SimCity DS footage, June release
Stills? We don't need no stinking stills! Show us some action! EA has released the first trailer for SimCity DS. If you've ever played SimCity then you know what you're in for, but it's interesting to see some arcade-style mechanics being brought into the mix. Blowing out fires with the mic, attacking the monster with the stylus. EA is sticking with an "around June" date for release. Sun, surf, sand and SimCity DS. Summer is going to be nice.
After the break as an added bonus is the pretty spiffy Japanese commercial.

Hearing City in japanese is great
Rod Munch @ May 10th 2007 11:26PM
Sim City DS looks like its going to be pretty fun. I always liked Sim City games but never really had enough attention span to play them properly, so I don't know whether I want this game or not.
Mrfreezie @ May 10th 2007 11:28PM
Is this June release date for America? Sorry, the whole Japanese commercial confused me.
mike @ May 10th 2007 11:31PM
that looked like crap. I was expecting fun like sim city 2000. Not donkey kong and blowing on my ds like an idiot.
Ken @ May 10th 2007 11:44PM

I don't even think you watched it. Wow... You really are a loser. I hope you die of cancer.
Okay that was harsh, I'm sorry.
Xbox MAN FTW @ May 11th 2007 12:10AM
lol Ken wtf?
JeffyP00 @ May 11th 2007 12:25AM
How does blowing out fires affect the city dynamics of having multiple and well placed fire departments? That seems like a weird change. Overall though, this looks like a great adaptation.
waves @ May 11th 2007 12:27AM
I really don't like having to blow on my DS on the subway.
Shmil @ May 11th 2007 12:31AM
@ ken
you said what many of us wanted to say
but then you apologized, thus making you the bigger man
kingofwale @ May 11th 2007 1:29AM
hmmm.. one of the worst half-assed apology after one of the most disrespectful to say to anybody who had friend/family member died from a horrible disease. And it makes him a "BETTER" man?
Gosh, if only Hitler could utter than magic world, who would care if millions had died, right?
Frankly anybody who is IMCAPABLE of a decent comeback and has to throw the whole "loser" or "wish you die of cancer" crap is pathetic, if you don't agree with him, prove him wrong.
back to the game, graphics look crappy, no idea why there was a giant monkey there other than the fact to milk Donkey Kong further, Pray they keep all the mechanics that made Sim City great and Oh, this game will sell like hot cakes anyway, so who the hell cares.

Sorry, but I'm afraid I need to invoke Godwin's Law. You lose, Kingofwale.
Bender @ May 11th 2007 2:19AM
I bought the japanese version of this and in my opinion it's not a great way to play simcity.
Firstly, the editing and playing modes are done seperately, you cannot actually make changes to your city at the same time as seeing it in action (the game pauses while you build things on the bottom screen, then you apply them and it starts again).
Furthermore, it lacks the precision or detail of the PC outings of Simcity 2000 or 3000.
Lastly, it's slow! It seems to take forever to do some simply things.
After saying all of that, the game is in japanese, and my japanese skills aren't that great - there are many parts I could not fully understand. Perhaps the english release will be better and fill in the gaps I've found from the Japanese version.
Kite @ May 11th 2007 2:59AM
I like this, but I am personally more excited for anno 1702 DS.
Just my opinion...
Aex @ May 11th 2007 3:11AM
If I have ever said something bad about this game, I take it all back and apologize. This looks awesome! Maybe I'll finally buy another game for my DS!
Stef Geiger @ May 11th 2007 3:22AM
Blowing on the DS to put out fires? You know, I hear that if you light a candle or match and blow on it, you can make it go out too, and the polygon count is higher.
How is it that people don't see stuff like this, the stylus and the Wii controller as gimmicky? Oh, there's pretty much only one shallow application for this "feature", but it's Nintendo, so it's genius!
Next-Gen-Gamer @ May 11th 2007 3:25AM
"Sorry, but I'm afraid I need to invoke Godwin's Law. You lose, Kingofwale."
Its funny because its true.
Rubang B @ May 11th 2007 3:29AM
It's not genius because it's Nintendo; it's genius because it's Will Wright. I can like more than one thing, right?
ill trooper @ May 11th 2007 4:32AM
kingofwhale: sounds like Shmil's saying that by apologizing he's the 'better man' than any of us out here who would have left it at 'die, #4, DIE,' not that he's a bigger man than Mike, who the insult was directed at...
relaxo
The 84th @ May 11th 2007 8:44AM
seems like the land is all flat, kind of takes some fun away from modern sim city games, and youd figure the ds could handle it fine (the snes did with 2000).
JodyAnthony @ May 11th 2007 8:50AM
my god you people complain about everything
Colin @ May 11th 2007 9:23AM
Well there is one park I'm never visiting...what is with the adult playing DS in a kids park...are DSs the next candy? Freaking perve.
As for the game...meh. Doesn't seem to add anything to the original Sim City (so its DK instead of Godzilla busting up your city...big deal) so I wouldn't be in the market for this unless it as a $20 game or less. And yes...blowing on a game machine is assinine if you are over the age of maybe six. Can you turn that feature off?
The 84th @ May 11th 2007 9:32AM
#20, if you were referring to my comment on the terrain, then i have to ask if you've ever played simcity. the terrain is what adds the most challenge to the game, as well as giving each city a different look and variety, with just flat land, every city will look the same and it will get boring. its very important to simcity games, so important that simcity 4 revolved around the new terrain engine and thats really the improvement that made it better then its predecessors.
JodyAnthony @ May 11th 2007 9:49AM
no, the terrain comment makes perfect sense. I was more talking about the people saying "blowing on the ds!??! I'm not doing that! Giant gorilla!? lame! dumb dumb dummydumbdumb!"
tycho81 @ May 11th 2007 9:58AM
This looks great. I've played the sim games from the start. Does anyone specifically remember SimEarth? awesome. anyway, it's a fun diversion on the go, it's something to work at.
To those bad mouthing it. ie. "blowing on it is dumb and the stylus is gimmicky". - if you don't like it. don't play it. if you think it's gimmicky. why do you have a DS? if you don't have a DS and don't like it. then the opinion is worth squat.
Milking DK (it's KING KONG!!. gah!).
also. there are a lot more adults playing video games these days. why not play it in a park. it's a nice day, can sit outside. or is sitting in a dark, dank, lonely basement more to your liking?
granted it could be better in some respects, but as a reality check people. IT'S A DS!!! if you want the original. play it on pc. this is portable. they probably "could" have made it more involved. but that wouldn't lend well to the playing circumstances of a handheld. sigh.
I might actually buy this game. I loved the originals. this would be a nice taste of that while I'm on the subway.
and I don't really care what people think of me blowing into it. the world is-a-changin'
JodyAnthony @ May 11th 2007 10:08AM
thank you tycho81 for actually making sense.
Colin @ May 11th 2007 11:14AM
@tycho81
Yes..been playing since Atari ST days and the video at least doesn't seem to have progressed much from then. The DS is capable of MUCH more and this doesn't look like it justifies a full price (EA milking a franchise...who would think of that).
And yes, there are many non kids playing the DS and that is exactly why the sillyness of blowing on the machine should be optional in games.
JodyAnthony @ May 11th 2007 11:48AM
Colin, I'm not a kid and I have no problem blowing on the DS microphone. Maybe people should just stop being so stuck up and (gasp) have fun with their games
required @ May 11th 2007 11:51AM
in the real world: wind + fire = much bigger fire
perhaps nintendo could implement a spit censor for the ds lite advanced micro
Ken @ May 11th 2007 1:45PM
@kingofwale
Sorry. Didn't realize YOU of all people would be so touchy.
Relax, I don't actually want the guy to die from cancer. That'd be harsh, which is why I apologized.
Jamie @ May 11th 2007 1:49PM
In the real world you're not the major of your own city, now, are you? Nor does a giant freaking gorilla come to attack every now and then.
Colin @ May 11th 2007 2:55PM
@Jody...
So asking game developers to give the OPTION of not blowing/licking/yelling at the DS is being 'stuck up'?
Oh well...guess I'm stuck up then.
JodyAnthony @ May 11th 2007 3:08PM
@Colin: Yes.
Rubang B @ May 11th 2007 4:21PM
I played SimEarth!
And I play my DS on the train every day (in the U.S., not Japan, oooooh), whether I have to blow on a game or not. If I blow on a game, people look and maybe ask what I'm playing (rarely), and I show them and they get interested.
Except for this one time where I got beat up for blowing on my DS in public. Yeah...
hurt138 @ May 11th 2007 8:30PM
I am really starting to dislike how everything has to use the stylus and have some blow feature on the ds. Why cant they get back to just making a solid game and use the stuff if it is needed, not use it just cause it is there. SNES style controls/gameplay on starfox ds would have made that game great, but we got zero gravity MPH.
