Yeah, sucks pretty much... but I don't mind because:

1. I sold all my gb/gbc games
2. a gb/c emulator for the DS is on the way.

And... is 16 ReAlLy old ?

I keep a Game Boy Color in my bookbag for two games:
Donkey Kong
Metal Gear: Ghost Babel
However, if you've got some way of running GBA homebrew, there's something called Goomba Color that does a decent job of running GB(c) games (you do own the originals of course, right?)

Tetris (the original, not that DX crap)

And if anyone can remember Warlocked, that was a great RTS (!) for the GBC.

Anyway, my favorite GB games are:
Link's Awakening
Pokemon Red
Kirby's Dream Land 2
Final Fantasy Adventure

I wouldn't be upset about it if it didn't have a slot that fits the games. The DS is more than powerful enough to play them. It seems like not allowing the DS to play them was a business/marketing decision and not a technical consideration.

The only reason I still have my old (pink) Game Boy Color around is to play Metal Gear Solid. It's hard to find a good source of light to actually see the screen, though - I wonder if the DS's GBA slot would play Game Boy Color games if one were to modify the slot itself?

I still have my SP and all of my original Gameboy games, including Tetris, Link's Awakening, Kirby's Dreamland, Super Mario Land, and Solitaire. The ironic thing is that I actually play these all the time still, I have far more of them than GBA games and they are ten times better in my opinion (except for the remakes like Super Mario 3, that is good). I would absolutely love if my DS played them so I don't also have to lug around two handhelds.

I have been going through all of my old systems and games recently. sopme fantastic stuff amongst them too...

I still have my gameboy pocket and advance as well as my ds, and the advance is the one I pull out for old games, mainly due to the screen being much sharper and clearer compared to the pockets. On th eother hand, it just seems 'right' to play th eold gameboy games on the old gameboy and advance games on the advance - the system just being setup for them, no extra buttons or carts sticking out or anything else.
Admittedly a bit pointless, especially as I use the advance anyway, but it is a nice idea...

I have been meaning to get my hands on as many of the old gameboy games as possible, but haven't really found any sources other than ebay locally...

I actually used my original gameboy recently to play Castlevania Adventure 1 and 2.

Also I've got a Gameboy Camera to toy around with.

As for favorite classics, Link's Awakening is certainly up there as is Tetris.

I personally love my graphite SP and will be holding on to it for years to come. I just hate playing GBA games on my DS, with that extra empty screen staring at me -- the DS is for DS games only. I am very pleased that I can play ALL Gameboy games on my nice, bright GBA.

However, I'm almost embarrassed to admit the number of gameboy-playing devices in my house -- history and backwards compatibility are definitely important around here. We have...a Classic NES GBA SP (original screen era), a Pikachu-face GBA SP (bright screen era), a Japanese "Happy Mario 20" GBA Micro, a Gameboy Player, a Pokemon GBC (for IR capabilities), a Super Gameboy adapter cartridge for the snes, and transfer paks for the N64 (which only kind-of count). And possibly an original-original Gameboy, though I'm not sure if it works anymore.

And yes, #5, the Gameboy Player will play any Gameboy game.

@7 wildweasel:

The reason the DS can't play GBC games is because they got rid of the Z80 CPU from the GBC. However, people have made things like Goomba Color (GBA homebrew, needs something like the ezflashV expansion pack or M3 lite) that emulate the Z80, so you can play your (legally acquired) GBC games on the DS

I had a clear game boy pocket, which was stolen =(, still have a Super Game Boy, and I bought a GBA when they first came out. Games that are worth keeping the GBA around for: Link's Awakening, Oracle of Ages and Seasons, Warioland 2, Donkey Kong Land 1 and 2, and I also have this weird game called Austin Powers Oh Behave! for GBC made by Rockstar. I also keep the GBA around to use the e-reader (yes I bought one).

There are a couple of games I'd like to get back to play at some later date like Super RC Pro Am and possibly another who's name slips my mind at the moment.

*turns over his DS* It's really just the Game Boy Nitro in disquise. *turns over his DS Lite* This would be the Ultra Slim Game Boy Nitro. But I digress. I bought one of the backlit GBA SPs for the sole purpose of being able to play the old games on a better screen. I also own 3 Game Boy Colors, and 2 Game Boy Pockets. The old brick style is in a safe place.

On the chipset - That Z80 work alike is still in the GBA, SP, GBM, DS, and DS Lite. It's because of the higher VOLTAGE that GB/GBC games require that you don't see them on the DS/DS Lite, and GBM. There are GBA games that use the old chipset to store some data, so it has to be there for full compatability with GBA games.

On the Virtual Boy - Mine is sitting right next to my TV looking as awesome as ever. If I had an AC Adaptor for it, I would play it more. Wario Land VB is an understated masterpiece, and the Mario Tennis franchise was born on the Virtual Boy. It's still fun too. Red Alarm is still cool and the fact that there was never a Nester's Funky Bowling 2 breaks my heart every day.

On my favorite GBC Games - There's a few others mentioned, so I will mention some faves that are a little more.. obscure; but still awesome and worth it! Survival Kids, Pokemon Puzzle League, Toki Tori, Shantae, eXtreme Sports (Yay, Wayforward!), Cannon Fodder (With awesome FMV!), and the most excellent Super Mario Bros. Deluxe. What always got me was that the GBC port of DKC was much more faithful and fun than the GBA port. Go figure. Oh! V-Rally 2 GBC was *really* good as was Mickey's Adventure Racing. Rare made that one and it was just.. think R.C. Pro Am + Cobra Triangle + Boulder Dash + good implementation of Disney characters. The sprites in this game are huge too. Oh, Bubble Bobble GBC was wonderful too. I still don't understand how they seem to mess up with Bubble Bobble these days.

On the GB - I own four copies of Face Ball 2000. I'm just going to mention a few more obscure GB titles that I loved to death. In particular: Great Greed and the awesomely understated Megalit. I also found Pyramids of Ra to be awesome.

A lot of old GB games NEED to be remade.. but remade CORRECTLY. When I first saw Mario VS Donkey Kong, it was called "Donkey Kong Plus" and it was a GBA version of the GB classic Donkey Kong 1994 with slightly updated graphics, a build a level option, and all the original levels intact with a bunch of new ones. It was awesome and playable at E3. Then the game disappeared and became Mario VS Donkey Kong and it had all these little "Mini-Marios" and brand new crappy graphics. That broke my heart. When I look at some of the newest games, Kirby's Squeak Squad is THQ brand trash compared to Kirby's Dream Land 2, Wario Land 1 is worlds better looking, playing, and sounding than Wario: Master of Disguise. I liked the "Six Axis" back when it was in KIRBY'S TILT N' TUMBLE and was used for good, not crap. And there is nothing in it's genre on any of the current systems anywhere near as good as Kirby's Blockball. (That was the FIRST GB game to weigh in at 8MegaBits. Huge at the time.) If you have the Super Game Boy, Space Invaders 1994 is the best version of Space Invaders ever created. I remember updating my site years ago ranting on and on about the upcoming Wario Land 2 and how under appreciated Castlevania: Legends really is. Forget IGA. He knows nothing of Castlevania. Sonia Belmont will always be first and all retro-conning will not change that. Shoot.. where is my DS updates to Revenge of the Gator. I remember putting up pictures of all 150 of those "Pocket Monsters" SIX MONTHES before they even had a blip about them in Nintendo Power. Why? I thought the game was pretty cool and was hoping they would bring it here.

I need to break out the wonderful container I have my GB/GBC games in and do some playing. You know.. the last good Duke Nukem game came out on the Game Boy Color... it was also one of the best games Torus Games ever made. Despite all their apologetics for Yoda's Stories, they really were pretty prolific.

The GBC also had the best canceled projects.. Resident Evil, Jazz Jackrabbit, The Legend of Zelda 1 Deluxe, Magi Nation Puzzle Quest, Magi Nation 2, Warlocked 2, Tomb Raider 3, Hungry Are The Dead, and my personal favorite Mythri. I only got to play a few hours into Mythri; but.. you have no idea how much I wish it had been finished. Same with Magi Nation Puzzle Quest. The whole "Tony is the Rage," and "Selphie is the Wisedom" bit that got abandoned. Magi Nation was supposed to be a five game series. That would allow linking back between the five for additional items and to unlock those last few pesky Hyrens. (Core Hyrens.....) I loved how Interactive Imagination decided to fire all the people working on the sequels when they discovered that they were planning on splitting after the last four games were done to create a seperate company. I still have a ton of the cards.. anyone still remember those?

Bah.. I'm rambling... but you know what I'm talking about people, right? Man.. so many awesome little developers died or began to lose their perfect shines on their way from the GBC to the GBA. Wayforward Technologies, Vatical, Digital Eclipse, Crawfish flat out died on the GBA. Digital Eclipse does a lot of stuff; but they are not as revered as they once were. I do not blame that on Jeff Frohwein. Frohwein is still awesome. Wayforward Technologies started to go sour when they left out the most important aspect of their GBC success: The Wayforward Walk. Turn on any of their awesome GBC games like Shantae, Wendy: Every Witch Way, eXtreme Sports, or those two Sabrina games (Which I own) and you will see it. The main female character walks across the screen under the Wayforward logo. Their first GBA project: The Scorpion King has most of what makes them good; but no one walks under the logo. When I first turned it on and noticed that.. my heart sank several feet into the ground and I knew it was over for Wayforward. That said.. they still have a chance to redeem themselves... I may even forgive Matt Bozon for Sigma Star Saga.. if... and only if.. we get Shantae 2 for the DS or the PSP. I know they were looking at the PSP for a while; but after the SSS collapse.. they couldn't have sold the game for a cup of coffee... which is unfortunate. I blame Namco.. not Matt.

Man.. I feel old and grumpy now. O_O

When I was a wee little lad my aunt gave me one of the original GameBoy's that nobody had ever claimed from the lost and found at the school she worked at. It came with Super Mario Land (one of my favorite game's for YEARS after that). Other game's I really got into or spent or just spent a lot of wasted time on were:

Super Mario Land 1 & 2 (2 was AWESOME. The different worlds were very innovative)
007 (I can't remember the full name) - GB
Pokemon Red - GB
Link's Awakening - GB
Final Fantasy Adventure - GB
Tetris - GB

Dragon Warrior 3 - GBC
Metal Gear - GBC

Tony Hawk 2 - GBA
Advance Wars - GBA

Oh hey, Van. Faceball was sick. I had 2 copies and one of those old 4-way multiplayer cords. I guess you could have games of up to 12 or 16 people by hooking together a few cords. Of course the slowdown would have been phenomonal. Speeking of old FPS does anybody remember that Tyranosaurs Tex game that was supposed to come out for GameBoy Color? I was looking forward to that. And that impressive 3D GTA3 like demo for GameBoy Advance? I spent hours on my dial-up connection downloading videos of that to drool over.

I'd just like to add that Slot-1 homebrewers now have Lameboy 0.6, which is -damn compatible-. Sure, it's got a hint of slowdown on some of the more processor-intensive GBC titles like Dragon Warrior III or Bionic Commando, but it's got near-perfect compatibility with the entire GB/GBC library... and the emu itself was released roughly a week ago.

Philip Wesley:

Your information is incorrect. The DS does NOT contain the GBC chipset, and no GBA games made use of the GBC chipset because they were incapable of accessing it. The GBA contained two disparate chipsets. In developing the system the developers were trying to figure out the most intelligent way of having it recognize what sort of game was in there and switch chipsets automatically but couldn't come up with a good software solution. So instead they put a small switch in the corner of the cartridge slot and left a notch in the GBA cartridges in that spot. GBA games would slide past the switch and the system would boot normally. Slip in a GB/GBC game without the notch and it would flip the switch and boot with the GBC chipset. But the two did not communicate with one another in any way.

You may be confusing it with the method Sony used for PS2-to-PSone compatibility where they also threw the old chipset in there, but actually used it AS the I/O processor for the PS2, so PS2 games actually did make use of it, making the lack of it a problem for some games if it were to be removed. But this is not how Nintendo handled things.

I got into GB and GBC, completely skipped GBA/GBA SP/etc and went straight into DSPhat & Lite. Some of my favorite games for GB/GBC were Super Mario Land, Kirby's Dreamland, Kirby Pinball, GB Camera (I even had the printer), Pokemon Blue/Crystal/Pinball, Castlevania 1 & 2, Donkey Kong Land 1 & 2, TMNT: Fall of the Foot Clan, Tiny Toon Adventures 2, and of course Tetris. All of them are still in perfect working order and I could NEVER get rid of them. In retrospect there are a lot of games I wish I'd played, but that's the beauty of keeping old handhelds around. Though...since I got my first DS, I've been getting into GBA games and the only one I've really gotten into so far is Rayman. I'm just glad my dad never got me into any lame girly games like what my little sisters are playing (here's hoping they grow out of it).
