Someone needs to tell these cops that even if it was a gun, holding a gun in your own home isn't illegal. I can't believe they were following proper procedure. Why do we always hear false report stories and then no one calls when someone is really in trouble?

When I was in high school, on the way to school one day cops pulled over our schoolbus. The cops were looking for a gunman. Apparently some lady called the cops because a kid was shooting a gun on her front lawn.

It turned out to be a laser tag gun.

It was purple and orange.

It went "pew pew" when you hit the trigger.

Then of course we got yelled at when we were late to school.

Well, it's good to know at least some neighbors are trying to prevent their neighbors from getting murdered!

haha, I was gonna submit this. The whole event took place near my girlfriends place. Today has been a laughable day for British justice. The guy who's illegal dog killed his niece was sentenced to 7 months.

Daft place.

This was in the UK I believe, I am pretty sure handguns were illegal over there.

I remember shopping in Dukinfield Consoles (Daves game shop) so it is really strange seeing this on Joystiq!

Pathetic on how the police couldn't just apologise and even more pathetic that he may now face charges?

As someones mentioned, makes a mockery of the justice system here.

If this is the UK then he will get a really big payout. It is ridiculous the way that the government pays out, especially the NHS. If the doctor is negligent or in this case the police fine, but suing because the doctor couldn't save you or the police couldn't get their in time because of a traffic jam is just ridiculous. If a police-person falsely arrests you and you spend 4 years in prison fine, then sue the police-person that did it and the judge that sent you down, but the government is not responsible. Anyway it should be the neighbour that was taken in for wasting police time.

Well... that's pathetic. The police can't charge him for anything and have wrongfully arrested him, they deserve to be punished. Highly unlikely that will happen though.

Things to note:

The source of this story is the Daily Mail, so the credibility of the report goes right out the window. In their attempt to smear the police and stir up fear they probably forgot to mention that he was arrested for possession of a real firearm that wasn't registered, or something similar.

As for guns in the UK, they aren't necessarily illegal, but it's a hell of a lot harder to get a permit to own one than in the US.

As for suing the police, we don't have quite the same culture of suing everyone for everything over here. If he was wrongly arrested he'll get compensation, but it'll probably never make it to court.

As I said, though, with this being the Daily Mail I'd not be surprised if the real story was that this guy traded a chicken with his neighbour for a PS2. That's the level of accuracy and fear-mongering in their reporting.

I was tempted to bash the UK because of this, since the US gets torn to shreds every time something like this happens.

But I think the difference between you and us, guys, is that we're above that.

I would say this is very embarrassing on Microsoft’s part. For an event this huge, the beta dubbed “The biggest beta event in gaming history” and the huge campaign to buy Crackdown to get into the beta, and now it is not working at all. I am just bewildered because you would think that this should have been tested over and over again before today.

A majority of Microsoft products do not perform without their share of problems out of the box. After several patches and updates you begin to see what the product should have been when it was released in the first place. This is just another unfortunate example of this.

While I was going to college, my mom got a divorce from her scumbag second husband. I came home one day after she kicked him out, and was startled because I thought I saw a man standing on the other side of the door. I looked through the window in the front door, and I saw my life size Han Solo cardboard figure posed in the doorway. I asked my mom what was up, and she said she put the figure in the doorway to scare off my step-dad if he came snoopin' around the house, as if my Han Solo figure was a scarecrow.

My mom is crazy.

Actually I heard the story was, the man, David Willaims, called the police to complain about some kids prank calling him. When the police got there they saw the silhouette of the Lara statue and thought a gunman was in the place. They blocked the area off, raided it, and arrested Mr. Williams and held him for 13 hours.

@21 This is a story that has been picked up from the local paper (Manchester Evening News). The Daily Mail ran with the story the day later.

Original story:

http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/s/1006/1006910_cops_swoop_on_lara_croft_dummy.html

Dave ran/runs a local independant game shop called Dukinfield Consoles and has done for at least 10 years to my knowledge, he's a decent bloke as well

This story seems to be a case of the arresting officers taking him in to save their red faces over the Lara mistake.

I, uh, I mean.... How? For what? How could this have possibly have gone down?

"Look, the police can't do any thing about crank callers, except look at the logs and call them back to scare them. In fact, we probably could have told you this over the phone, why did we even come here? We should probably lea -OMG look at those guns!"
-"Sir, the assailant is only holding ONE gun."
"Yyyyeah, that's what I meant..."
"We have to get in there! Quickly! Who knows what could be going on while that shady, only kinda human looking figure holds that position, comepletely still!"

***Time passes, the figure with no visible gun, or really any features, doesn't move an inch... or breathes... uh yeah***

"What's going on here, where's the lady with the guns?"
-"GUN, sir"
"What he said"
"Um, you mean the statue?"
"That was a statue?"
"Yeah, you know, for lonely nerds. It's made out of plastic"
"I knew those were fake... Well, we can't just stand around here, we have already wasted enough time on one a pretty big and embarrassing mistake here, SOMEONE has to go to jail..."
"Why are you looking at me? I didin..."
"Shut up youuuuuuuuuuu CRIMINAL. You're coming with us!"
"For what?!"
"You know what!"
"Your stupidity?"
"Just go in the cell and shut up. There, talk to the guy who was arrested for walking his dog, kinda late-ish, and the 17 year-old who was arrested for helping that old lady across the street. That's called 'assault' around here, you know!"

I would endorse the law suit idea, but then they might not have enough money to hire new cops. I would assume they would have to fire the entire precinct since not one person even questioned the arrest for "possession of creepy dolls".

By bragging that your better than the Brits you have undone your argument. You see, by having to point out that your better you have infact lowered yourself down the level of a Brit. I am afraid that you have lost. Hang your head in shame young man.

Haha, classic. I was actually arrested for something slightly less stupid a few years ago. I was in a convoy to go see a Mad Max Marathon with a lot of people who were dressed in costume, and on the way to the theater they set up this whole event where we "chased" a tanker truck (aka followed in an orderly fashion a tanker truck that somebody had rented for the day). Soon as we pulled up to theater though, we were surrounded by no less than twenty squad cars yelling for us to get out of the cars with our hands up. Turns out some morons thought we were terrorists trying to steal gasoline from the tanker. Sat in a cell for almost 20 hours before we were let out, under the charge of "disrupting traffic" or somesuch. After a year in court it was finally thrown out due to lack of evidence.

The most aggravating thing was that half the cops that had come out left almost immediately after they saw what was going on, it was just one jerk traffic cop who was pissed that he'd driven all the way out there for nothing, and so decided to book all of us.

Probably the same thing here. Everybody overreacted, then some prick thought that the guy deserved to sit in a cell for the rest of the day for making him look like an idiot. Some things never change, no matter where you live.
