Killzone to have public beta, 'of course'

Guerrilla Games could avoid such temporary disaster by continuing to keep development and PR low-key throughout its beta. Since the shooter's spectacular, but oft-criticized E3 preview two years ago, Killzone has become vaporware, resurfacing from time to time through rumor, but never in reality. Buzz will begin again when further beta details are disclosed -- Downie says more info "later this year" -- but don't count on Killzone's public beta becoming the sort of hype-potion that Microsoft and Bungie have recently concocted.

Haha... James changed "uber-budget fiasco" to "hype-potion" and deleted the post that called him out on it. ;)

One of the things that put me off the PS3, which I was holding out for until last summer, was the realization that the amazing Killzone footage was nothing but CGI and that it was a common tactic of sony. In a way, I hope it's all wrong and Killzone lives up to the hype this time. I for one loved the original Killzone in spite of its flaws. We'll see.
James @ May 16th 2007 3:51PM
sorry 'bout deleting your comment pete (i hit the wrong button); i only meant to delete kevin's comment because it contained spam. anyway, "hype-potion" was the more appropriate description. please note the edit. [pete's original comment: "How is it a fiasco?"]

Not to be outdone by the Halo 3 beta, Sony's Killzone beta release will be delayed 14 hours. Nobody will have noticed, however, as nobody gives a crap about Killzone.
Erik Novak @ May 16th 2007 3:53PM
holy crap, Q-Zar.
samfish @ May 16th 2007 3:59PM
Killzone 2 has become Halo's retarded little brother who tries to copy everything it's big brother does, but does it stoopider and it's not cute because he keeps farting and getting his retarded spittle on you.
Satan Is My Motor @ May 16th 2007 4:01PM
ROTF sam!
Zoot Suit Jedi @ May 16th 2007 4:01PM
If a public beta is announced and nobody cares, does the beta still make a sound?
rfom @ May 16th 2007 4:02PM
Hopefully Sony realised after the CGI furore that overhyping a title is bad tactics and have focused on simply, quietly completing this title?
And if you look at the graphics on the best games coming out, they are quite close to the Killzone video (for example the graphics on MGS4 and Drake) - Killzone 2 may turn out like Motorstorm, where the graphics were not as good as the CGI renders but still quite good.

Wow, not only are you silly and immature, but also pretty bad at trolling. Oh and your little joke really ain't funny, although we know your trying really hard to be.

Well, at what we are currently looking at... Their beta will be issued, crash, brick every PS3 that even decides to mention it to its owner, and then destroy all the research that F&H has taken from the computing power of the machines.
Only then, will the internet explode like it did today.
rfom @ May 16th 2007 4:22PM
"it's not cute because he keeps farting and getting his retarded spittle on you."
That seems to describe the typical xbot on a PS3 forrum or article
samfish @ May 16th 2007 4:23PM
IslandLife,
You must:
A) Have a retarded siblimg
B) Be a retarded sibling or
C) Be that one person who actually thinks Killzone 2 will be good.
...which would still qualify you as a retard.
Either way, as with all attempts at humor, I encourage you to try and do better if you think you can.
rfom @ May 16th 2007 4:24PM
See....Samfish is a good example

Oh no, it was funny alright. Now have a seat fanboy.
Gouki4u @ May 16th 2007 4:47PM
If there had a been a press conference called to announce Killzone will also have a beta then this would be douchebaggery of the "look at me!" sort, but this was announced on the official Killzone forums, which hardly makes it a desperate plea for attention.
The 'of course' thing seems a bit needless though.
Will S @ May 16th 2007 4:50PM
Err, uh, James?
"But what ensures that a beta works as intended?"
Absolutely nothing? We're talking about a beta build, not a preview - the *point* is to identify things that don't work as intended. If everything works as intended, the beta is a waste of budget and they should just release a demo.
Triforceowner @ May 16th 2007 4:52PM
Actually, IslandLife, that wasn't an unfair comparison. I can definitely see Killzone as the little sibling to Halo. He tries to imitate Halo and it just annoys everyone. The "joke" could have done with out the "retarded" and "fart" comments, and it wasn't very funny, but it did bring up a good point. For anyone who can not take this 9i.e. uber Sony fans) the 360 has its own Killzones like Forza, only Forza did much better as a GT imitation than Killzone did of a Halo imitation.
bounchfx @ May 16th 2007 4:53PM
Wait - so when did killzone become good?
last I heard it was a mediocre fps on ps2.
Since when did pre rendered videos turn a shit game into an AAA one?
exactly. nice try killzone, but no one cares until you prove yourself.
rfom @ May 16th 2007 4:58PM
Funnily enough, the killzone publishers were adamant that they were not projecting KZ as a "halo-kiler"
I guess its a label used more often by xbots to pretend that Halo is all there is to gaming!
Phranctoast @ May 16th 2007 5:53PM
well, one thing we know is killzone 2 will completely destroy Halo 3 in the graphics dept. The developers really dont have to try all that hard to accomplish that feat.
Halo 3 hardly looks better then halo 2.

I said something similar over at PS3Fanboy.com. Basically, the only reason Killzone has hype is because Halo exists. You take away Halo, and what do you have? Another Sci Fi/military shooter that falls through the cracks because journalists don't care, and gamers never hear of it. However, the word that usually pops into people's heads when hearing the name Killzone is, in fact, Halo.

I was under the impression that it was Sony calling it a "Halo killer", which could explain why Guerilla had to play janitor and clean the mess up.
Mr Khan @ May 16th 2007 6:00PM
Wow, the one-ups-manship of the Sony v Microsoft thing is so exact, its disguisting
it basically determines that one will be a resounding success, and the other a drastic failure
Matt B @ May 16th 2007 9:15PM
IDK Mr. Khan and the rest of the haters.
The tight lipped, barely any info until this almost makes it sound like it could actually be a Halo Killer. Think about it... they had like 2 years to work on the thing and kept hype low til now. It could be crap, but who works for 2 years on what is going to be crap?
It could be a pleasant surprise to the hopeful.
Stevie Dunbar @ May 17th 2007 12:28AM
Needless to say, I won't be waiting for this like the Halo 3 beta.
Hatchetforce @ May 17th 2007 1:20AM
"I have always said that any game that has an online mode needs to go through a public beta to ensure it works as intended."
Killzone 1 had an online mode. Where was the public beta there? The MP there was a big corn encrusted steamer.
This is nothing more than attempting to keep up with the Joneses. In this case the Joneses have a bigger project, a better project, and their first name is Bungie.
