Tecmo Bowl returns in 2008

How Tecmo plans to flip the script is still a mystery us ... and maybe even to Tecmo itself. Aside from a vague announcement during Tecmo's 'Night Out 07' event, the developer has shown little more than a logo of the new Tecmo Bowl (not the one pictured above) and refuses to discuss the intended platform. "I can't tell you what platform we're making it for. But I can tell you that it's probably not going to be on the platform that you're expecting ... if that makes any sense," hinted Tecmo vice president Mr. Inaga, adding, "This is going to be a brand new game for one of the new systems." Ready, down -- hut-hut-hut-hut-hut-hut...

cell phone or DS? you decide!
sheppy @ May 11th 2007 12:07PM
Considering the Rygar announcement, I say GP2X. Or Wonderswan. I could always use a new NGPC game. Or how about a Xavix title?

Tecmo SUPER Bowl was the first game to popularize the use of Franchise names, etc. Tecmo Bowl couldn't obtain offical NFL licenses, though the player rosters were almost identical.

My father and I used to play Tecmo Bowl (and later, Tecmo Super Bowl) every sunday. On Superbowl Sunday we'd have two NES systems set up in addition to the game to Sim the matchup with Superbowl. Ironically, Buffalo usually won in our sims.
J.Goodwin @ May 11th 2007 12:22PM
Must mean DS.
Yaktastic @ May 11th 2007 12:23PM
@ J.Lee
LOL... yeah, Wide Right was a difficult thing to get TSB to predict accurately :)
Jack of No Trades @ May 11th 2007 12:26PM
Its been awhile since i've seen J. Goodwin on here.
Darkness @ May 11th 2007 12:38PM
I'm guessing DS or 360 on this one. Tecmo seems to like the 360, so I wouldn't be surprised if the game heads that way.
doob @ May 11th 2007 12:47PM
My next door neighbor friend use to beat his uncle in tecmo bowl all the time. One day, his uncle miraculously beat hmy friend. My friend was so mad he threw the controller at his uncle and broke his nose.

"This is going to be a brand new game for one of the new systems."
It's gotta be PS3, 360 or Wii then.

Haha...and who says that video games don't make people violent? :)
majortom1981 @ May 11th 2007 12:56PM
Maybe the wii. You would think it would be announced for the 360 or the ps3. HE stated something about not being on the console you think . Wich would make me think either the wii or the ds.
Yellow Texan @ May 11th 2007 12:59PM
j.lee: Technically the Joystiq blogger is correct. Tecmo Bowl did include NFL player's names just not the teams. NFLPA is an abbreviation for NFL Players Association. Tecmo Super Bowl included both NFLPA and NFL property licenses.
atlnative @ May 11th 2007 1:04PM
It's on the gizmondo!
j.lee @ May 11th 2007 1:22PM
Yellow Texan:
The NFLPA disclaimer was added after my post. Initially the article wasn't clear about that.
Side note RE: TSB - I'm originally from Buffalo. The only player in all of Tecmo Super Bowl that wasn't listed on the roster was Jim Kelly, the then quarterback for the Bills. I don't remember why. He may not have been a member of the NFLPA, or he may just not have wanted it. But it wasn't quite the same scoring a TD with "QB BUFFALO".
WaffleTron @ May 11th 2007 1:30PM
If we expect it to come out for everything will it not come out?
Uhh, really though, I'm expecting it for Wii mainly because Tecmo Bowl for NES was released on the VC and football games on the Wii are fun and just make sense as proven by Madden. So um...does this mean it won't be on the Wii?
Matt B @ May 11th 2007 1:32PM
It will be a PS3 exclusive because, as he eluded to, no one would ever expect it.
Count Noobula @ May 11th 2007 1:35PM
It'll be XBLA. I've cracked it. Thanks for your applause everyone. No really, thank you.
W/E. Why all the secrecy over this game? Yes it was awesome back in the day, but why keep the new one a secret. Are they hoping that by doing this that people will go out and buy all 3 consoles, Vista, PSP, and DS just so they can make sure they get the game?
Jonathan Tran @ May 11th 2007 1:36PM
wait what the... another homebrew post-mortem Dreamcast game? AWESOME!!
Count Noobula @ May 11th 2007 1:43PM
No wait, I was wrong its not XBLA at all. Its for Xbox 360 Elite models and 60GB PS3's only. Tough luck Core and Premium models, and under-developed 20GB PS3's. You have been pwned by Tecmo Bowl.
WaffleTron @ May 11th 2007 1:54PM
this is a gameboy printer exclusive.
Sam G. @ May 11th 2007 2:27PM
Clearly this is the Phantom's flagship title.
jaker @ May 11th 2007 2:52PM
It will be for the PSP. The horizontal screen would work perfect for the traditional Tecmo Bowl presentation.
wackychan @ May 11th 2007 3:10PM
Its coming out for the wii, and it will suck.
Billiam247 @ May 11th 2007 3:31PM
#14,
Randall Cunningham (QB Eagles) was also missing from the game. There were a few more that I can't remember offhand either.
Mr Khan @ May 11th 2007 5:39PM
An all-supported-platforms blitz (PS2, PS3, Wii, 360, DS, PSP) would be the best approach
but actually focus on making the gameplay more intuitive than Madden. Think: WITHOUT official NFL licenses, it'll actually be EASIER for them to make the game more versitile and customizible, they could make an artificial player roster very similar to that of the actual NFL (similar stats, different names), but allow you to build your own team from the pool of players, and teams would be different on a season-by-season basis
If they can build a better football game, they might finally put an end to Madden. You destroy Madden, you cripple EA...
zwarrior @ May 11th 2007 6:09PM
It might not be wii or DS, he said on a system we might not think, that means not with the company the games were previously on. It's Xbox 360 for sure
aaron @ May 11th 2007 9:32PM
If it's coming out on Wii, than how will the main demographic (kids, little at that) enjoy a football game WITHOUT real players? Kids these days regardless of age want to control real players on real teams. Now if this is released on PS3 and 360, then I'll just shut up.
The ZeroCorpse @ May 12th 2007 3:00PM
Let me ask you sports game players a question:
WHY do you need the actual player names assigned to your digital player's on-screen sprites/polygons/what-have-you?
I mean, if the quarterback for the Chicago team is just called "Chicago QB" or something else, but has been modeled to simulate the real guy's playing ability, how does it make the game less worth your purchase than if they used a real name?
And how is it that the little digital dudes can basically stay the same year after year, with no major changes in the way they function on-screen, but you guys will but the newest version to have the roster (ie the NAMES) reflect the real world?
Are sports games fans THAT unimaginative that not having the name ON THE SCREEN somehow wrecks the game for you?
I mean. . . You DO realize that the digital players aren't the REAL players, right? They don't accurately represent what the real guys can do, as they're just a collection of ones and zeroes compiled to represent football players. If your collection of ones and zeroes lacks the name or face of a particular athlete, that doesn't mean he's any more or less likely to play like that athlete than if he DID have the name and face.
What I'm getting at is that a sports game is a sports game. It shouldn't matter what NAMES are on the players or teams; Just that the gameplay is good and represents what it's like to play the sport.
Are you buying the game, or are you buying their likenesses? Because if you just want the athletes' likenesses, you can pick up trading cards for a lot less than a video game.

QB Browns FTW!
