Too bad EA will release only half the game. They'll sit on so much content just to charge 2 bucks for it later on Marketplace. But it does look like a solid game. I haven't played a Tony Hawk in a while.

It would be cool if you could piss people off to the point they chase you and try to fight.

Cool looking game. Would be a nice relaxing experience. Count me in EA.

This looks hot.

The Tony Hawk series (and whatever imitators that were out there) imo was the worst example of gameplay for a simple activity being convoluted into an unnecessarily complex and nonsensical mangle of button mashing and sequence recall. I don't doubt that there are tons of people who enjoys this kind of gameplay, but to me it was about as sensible as playing a driving game that required you to answer math problems in order to shift gears.

I'm sure this series isn't coming anywhere near the wii, but I hope it does well regardless.

id always find myself trying to make simple and clean moves in tony hawk, even though stringing combos is the main aspect of the game.

skate is going to be amazing, the movements and angles capture the true feeling of skating. the controls sure do look intimidating, but then again, skateboarding isn't an easy sport. it's all about practice and repetition, and i'm sure the same satisfaction of landing the trick you've always wanted to nail, would be the same in this game.

then again, this game could suck? nah.

Ah, so after years of being good, now we can look back in anger and decide that Tony Hawk always really sucked, eh? So noted. I mean, don't get me wrong, the excesses of the series got ridiculous after THPS3 it started to fade, and the whole 'jackass' phase just irritated me...but are we suddenly supposed to pretend that we all that Tony Hawk has sucked for the last 8 years in favor of a couple of videos of an untested game that we only have a few videos of and some sketchy details about?

Skate looks interesting, but when did EA become a rebel?

I was a massive fan of the hawks games (esp number 2) I played that to death of the PS2. A big part of the fun in those games is doing amazing tricks with a forgiving learning curve. I'm all for some more realism but not if I've got to pull my hair out trying some over and over to little results. That's too much like real life.

That clip really shows off how Skate captures the essence of skateboarding. It reminded me of exactly what it's like to skate through the city. Rolling around, popping a few tricks, trying to make a run. Not combo-ing and manualing throughout the whole level and trying to produce some insane score. I like that, this is going to be refreshing. I think I might actually pick up my old skateboard just to enjoy riding down some hills a landing some tricks. Maybe I'll try that gap at the old school I never quite could land.

Blah, blah, blah. If I wanted a more realistic skateboarding experience I would grab my deck and hit the pavement. Video gaming is about suspension of belief, not reality. It's like saying Big Buck Hunter is a better game than Halo because we don't have plasme rifles yet. If you want realism go the eff outside.

Both valid points.

I guess I'm just a bit fed up with people bashing the Hawk series because of its absurdity. Truth is, that for the past 8 years I have nearly worn a hole in these discs from use. Give the game credit where it is due. Yeah, Skate looks good, and will probably be fun, for a while. I bet it gets tired quickly though.

I grew tired of Tony Hawk games after THPS4. I'm glad to see a less ridiculous skateboarding game. As for all the haters out there, though. Just be freaking glad we're getting something from EA that isn't licensed or a sequel. If you boycott everything they do it isn't going to matter because they are too big for you to matter to them, but if you support their new IPs, well, maybe, they'll stop shoving crap down our throats. Just a thought.

Any games gets boring after a while. I think this game will stay in the system longer if you use to skateboard. You remember the game Thrasher. That was a fun game.

Why do people criticize EA so much? When you decide to watch a movie, do you even pay attention to who's distributing / funding it? No. Its all about the artists. EA as a corporation may suck, but that doesn't mean that artists can't produce good product that's worth paying for under the EA umbrella. I don't see anyone boycotting Sony movies like Spiderman cause Sony has ran the PSP and PS3 into the ground or being an evil corporation?

This reminds me of the "No Fun Mode" secret code in the older Tony Hawk games. It made the physics "realistic".

It also lived up to its name.

However, now I think things have gotten out of hand in Hawk. Getting off the board? Matrix-like slow motion? I remember when I thought "revert" was pushing it.

I don't expect Skate to be good; the Fight Night control looks cute but I don't want to dragon-punch just to do a kick flip.

However, the best thing that could happen is that it forces Neversoft to scale back all the ridiculous stuff they've been putting into Hawk and focus pure skating.

Anybody remember Thrasher: Skate and Destroy? It was a PS1 game that was the first Rockstar-branded game from Take 2. A realistic take on skating has done before, by Rockstar no less, and in the end, people didn't like it and 8 years later I still don't think they will. Realistic skating = crashing a LOT.

Ah, actually: WRONG. Miramax, LionsGate, Dimension, Disney, Handmade Films, Janus Films and Merchant Ivory in particular are some distributor/funding companies who garnered a reputation based on their output. And apparently you're unaware of the various controversies over the years when certain companies, such as Disney, released movies that didn't match consumer expectations for their films. Never mind the number of times people threatened a particular distributor/funder with boycotting for a film they considered offensive (see Life of Brian, Fahrenheit 9/11, etc.)

Exactly what I was thinking. Whenever something new comes out, all of a sudden, the old standard becomes the red headed step child. You see it all the time. Lord of the Rings Online is released, suddenly, WoW is a pile of crap an nobody plays it.

Heck, I think tony hawk project 8 is fun. I can't do those sick combos because I'm not that good. I like to skate around and just mess around doing some missions. The more games the better.

Ugh. The comments here disgust me. I've seen nothing but praise from everyone who's had hands-on time with the game, and yet people are still willing to claim that all of that is completely worthless nonsense and that the game is almost definitely going to suck nonetheless.

It's like people don't even remember why everyone hates EA (hint: it's got almost nothing to do with the games, and EVERYTHING to do with the business behind them).

This has me interested. I was one of the three people who actually enjoyed Thrasher: Skate and Destroy for the PSOne, because it was a more realistic and technical skateboarding game. I really don't care much for the Tony Hawk style, though TH4 wasn't bad (but Aggressive Inline is still better :) )

Maybe this game will get me interested in the genre again? I hope so, it looks fantastic!

I know some people have said that being realistic isnt always fun, well when it comes to skating games it is, all real skaters enjoy playing Tony Hawk games with no stats and trying to skate how they do in real life, sessioning a small ledge or a stair set for hours.

I personally cannot wait for this game to come out.

Does anyone know when the UK release date is?

@Chris -

Precisely. The Tony Hawk series, while incredibly fun in its own right, lacks the realism that most people that actually skate desire. I've spent hours trying to session a ledge or a rail in Tony Hawk, but it's futile considering the warp speed of the gameplay.

I'd welcome something that puts out the feeling of the intimate connection that can be felt between a skater and their obstacle. Blowing by a ledge at 200mph is far less appealing to a real skater than a slow, clean, tweaked out grind that finishes smooth.

Mang all you idiots out there that love button mashing have probably never set foot on a skateboard and will never know the true feeling of skateboarding, therefore you pick up a controller to boast about landing a 1 million point trick combo, which you probably used cheats to do, and had no idea what tricks you did. Can you tell me what a varial heel looks like? I doubt it. For those who do skate and play Tony Hawk do you ever find yourself just skating around trying to do things that look realistic once you've beat the game? I do. This senseless Tony Hawk button mash ollie ten feet high wallride 60 feet long bull has gone on for 8 years and isn't stopping there. Finally someone has the sensibility to come up with a game that truly captures skateboarding. Analog sticks idea is genius. The whole concept of skate is a revolution of gaming. I can't wait for this game to hit the shelves, then I can wake up, skate virtually for a few hours, grab my skate, hit the park for another few hours and get the same sort of experience from both. Those who don't get what I'm talking about and still dis EA for being smarter than Tony Hawk go grab a skate and see if you can stand on it. Props to EA and capturing what many skaters have been waiting for.

Another thing I just noticed is everyone hates EA for being involved in the money and not really the game at all. Take a look at the game buddy, looks like they're pretty hyped up about gettin it done right. Take a look at the line up of skaters they got. They're all real to life skaters that aren't about fame and fortune. They're pro's that skate to skate, not to get rich and be a dick and live life like a king. If you haven't heard of anyone starring in the game do yourself a favor and dig a hole six feet under the earths surface and lay down in it. This game is made by skaters for skaters if you don't skate then go beat tony hawk for the 10th time. Is it boring yet? It's boring the second time through. If you actually go to ea.com/skate and read some of the news articles about it on there you'll see that this game beats tony hawk in the first three sentences. Watch the videos if your not completely appalled by how good the game looks you don't deserve to come within 30 feet of skateboarding. People that don't skate shouldn't play skate games. It's unnatural, it's like a dog and a cat gettin it on. It's not right. Haha. All you jocks or whatever that think you know skateboarding go hit a little rubber thing around on some ice then "shower" with your team after. If thats not gay then wtf. I think I'm done now so peace. Tony Hawk, your all fame and could care less what I think, thats why your games suck. Listen to your consumers guy. EA figured something out and look what they came up with.
