Whatever it may be, I hope it'll be cheap. Glad to hear Sony are going for the videogame download service... what's that? It's not video game, but video only as in movies and TV? I thought we were talking about a gaming system, not a wannabe ipod killer.

Warrior: Argh, I thought it was video game download. The new PSP ALMOST had my vote there. Although if they go with the name "Better PSP with Hardrive" then I'll pick one up just for the name.

we all know Microsoft is the owner of that "ipod killer" product. ;)

I do think it's video GAME download,

as for "refreshing", I'd be shocked if it's more than just cosmetic (or maybe replacing some parts of hardware with newer, more energy efficient and cheaper ones). Other than that, it will be the same machine.

makes no sense to make up with PSP2 when all your AAA games are coming out within next 6 months or so.

Sony PSP and the PS3 is crapastico! Sony is failing... They aienated users by flooding the market with those useless UMD movies. Meantime they are desperate to steal thunder from the DS. Sony is a JOKE.

yeah, what a horrible thing to try to compete in portable market. Stealing 34% of the said market from Nintendo who has monopolized that market for over a decade. Sold 21 million units worldwide in 2 years.

What a JOKE that was. Sony should DEFINITELY be ashamed of themselves.

@Kingofwale

You're the only one calling the Zune an "Ipod Killer" (Besides a few mindless people). Mircosoft never even said it was.

It would be cool if the UMD drive was a separate component and you uploaded your games from it to the PSP which would hold 10 or so titles - might make it thinner and your games could be jukeboxed

If the PSP had a 20GB hard drive (at least), it would be great. Sony had the lead on the widescreen iPod. It's got web-browsing capabilities, and can even act as a map device. I wish they'd realize what a possible gem they have, if only they'd pay more attention beyond games. BUT they should have more games by now.

Pay more attention beyond the games? What the hell? Seems like the PSP cares about everything BUT games. Read any gaming mag: they constantly bitch how the PSP is desperate for solid original titles. Plus Sony focused heavily on UMD movies (although that failed), music player capabilities, and now downloading television shows. Sony should realize that if they focused more on games they would probably have comparable sales to the DS. On a related note, what's the PS3's main problem (besides high price)?

Oh man, Skippy. You are soo right. Sony needs to actually focus on games for PSP. That would completely rock. That way, instead of over 50 titles currently in development from Sony alone, we could totally have like 300 or maybe even more...

fucking moron.

Skippy, lack of games and/or lack of original games is a tired farce desperately spread by nintendo and the ilk. The fact is, the PSP has hundreds of original titles, as many if not more as the DS. And the percentage of ports on the system is small in relation to its original titles. One other thing to note is that the PSP has more critically acclaimed titles than the DS has.

Will they just stop making the thing? Its been what, 4 years or 5? and its only sold 7.4 Million units, oh and what happened to the UMD movies at Bestbuy or on commercials. Oh they stopped making them my bad. I don't understand why sony keeps trying to plug the sinking ship. Just give up already.

If they'd add a GPS to it, I'd buy one. Seems like it would be pretty sweet to have 1 thing that is a GPS, MediaPlayer, Games player, and rudimentary internet access device with a good (8 hours) battery life with a decently sized screen.

On another note, they should put a small battery INTO the device that lasts say, 10 minutes so that if you have 2-3 spare batteries, you could swap them without missing a beat.

Really? I'm the one who has to jump this?

"Will they just stop making the thing? Its been what, 4 years or 5? and its only sold 7.4 Million units, oh and what happened to the UMD movies at Bestbuy or on commercials. Oh they stopped making them my bad. I don't understand why sony keeps trying to plug the sinking ship. Just give up already."

Actually, as of this last March, it's been 2 years. Which makes it only 6 months older, in the US, than the 360. While it ONLY sold 7.4 million in the US alone, that's compared to 5.4 Million with a 6 month lead. ZOMG, 360 is teh phailz, they should quit making em.

Also, PSP saw sales spikes recently in the US and Europe. Also, my Best Buy has a 20' section of UMD movies. Not that I buy them, but they are there.

So why is Sony trying to plug a sinking ship? Because, as a console more successful than the 360 and for a while, outpacing PS2, it's not really sinking.

I don't have access at work to see if what you are saying is true but I would love to see some evidence to support your claims.

Doug Kaplan,

As of 12-31-06 the psp had 1,088 available software titles. Now obviously not all of these get reviewed however as of 01-07-2007 gamerankings listed 117 that received good/great/excellent - 24 more than the ds and of those 117, 86 (26%) were non-ports.

...& if you want to ignore the 117 acclaimed, as of 01-03-06 gamerankings listed 245 of the 1K+ psp titles & of those, 58 were ports - which is roughly 23%

I think I would like to see those same stats but for the DS and also something more recent since the DS has had some huge releases since the beginning of the year.

Also, not to accuse you of lying but those numbers, especially the total games released for the PSP seem suspect but since I can't go on any website to see for myself, I have to take your word for it.

Doug, yes the psp has had some huge releases since the beginning of the year as well. My total software figure is from:
http://www.pspfanboy.com/2007/05/17/sgs-07-sony-releases-latest-sales-statistics/
and I believe that site is on the same and/or similar server as joystiq so you should be able to view it.
