Rumor: PS3 firmware 2.0 details leaked
A user on the official PlayStation forums asserts to have a full list of features meant for an upcoming PlayStation 3 firmware update. The "2.0" update contains several significant changes for Sony's system, including the ability to access the Emmy award-winning XcrossMediaBar menu system during gameplay. The method of selecting output resolution is marked for change once again, as is the backwards compatibility range of PAL consoles.Sony has officially dismissed these details, however, lumping them firmly into a category of elaborate speculation. "We haven't released any information regarding a new firmware update for PS3, and don't comment on rumors or speculation." Feel free to comment yourself after perusing the list after the break.

Files can now be played sequentially.
I would nearly kill for this on 360.
NNTPgrip @ May 14th 2007 4:22PM
Connect, Browse, and play from network shares, instead of just USB/cards. NOW.
After that expand the codec support.
CAT MODE: Allow disabling of the Eject and power on the console during movie/gameplay. Cat gets really interested when its on. Has ejected/turned off plenty. Taped a thick piece of paper for now, but thats ghetto.
ZenGaijin @ May 14th 2007 4:16PM
I still want a custom soundtrack feature. Its a really small feature but its really enjoyable to listen to your own music.
JimeneX @ May 14th 2007 4:17PM
Still no upscaling of 720p PS3 games to 1080i?

Wow, now I will buy a PS3......NOT!!

sheppy @ May 14th 2007 4:27PM
@ANt,
really now.. a firmware update would be the selling point for a console for you? I mean, that's like buying a Wii for the Photo Channel.
@Derka
You realize some upcoming games will require the latest firmware, right? This is a standard thing on PSP as well. You laugh, and I guess it's kinda funny, but there will be games that require firmware 2.0 to play in the future. Granted, when this actually becomes the standard, the games will ship with the firmware on the disc.

Anything you can do I can do better!!!! Except for the available HD space on the 360 Elite system.

ya'll are wack...
if this update is real that would be awesome, even if PS3 still isnt up to par in some peoples opinions

I hate how these websites fill up with a bunch of "fanboys" and so when you click on the news and get excited...they're always that a-hole that tears it down. even if you dont like the system, its a pretty big update for "sony fanboys" or just PS3 owners.

XMB in game would make my life much better. I want custom soundtracks, the music in Motorstorm makes me want to scream.
jason @ May 14th 2007 4:43PM
@10
think before you speak ps3 owners can add a hard dive
alot cheaper then a 360 owner could
sheppy @ May 14th 2007 4:45PM
"Anything you can do I can do better!!!! Except for the available HD space on the 360 Elite system."
What's the point of all that available HD space when developers aren't allowed to rely on it?
Also, for $30 cheaper than the Microsoft HD...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822149059
Big difference between being able to upgrade whenever I like and Microsoft telling me what I can and cannot do.
jason @ May 14th 2007 4:48PM
Now my question is with this update can you do everything you can do in the 360's guide button durring the game such as listen/read/send messages, private chat, gamerscore(when trophies come out), change gamerpicture, play your own music,send game invites, and stuff like that. Not trying to bash sony or anything but that would be a big catch up for them online
sheppy @ May 14th 2007 4:50PM
I'm hoping if XMB is available from inside the game, then the answer is yes. But this is rumor to begin with and hard telling how much of the XMB is accessable.
Buckshot @ May 14th 2007 4:57PM
Crono, you can do it (play files sequentially) if you have Vista Home Premium or Ultimate and use media center extender on the 360. I just rolled my Media Center desktop to Ultimate and it looks good, works better than the xp media center.
Davis @ May 14th 2007 6:37PM
total bs!
That user makes posts like that all the time! She's an unreliable source and you shouldn't have even posted this.
Gamble20 @ May 14th 2007 5:10PM
This question doesn't belong here but I am asking it anyways...
it seems like the general thought is Apple Mac OS X is better than Win XP/Vista, so why does MS still have 90% market control?
cc123 @ May 14th 2007 5:10PM
Don't get too excited about this. Someone is lying over at the playstation forums only thing is we don't know if it's the original poster or the mods.
Something really weird is going on though...
Edge of Blade @ May 14th 2007 5:11PM
I hate to rain on your parade fanboys, but this is an excellent example of Sony playing catch up and flooding you with irrelevant bullet points to make up the rest of the difference.
Chimuel @ May 14th 2007 5:12PM
@19
The PS3 has 64mb dedicated to the XMB at all times, so hopefully Sony will start utilizing all that 64mb.
Edge of Blade @ May 14th 2007 5:23PM
@Gamble20:
You're damn straight this question doesn't belong here.
If you believe the smear campaign like a good little Mac Addict(TM), then I'm sure it looks that way. The Mac vs. PC marketing is unconscionable, unmitigated bullshit, and the sad truth is that people believe it.
It's like I keep telling people: do you want a piece of manufactured consumer electronics, designed, marketed, and sold to you like you are an idiot; or do you want a real computer with real support, minus the smear campaign. I've seen Microsoft put their money where their mouth is, while companies like Sony and Apple pump up the marketing to bridge the gap.
Honestly, do you think that anyone that has a Mac is part of any serious "revolution" at this point in time? How do you think MS got 90% market share? Why do you think people hate one billion dollar corporation over every other billion dollar corporation?
Fanboys. The lot of them.
C. Grant @ May 14th 2007 5:51PM
Edge of Blade: I use a Mac because I like it better -- I don't think I'm an idiot or that it's a product built for idiots. And you're actually screaming about fanboys?
Striderhayasa @ May 14th 2007 5:57PM
Custom Soundtracks would be awesome. they're great in ExciteTruck and NFL 25k and Wipeout Pulse is going to support them. What's up Sony? How about some love?
Pulling up the Crossbar in-game would rock too and just in time for Home Beta too.
Sounds like a solid update to me. Don't know what all the negativity is for.
umm...hello?? @ May 14th 2007 6:06PM
@3
you're an idiot...your TV should upscale the image, and 720P and 1080i are almost identical anyways.
looks like a good update to me...what I REALLY want is an auto-shutoff (which is probably their "energy saver"), most of the other stuff is crap I use my computer for anyway--how about some freakin' games, sony!!!!!!!!!!!!
Digi Smalls @ May 14th 2007 6:10PM
god, having the XMB over a paused game would frankly rock. WHEN sony WHEN? you're missing out on the next-gen now.
.
Shagittarius @ May 14th 2007 6:21PM
"you're an idiot...your TV should upscale the image, and 720P and 1080i are almost identical anyways. "
ummmmm...retard, there are plenty of TVs that do not have internal scalers, most of them are older but all the people that paved the way for cheaper HD sets shouldn't be cut off beacuse they bought early.
and no I bet you want to believe that 720p = 1080i but guess what...your lying to yourself. A reduction in resolution is less screen realestate. You can convince yourself that the set you own is great but theres always going to be better sets, and 1080i started as a superior resolution, 720p is just the stop gap between 1080i and 1080p. No one is going to sell 720p sets that aren't bargain sets from now on. Unless your talking plasma, and even plasma is starting to leave 720p behind this year.
ummmmmmm...ok

No offense but not everyone who bought a mac is because they are fanboys. Personally, I don't like em. Half of me sees the OS sooo damn custom tailored to MySpace trends that it annoys me when so many basic, logical things still elude the system (but to be fair, that's also why I don't have Vista) and the other half remembers the countless hours lost on graphic design projects when I had to use lab macs and they crashed or generally sucked. But it's preference.
A friend of mine swears by macs but it's his secondary system. His desktop remains a PC.
If you're searching for the trendy mactards, they're in coffee houses, not on gaming sites.
severian00 @ May 14th 2007 7:47PM
I hate Sony with a passion but the thing that I like the most is being able to use your own pic of choice as your avatar. That needs to be in the next dash update. I have a great picture of Matt Hasselbeck and my favorite Blazer, Brandon Roy, that I wanna make into my gamerpic.
Mr Khan @ May 14th 2007 7:51PM
The only thing that sets Mac OS behind Windows is the fact that Apple computers as a piece of hardware are as inscrutable as video game consoles, i want customizable hardware. Mac OS X was superior until Vista, but now the 2 are on the level as OS's
however, i prefer a customizable OS too, and as soon as i get the money, i'm moving over to a Linux box
Ubuntu, Fedora Core, Red Hat, between them they have more marketshare than Mac OS (3% vs Mac's 2%)
Mr Khan @ May 14th 2007 7:56PM
Oh, and i do agree to the general nod of hatred about the Mac vs PC commercials, talk about spin, they make the fact that Windows PC's can be upgraded look like its a weakness...
I just want to walk into one of those commercials and ask that guy how i get more V-RAM in a Mac, then kick him in the nuts after he says that's impossible
Hypothosizer @ May 14th 2007 8:36PM
I honestly think that the reason PCs are less reliable than Macs (yes, they are, indisputable) is because they are pieced together from various parts that do work together, but were not made to work perfectly with one-another.
This gets even worse when you get into people making their own PCs, as these are even more foreign parts that are just hoping to work together properly.
Okay, go ahead and slay me now.
Hatch @ May 14th 2007 8:52PM

ill trooper @ May 14th 2007 9:06PM
Edge of Blade, Mr Khan... And all you mac-fearing guys that act waaaaay more fanboyish than many Mac people you claim to criticise...
Let us pros do our work on the Mac. Here in NYC, the majority of professional creatives I know use OSX for video editing, music creation, sound editing, motion graphics, web design, writing, blogging, photo-retouching... basically all for things you have seen or heard on television or in movies, magazines and advertising. Yes, REAL things. Not some YouTube 'LonelyDork15" stuff.
Don't worry that it's a smaller percentage of the market, in reality it's not 'How Many Use Macs,' it's 'WHO uses Macs.' Even if it were only 2% of people using computers, it's still MILLIONS of people.
What you think about Macs is wrong - Sure, like with any OS, there are people who don't know what the fuck is going on, they just need to check their MySpace page and then leave for work, but don't assume a Mac owner is computer illiterate.
What about the lemmings like grandparents, computer-illiterate folks, and parents that go with the default choice of Dell/Windows and force the majority? You think they'll be able to upgrade the v-ram on their $499 Dell? Then you have to add in all the businesses like Pep Boys, Starbucks and WalMart that need to have Windows-based cash-register or inventory systems... That's a percentage-builder. Is this really the quality percentage you like to lump yourself in with?
Finally you get to the group of knowledgeable people that opt to use WIndows, like another group of knowledgeable people that opt to use OS X. It used to bother me that I didn't have games, but then I built a Windows PC for gaming. And the truth is, since I got over Battlefield2, PC gaming only happens a little bit in my life, most of my gaming happens on my consoles. So I take a little loss there - but when I work, I opt for the Mac.
But you know what? Keep using what you like. I will do the same. It just looks stupid when you assume Mac users don't know shit about computers - it's often the exact opposite.
Hilarious @ May 14th 2007 11:10PM
yeah for Video editing, art, and the like Macs are really good, but when you start getting into overall functionality Windows PC will always beat it hands down. I do admit that I like using Macs when I use photoshop, indesign, uh...thats about it.
Pick a PC/Mac based on what you want to do with it.
Gamble20 @ May 15th 2007 12:26AM
Yeah everybody knows Mac wins in the photoshop, home film editing ect. category, but Windows owns the Office category...which means alot.
I agree with the other a few posts back from me (or directly behind me at the time I typed this) its about what you want to use it more.
Windows basically has office and games, mac can do everything else and is better at the "creative" stuff.
I think in 15 years Apple will have gained over double digit market share, because the young generation is in love with Apple, and that makes a difference when they grow older and choose to buy a notebook/desktop computer. Apple has been named at least in the top 5 in innovation an fastest growing companies (after becoming the fastest collapsing company) and stuff like that consistently, and they dont have an under the radar image like Linux, people know Apple now a days unlike 5 or 6 years ago when they were all but forgotten. MLike or hate Steve Jobs, he has brought Apple back from certain death
Aberu @ May 15th 2007 10:36AM
@Gamble20
Mac OSX is hardly superior. Can you play games on it? It truely ISN'T more user friendly. Memorizing roads of hotkeys with weird button combinations to do things that are accessible on right clicks or submenus on Windows isn't user friendly. And Windows has EVERY important media software Macs do, sometimes better, so even professionals would prefer a PC. I mean on a PC you can get a better video card, a better processor, everything, for professional or amateur media editing at a much cheaper price. Maybe that's why Windows machines win. The 800 dollar Dell performs just as well as the 1600 dollar Mac.

celkin @ May 15th 2007 3:23PM
Hey Mac users, what kind of console do you have? If you have a 360, you're hypocrites because you're still feeding the evil empire. If you have a PS3 or even a PS2, you're still hypocrites because you're supporting another evil empire that supports THE evil empire (by making VAIO PC's). So what does that leave? The Wii? Ok then, I guess HD gaming is for n00bs anyway. Too bad you don't have an iBox.
Orbstah @ May 17th 2007 12:16PM
Aberu,
Spoken like a true windows user, When i go from MAC to windows its just as difficult and un user friendly as going from windows to mac, so grow up. We dont buy macs to play games on you fool. Its for more important stuff than that. Macs are used by more professional musicians than PC's. Radio 1 use macs too. But i suppose you mean everyone uses a pc expect those 2, oh hang on most news papers use macs as do most PC magazine publishers, and before you bore me with your awesome inteligence i mean for publishing the mag not playing the games. ok then maybe we miss then ones out and every one else uses a PC oh wait hang on 87% of every magazine published is done on a mac, i tell you what lets just say everyone uses a PC apart from them. And i bet your the same person that complains about the high price of PS3 yet you just told us you spent 800 on your PC to play games with !!! Lol welcome to the real word Aberu, dont comment on something you know nothing about.
Orbstah @ May 19th 2007 9:22AM
Mr Khan,
You know the problem with saying vista is compareable with os x is that its just not true, Vista is full of technology thats over 2 years old, and can i just ask you to compare the needed PC specs for vista to run as it was intended ? when apple release an os everyone gets a speed boost and a more optomized system, MS doesnt do this they just tell you to increase your systems specs.
