Update: Rejoice, Master Chief minions! Bungie says the Crackdown patch is out and your access to the Halo 3 beta should now be unhindered. The beta has also been extended by four days to June 10th, 11:59PM PDT.
Original post:
For those who haven't yet experienced complete mental meltdown and are still capable of reading English sentences, Bungie's website now hosts an update regarding this morning's spectacular non-arrival of the Halo 3 Beta designated for Crackdown owners. Frankie reports that a solution has been found and is currently undergoing testing. "Assuming the test pass goes according to plan, the fix will come in the form of a Crackdown title update within the next three to six hours." At the latest, it means you can turn your Xbox 360 (and your website, if you're Major Nelson) back on at about 12:30AM EST.
The Bungie man also apologizes for the inconvenience and hopes that the extreme emotional duress you've suffered will become "distant memory once you pick up the Spartan Laser, launch yourself from a Mancannon and enjoy online shenanigans with your friends."
(A note of warning: If your friend, Bruce Banner, invited you to play Halo 3 at his house tonight... don't go.)

Seriously, how did they not realize before today that there was a problem with the "Crackdown" beta launch? Given what a major release this is, I'm amazed that it wasn't ready to go, let alone that they had to spend all day trying to find a fix and then test it.

My roommate has been playing the beta all day, and I just have to say that all of you need to stop whining because it's just a shinier Halo 2. Nothing impressive. Nothing worth getting upset about.

Of course i made fun of him all day, telling him how much time he could've been playing Halo 3 if his parents hadn't made him come

I love how everyone is so angry because a *B*E*T*A* is having problems. How many times did Bungie repeat themselves by stating that there will be issues...because its a beta? I know they said it multiple times.
This isn't a full-blown demo. This isn't the game itself. Its a beta.
Such a reaction just further proves why developers don't release betas to the public. I'm hoping GG and Sony back off on this Killzone beta now. The last thing it needs is these types of problems being made public.

I can't help thinking that this "problem" was a way to get people to download and pay for the crackdown upgrades while they impatiently wait for halo 3. I know i did it and I bet a ton of other suckers did too. I'm sure there is a huge sales spike that MS can't resist exploiting.

I hope they explain what the problem was, why there was a problem, what sort of compensation Crackdown purchasers will recieve, and if there will be a beta extension. And I don't want to here anyone talk about Bungie/Microsoft is doing us a favor by providing us a BETA etc,etc and how we shouldn't complain and chill out. They aren't doing us Crackdown buyers any favor: the same people who skipped work, school, and waited for hours like the awesome fans we are. The BETA was not free to us, it cost $60. It was an invitation bought with money. The only BETA freebies were given to a select few people, not the people who actually purchased Crackdown with the BETA on it. Compensate us, or we will be angry. Now back to GOW.

yes, it is a beta and its guaranteed to have problems ... but there shouldn't be any problems getting the beta onto our hard drives... they never said:
"there may be some problems with every step of the process, including procuring the client. we don't plan on testing crackdown thoroughly to make sure it works, so let's just see what happens. infact, we might even forget to send the e-mails that have keys in them, even though we know those work."
thus your theory flawed and you lose. good day, sir

well said. Longshotx, What's done is done, the most important thing now is to get it working as soon as they can. and then maybe extend the Beta period a bit. and do an open letter apologizing for it. Please don't pull the "oh, it's only affecting 3% of the population" crap

Its a beta. No one knows what to expect from a beta. That's WHY Bungie made it a point to mention the innevitable problems that come with a beta. They didn't say specifically what would happen because they didn't KNOW what was going to happen. Potential problems are seemingly endless. They could list all the problems that are most likely to happen, and stuff could still go wrong.
The only problem here is that hardly anyone understands what a beta is.

I'm tired of hearing your whiny ass crying over this stupid shit. I hope your copy of Crackdown bricks your 360 you idiot. I bought Crackdown for the game, the beta is just an extra. They owe you! I have seen copies of Crackdown w/o the Beta at my local Gamestop about 6 weeks ago. Actually they only had 2 copies with the Beta left. So I would say that most of the copies have the Beta, especially the ones that rental stores/Gamefly have b/c they probably buy their copies at release.

@ Sketcher shut your dumb ass up! How the fuck is the BETA free, can you explain it to me? If it were free then I should have been able to go in Gamestop and get a certificate with a code on it so I could redeem it on Xbox Live. No in order for me and the many other Crackdown users to play the BETA we needed to Keyword PURCHASE Crackdown. Now I like Crackdown. I think its a solid title but to say the BETA that came with it was free is flat out false. My ticket to the BETA invite was $60 dollars. It was not free. The only people who it was free to were a select group of pre-testers i.e. gaming networks, soldiers from iraq, contest winners. But, for me I had to pay something to get it. Crackdown was even advertised heavily with the idea that you would get the Halo 3 BETA. This was one of its selling points. And you also need to get your facts straight, RETARD. Halo 3 does not come out until late Sept 25-26, and I'm betting some bullS*** is going to happen and it will be pushed back. So yes they owe me, and the rest of their angry fan base for not properly testing this thing and promising to have it out in a certain time frame which is TODAY.
Maybe one day you will realize few things in life are free aside from the air we breath, and AEGIS WING.

the whole affair seems a little troublesome, and I think Major Nelson, in particular, really isn't doing himself any favors by being completely out-of-touch to keep the community updated during what is (ok, it's a comical, foolish thing, and we're making it larger than it is) one of the larger gaffes in the 360's LIVE history. certainly, the communication end of it could have been handled better.
that aside, the righteous indignation from people is hilarious, and completely undeserved. Bungie and Microsoft chose to make the beta somewhat open, and chose to give people different opportunities to win entry. we all chose to buy or rent Crackdown, because we either A) wanted the game, because it really is fairly good, and the beta was just a bonus, or B) got a copy of the game because we either missed out on the first invites and the rule of three weekend. we didn't have to sell our souls for anything, and there is no legal contract forcing Bungie to give you extra time with the beta, or anything else. they could just as easily have made the whole thing closed, or chose to give Crackdown owners a much more limited timeframe to play. it's a setback, but it's just a game, losers. it will be up soon, and then you can all go back to complaining about the HD-res textures on Halo 2 poly-counts.

shut up its a beta and they already said its gonna be up for three weeks. if you plan on playing for three weeks straight then you are propably freakishly pale, weak from lack of protein, and living in your moms basement, your the homegrown version of gollum. but if you actually have a life and will partake in halo 3 every chance you get outside of work/school/girl or boyfriends(which i doubt alot of the people crying over this game have). just chill out and play crackdown and if you beat it already play oblivion and if you beat it too you are an afformentioned homegrown gollum.

So you're all saying the problem is they didn't cover their distribution properly.
God forgive they were probably testing the real game.
Put it this way...if all crackdown beta entries were able to download the game this morning but the servers crashed an hour later...that would be fine according to you all right since the distribution went fine?
So you'll excuse bungie if the game is 100% buggy or bricks your 360 or crashes every 30 seconds...but if they cant get it onto your hard-drive in time then there will be HELL to pay?
Seriously.
CRY. EFFIN. MORE

There will probably be an extension to the beta period. That's all you can hope for, and more than you should really expect - much less demand.
I was literally laughing out loud today, reading the gathering of Internet Lawyers that was the Bungie forum. Just amazing.

I'm stupid because I understand the price that comes with a beta, and that problems were bound to exist in numerous forms? And how does your arguement hold any water? The entire thing is hearsay, and even if you're right, you can't say how YOU would deal with it, because you were never in that position.
Gotta love retrospective foresight. The weapon of the ignorant.

As strangely nice as you're being, kow, I must post a rebuttal. I think that if said people are willing to go to such lengths to play a video game BETA, and then complain about it on a public site, then they leave themselves open for judgment.
I know its all opinion, but to me and many others, cancelling work and/or school to play a beta sounds a tad extreme. I'm not fond of staying home for a demo, but that's a bit more reasonable, IMO.
