piemaster @ May 10th 2007 11:50PM
I dunno, if they don't fix the lock-on system or remove it completely from GTAVI, add difficulty settings or at least a way to restore health, Saints Row 2 could do well. Everyone says GTA is so great, but it has tons of glaring flaws.
mushiking @ May 10th 2007 11:52PM
i don't see how this means anything in the long run. face people, no one would have bought it. the only reason Saint's Row sold so well, is cause it had no competition at the time. GTA IV is gonna change that quick. i'm sure THQ knows this, and and decided it was wasn't worth the risk. even if ps3 was flying off shelves, this still would have happened.
Shmil @ May 11th 2007 12:27AM
@ montana
really? is your work that shoddy that you have to trick people into trying to watch it? Congratulations you're the first person to do a freaking 300 parody!!! SOMEONE GET THIS GUY A FREAKING MEDAL!!! HEY EVERYONE THIS GUY'S A FREAKING GENIUS!! HE'S TAKEN A VERY POPULAR, WELL REVIEWED FILM, AND HE'S MADE SOME FUCKING PARODY OF IT, LOOK OUT, MONTANA IS GONNA BE THE NEXT SCORCESE FOR FUCKS SAKE!!!!
now that i've got that out of the way, as much fun as saints row is, gta will always prevail
MosquitoControl @ May 11th 2007 12:28AM
My alliegience is to Saints Row.
GTA3 was a ton of fun. GTA:VC was in improvement. GTA:SA sucked. Too much useless crap added, too many frustrations not fixed, too much added crap caused frustrations.
Saints Row fixed nearly all the frustrations. The combat system was so nice, I won't even play GTA4 if it makes me lock on, particularly if it makes me lock on based on where the model is looking rather than where the camera is aimed.
Jake @ May 11th 2007 12:48AM
So I guess Saint's Row is exclusive again? I thought it was a real fun game. Granted, it wasn't fun enough for me to finish it, but it was still fun.
Ryoga Vee @ May 11th 2007 3:34AM
This of it like this, people like options.
The way most of you sound is like saying "well we already have GTA, so there does not need to be another sand box, urban action street warfare shooter."
That no different than saying, "We have Need for Speed; they don’t need to make Burn Out, GT, PGR, ect..."
Exchange this argument with any FPS and you get the same result.
I personally liked Saint's Row, I even liked Driver: PL, however I DONT like GTA. I like to have choices. Without competition these genres of games will get boring and stale, or do we need another Madden on our hands killing of 2k sports for you all to learn why competition is healthy?
mushiking @ May 11th 2007 3:55AM
@15
so wait for Saint's Row 2. why the hell would you wanna play a year old game?
Ryoga Vee @ May 11th 2007 4:36AM
@16
You telling me you have never played a game over a year old?
You must not have ever owned any Nintendo software.
Johnny @ May 11th 2007 6:37AM
I hate how people discount Saints row cuzz they're on GTA's nuts.
Saints Row has matched GTA feature for feature and then atop that...added more or simply improved them.
If anything the next GTA will be a clone of saints row.
and both games will try out crackdown style MP.
sheppy @ May 11th 2007 9:13AM
*sigh*
The humor in GTA was cheeky and fun. Saints Rows humor equated to "if we say cum, people will laugh, right?" The parts they wanted to be funny seemed tragic and sad. The parts they wanted serious, ended up funny because it's like their entire basis for urban culture came from Nelly videos.
Regardless, Saints was the only sandbox game I beat.
Personally, real motivation for this move? Last time I checked, Saints Row had been pushed back to October....
HaloBreaker @ May 11th 2007 11:33AM
I'll be the total opposite of this comment page and say I enjoyed both the GTA series since, (never played London though) and I enjoyed saints row.
I think I usually fall right in the middle of Joystiq's arguments because I'm a PC gamer. =\
konajinx @ May 11th 2007 12:12PM
Saints Row was/is a lot of fun and definitely better than GTA:SA. That game larded on too much superfluous crap, and the graphics seemed to take a hit as well. Unfortunately, I've had to review both GTA:VCS and GTA:LCS for the PS2 and they were total drags. Granted, they were just crappy PSP ports (and it showed), but GTAIV better deliver, because the series is beyond getting stale. Saints Row may have been a copycat, but it managed to inject a freshness into the open sandbox genre that GTA hasn't been able to muster in a long time.
Poisoned Al @ May 11th 2007 1:28PM
Humm, well the PC version of GTA:SA was okay. Having the mouse meant no lock on rubbish and almost all the graphics were high rez via VGA and you could see for miles on a half descent PC. PC GTA:SA is a lot better then Saints Row, but IMO Saint Row is better then the pig ugly PS2 version of GTA:SA.
I have the feeling that people here rate SR so highly is because it was the first real sandbox game for the next-gen consoles and nothing more. Don't get me wrong, SR is a good game but it didn't blow me away. Stuff blowing up rocked tho.
Ryan @ May 11th 2007 10:17PM
So is bashing San Andreas like the "in" thing to do now? Are you people that stupid? Complaints were few and far between about the game's graphics back when the first screens came up in the summer of 2004. People were more interested about the gameplay, the large scale of the map, and the various new modes and features. Now a game comes out with average graphics and people call it a piece of shit. I really hope this isn't where the majority of the gaming community is headed. Yeah, games can look really good now. We know. But don't use that as the first thing to critique when learning about a game. But I'm sure in 2010, there will be some loser saying "IMO Saints Row 4 is better then that pig ugly 360 version of GTA:IV they made back then."
