Once again, Ludwig manages to take the incredibly dull subject of sales charts and make you want to read the entire post, from first word to last punctuation mark. Simply astounding!

That boost of GameCube sales is most odd. People couldn't find Wiis, so they bought two GameCubes to duct tape them together, I guess.
(Relax, folks, I'm a Nintendo fan myself. But even I can take a joke)

Note, that I call myself a Nintendo FAN. Not a FANBOY. Reason? I appreciate Nintendo's games above any other developer, but doesn't mean I turn a blind eye to their faults (i.e. Friend Codes making online gaming rather tedius).

I'd like to be the one to point out that, not only did Wii sell more than all non-Nintendo hardware combined, but also that all non-Nintendo hardware combined is just over *one third* of the *difference* between DS sales and all other Nintendo hardware sales.

(35+15+13+3)=66 => 66 (183/3)=61

Math is fun when it fuels your fanboy pride :)

Let's stand together and throw sugar and praises and other wonderful things at our preferred systems while cursing the inability to sell of other systems!

If the Sony fanboys dare say anything we'll retaliate by saying the old PS is outselling the new PS!!!

i love more and more the whole" two game cubes duct-taped together" joke,even though its very over used its pretty cleaver

i wonder if the ps2 sales are so high because people are ductaping them together until they equal a ps3, its probly cheaper

5 ps2's +1 roll of ductape=$656
1 ps3 =700

you have to sacrifice the blu-ray player tho, which ironically is why the ps3 is so expensive in the first place

@18 mo:
I thought PS3 was about 40x stronger than the PS2?

40 PS2s x $130 = $5,200 (plus tax and duct tape costs (plus tax))

You see? We should be grateful Sony is selling it for just $600! And for those of you who shopped early enough, $500 for the limited edition 20GB model (with a pure-black casing!).

@#16 Jim:
But, you see, the PS3 sales have gone UP! So, what, if it was less than 200 more than the previous week? A gain is still a gain to Sony!

@15 Rubang B:

PS2 is taking over again. *sighs*, every PS2 sold is going to delay a PS3 sale for 2 years. But at least you don't have to worry about losing that customer to xbox. ;)

Wii's down. hmm, probably has a lot to do with people releasing they are getting EXACT same game as gamecube and ending up getting gamecube. 135% increase FTW!

Yeah, nobody cares about curing cancer, right? What a disgrace for PS3 owners to PAY to run their machines day and night so we as a society can overcome the deadly disease in this world.

Funny thing, if it's All about having a lot of games, why are people getting Wii? ;)

kingofwale, the only reason DS Lite and Wii sales go slightly up or down each week is due to the size of the latest shipments. Probably at least 95% of DS Lites and Wiis are sold out every week in Japan, Nintendo could probably sell something like 700k DS Lites and 300k Wiis a week for a month or two straight if they just made more of them.

It's amazing that the PS3 can only sell roughly 12,000 units a week in their own backyard. PS3 is first and foremost a failure in Japan thus far as well as a failure in North America.

Nice job with the hyperbole section!

As for the charts, maybe some Wiis were sold out at a store somewhere, and they wanted to sell off all their old GameCube stock, so the pushed them onto the customers or something?

Anyway, PSP beating PS3 is very funny, indeed, although the PS3 is still selling more than four times as much as the 360.

And the DS Lite! Almost up to 300,000! Wowzers!

This is Japan's hardware chart. So far they have Wii Sports and Play, WarioWare, Super Paper Mario, Twilight Princess, Fire Emblem, Pokemon Battle Revolution and Big Brain Academy. That's a strong first party line up considering the system has only been out a little over 5 months. Throw in the third party titles and it's easy to see why the Wii is flying off the shelves.

"Yeah, nobody cares about curing cancer, right?"

Do you want the truth? The truth is that no one cares enough to spend $600 on it. No one bought the PS3 to do Folding@Home. They bought the PS3 to watch movies and/or play games.

Also, you're representing the attitude Sony wants you to represent. "You won't buy a PS3 to help cure cancer? That's sad." They'll never say it, but then again, they don't have to. Everyone who owns a PS3 seems to be doing the job for them.

"Funny thing, if it's All about having a lot of games, why are people getting Wii? ;)"

Gausser hit the nail on the head. Japan is far ahead of North America when it comes to Wii. They're ahead in hardware, software, and even Virtual Console titles (as is Europe & UK areas).

Yet again, you start talking about something you know nothing about. But hey, at least you were on-topic this time.

I can understand the DS is successful, but not that it outsold everything else combined.

What I don't get, is that the Wii, ductape included, is successful relying on gamecube and lame PS2 ports like Paper Mario, Zelda, Resident Evil and Mortal Kombat, tech demos like Wii Sports, Wii play, Elebits and Wario Ware, and old games with no new modes or graphics or both from the Virtual Console.

I could buy the Wii any second I wanted if it was available. I just don't want to right now, nothing or not much appealing to me.

@32. bootsielon

You think it might be because some of those ports are actually MORE FUN with the controls? For all the bashing the controls take, i have a fuckin TRUCK LOAD of fun playing CoD3...its pretty immersive when you feel like youre pointing the gun and get to still move using the chuck. And when you have your fill of that style of play, throw in NFS:carbon, and all of a sudden you have your racing wheel...same controller...great controls.

Then when youre done with that, throw in zelda, get your adventure on. It is remarkably comfortable not having to have your hands glued together by a solid controller; you just let your hands rest, and use the sword when you have to. Thennnn your buddies come over and you bust out a drunken/drug enduced golf game or 4 player tennis, which ends up being maddening amounts of fun

then just for the hell of it, you throw on Gunstar Heroes, or Contra 3 and get your old school game fix

want to relive the old shooter days of Gradius3 or Rtype? Wii's got your back there too with perfect emulation...then you plug in your GC controllers and hit some STRIKERS and SSBM for old time's sake. Great fuckin system...

Why is it flying off the shelves around the globe? oh i really dont know

Pretty cool, man. It's nice how you managed to get the duct-tape feel with cord only. And it's also quite understandable, given duct tape would had ruined two perfect gamecubes... they would had ended up sticky...

But then, you´d had gotten a wii...

That's kind of like saying "Look at where Xbox Live accounts are sold - those are the *important* video game markets." That's not true - the important markets are anywhere you can sell consoles. In this case you are saying that the important PS3 markets are where PS3s are already selling.

Let's look at what percent of total sales were made in Japan for previous systems (courtesy vgcharts.org): 22% PS2, 2% XBOX and 19% GC; 21% PS and 17% N64; 35% SNES and 11.7% GEN; 31% NES. I don't think any company wants to ignore a market that usually has about 1/6-1/3 of all sales, especially in seeing that the leading console in each generation usually has a higher ratio of Japanese sales (that's gotta mean something). And I didn't even bring in handhelds, which are *huge* in Japan.

I woner how much electrical power is being used around the world to help cure cancer via folding@home, strangely one of the main causes of cancer is electricity production - So a better question would be;

"How much cancer has Folding@Home caused" - and yet still hasn't cured 1 person.
