While he'll be reprising the role of world-weary genetically altered supersoldier-cum-poet, Solid Snake, in Metal Gear Solid 4, David Hayter will not be playing a role -- either in front of or behind the camera -- in the upcoming Metal Gear Solid movie.
According to an exclusive report by IGN, the screenwriter slash actor pitched his treatment to the fat cats at Konami who, in their infinite and no doubt genetically enhanced wisdom, decided to pass. His take: "Metal Gear as the Apocalypse Now of the digital age, with Snake at the center of a swirling whirlpool of Genomic/military madness." Toss in a couple large-breasted villainesses, some gun-twirling cold war relics, and the requisite long-winded exposition on the swirling whirpool of genomic and military madness and it smells like ... victory.

If Big Boss is in the movie, they damn better well cast Kurt Russell, even if it's just in a flashback.

Anybody have a link to the video that the right side of the image is from. I haven't watched it in a while and I'm having trouble finding it.

HOLY CRAP....you guys scared me for a minute. My computer at work craped out and it just said,
"Hayter, voice of Snake not involved in Metal G..."
Then the internets when out and I tried desperately to get a connection again. For a second I thought he wasn't going to be in MGS4.
They should of let him write the screenplay for the movie. By its description alone it sounds like a keeper.

That's too bad, I remember hearing a long time ago that he was working on a script for an eventual movie. Based on his work on X-Men and X-Men 2, I'm sure it'd be great.
I still think that Hugh Jackman would play a really good Snake. Hayter and Jackman became friends while working on X-Men, and apparently Hayter has said that he'd like to see Jackman as Snake. I think that'd work really good.

What's with all the double posts? Is there something going screwy with the system at Joystiq or what?
That said, I'm not the studio execs truly appreciate the caché that having David Hayter's name attached to an MGS movie would have with the fans, wherever in the credits that name may appear.

Considering how bad the X-Men movies were.. the fact he won't be writing anything for it makes me happy.
Then again, I'm bound to be dissapointed with anything MGS that doesn't have Kojima in it.
I mean.. man, why even make a MGS movie? The games more movie than game anyways as is!

@Otis
Hideo Kojima is executive producer for the movie. Also, you may not have enjoyed the first two X-Men films, but they have very high fresh ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, so they aren't bad movies by any stretch of the imagination. Also, the first X-Men film proved that well-crafted comic-book superhero films COULD be made, as we all know how superhero films began to explode on the screen following X-Men. In other words, your distaste for those films is irrelevant.

i for one refuse. hayter is the only one that can play snake in the movie and not take me out of the experience. it would just work.
however, if this never becomes a reality, the only hollywood actor i like for the part is clooney.

The description, although short, sounds awesome. I would love to see an epic movie based on Metal Gear.

I say get Kiefer Sutherland for the role. 24 is basically Metal Gear Solid without the robots and talking arm; and I wouldn't be surprised if they add those next season.

I like the metal gear games because they feel like your playing a B-rate spy movie. So unless they change(improve) the source data for the movie, this is likely to be exactly what the game imitates. Throw in Snakes ultra mullet and you have film that Uwe Boll wouldn't touch.

He may not have been the greatest actor, but he really IS the voice of Snake in America. It's a shame, truly a shame. Or a sham. Depending on your angle.
