Supporting up to 32 players in battle, Confrontation will launch with five North African themed maps, with further map packs becoming available for download in the PlayStation Store. Outside of conflict, the game will allow you to set up tournaments and clans, access leader boards and completely customize your soldier's appearance. Generally, you'll want to go with a constant frown on that virtual mug. Blissfully smiling soldiers are just begging for bullets, you know.
SOCOM Confrontation is scheduled for release during the holiday season on the PlayStation Network.

I used to play the hell out of the Socom games online. My dad only has a PS2 and that was a game we all enjoyed. Socom online is fun and has its perks. However, it truly is crushed by games like GRAW and R6V when it comes to realistic console shooters. The gameplay feels jagged and awkward. Cheaters and hackers overran a big chunk of the games. The big levels were often big in a dumb way and you could wait up to 10 minutes for a game to end if you died right away.
Basically, Socom got me into online shooters and when I had virtually nothing to compare it to, it rocked. But after playing UT3 and Counterstrike on PC for a while, as well as GRAW, R6V, COD2, and Gears online, I don't have any desire to pick up Socom.
Socom was basically an online shooter for PS2 owners with no other way to shoot online. It was cool, though, when they released their fourth and final installment with all the maps from the other games on it.

Compare it to GRAW (I or II) or Rainbow Six..
It looks like an original XBOX game.

What bothers me is other than a little more eye candy, and hopefully less of the notorious SOCOM II lag, what are we seeing? Let's hope there is more up their sleeve. Not that SOCOM needed much more.
And 32 players is far too many for Crossroads so I hope this is part of a larger map. More info here:

the voice recognition and AI squad management was truly next-gen to me back THEN. Ghost Recon could never even touch Zipper voice recog. and super next-gen GRAW series scrapped it altogether.
this is a HUGE let down for one my favorite Sony franchises. same could be said for Warhawk actually.
i am NOT liking this trend from Sony....... "Blu-Ray iz for GAMEZ" ????

That said, SOCOM rocks and has never really looked all that great- I'm sure it'll still be great squad-based action even if it looks crappy, but it'd be nice if a game on a $600 system looked like it was on a $600 system.

If it remains online only, I'd like them to include online muli-player against computer A.I. ala combined assault.
Seems like they'll be waiting a little longer to really "evolve the series" While I haven't played GRAW, Rainbow Six, or Gears... it seems the next SOCOM would have to incorporate some sort of Cover system if it wants to compete.
One last gripe... 32 player games just don't work in the socom universe... it really screws up the pacing / coordination. It work's in resistance but that's a different beast.

Absolutely loved SOCOM I and II (3 got a little odd) but it wasn't for the graphics. It was much more the team strategy stuff in single-user. The spray-and-pray online FPS stuff is okay, but I also like games with a little more logic in them. A shame this one won't be there initially.
That said, I thought the graphics weren't bad, but I was more impressed with the sound. The gunshots sounded excellent, which I love, but my neighbors won't.
