So Team ICO's working on a new game for the PlayStation 3. Not altogether surprising considering that ICO and Shadow of the Colossus remain two of the most well respected and well received video games on the PlayStation 2. But what if we told you that one internet forum rumor had them working on not one, but two games for Sony's high-def colossus? One is even rumored to be "close to ICO and Shadow of the Colossus in terms of atmosphere and setting."
Though we didn't hear anything at Sony's Gamer's Day event, a source deep within Sony's corporate bowels brushed himself off and revealed this exclusive screenshot to us, seen above (note: we're not serious, but we wish we were). Would two more masterpieces from Fumito Ueda's team brighten Sony's spirits (and sales figures)?

I believe the 2nd title is rumored to be a PSN title, possibly.
Regardless, my interest is peaked. I loved Shadow of the Colossus.

SotC was a fantastic game. That is actually one title which, in addition to the next GT and Metal Gear, will convince me to buy a PS3. Also, that picture never gets old.

Would they be good games? It seems most likely.
Will they be SYSTEM sellers? That's hard to say; I'm leaning towards no.

System sellers? No. Good sellers? Half no. ICO failed to receive the sales necessary to reach Greatest Hits status. SOTC, however, was agreat seller. Not much of a system seller, though.
But let's put it this way. Does every game NEED to be a system seller? That's the goal, of course. But a game can be great and still only appeal to the installed base. These two games will be niche, yes. But what is wrong with a niche game?

All along this whole PS3 disaster I've been cringing because I know that, however much of a fiasco the console is, at some point Team ICO would be making a PS3 game, and even if it was the only game that interested me on the PS3 I'd have to buy the console.
It's the very definition of a system seller for me.

Just think. Even if the PS3 was discontinued it would be a cool console to show off in about twenty years. Like the saturn is now or 3DO.

I have a Saturn... I had a 3D0. Reason why I HAD a 3D0? Only so many times you can laugh at the daisy chaining controllers before it gets old...
Seriously. Console only had one plug in. You plugged new controllers into the previous one.

A Ueda game is the one thing that _will_ make me regret not having a PS3. MGS4, I can live without.

I guess we'll have to wait until mini E3 or TGS.

@perfectchaos,
Maybe not huge system sellers. But I did buy a PS2 just for ICO. And my mate bought his for SotC.
Team ICO's PS3 games would be a system seller for me.

What's with all this damn positive Sony news. Write something positive about the 360 :( Freaking Sony hogging all the spot light with there fancy video games, and game show.

Those who speak of system sellers miss the point. Not everyone buys a system for just 1 game. The best thing the PS2 has its overall library strength. A price drop, along with the Team Ico stuff and the release of what was shown at gamers day is all Sony needs.

No seriously, that picture is incredible. Someone must have been looking at his dog, saying "he looks almost like the Colossus, I just got to get some crazy headgear on him (her?)"

"hmmmm
SotC with Gears graphics! Two thumbs up."
Considering that Shadow of the Colossus, while a very artistic game, was not at all graphic-intensive (textures would pop out of no where), it'd be a better prediction to say that this next game won't really push the limits of the PS3 hardware. Maybe it'll have Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 graphics.

I will buy a PS3 only when the ICO team releases a game for it.
That will justify my $600 purchase.

As I a pretty huge Miyamoto fan, I can say that the idea of an Ico or SotC type game exculsive for the PS3 makes the system a lot more tempting than Little Big Planet or Loco Roco 2 do.
Non-Nintendo fans assume that it's got to be cute or silly to be appealing to Nintendo fans. Not so. It has to be deep, creative, and done with geniune respect for the medium. That's what most Nintendo fans want.
And that's what you get from Ico and Shadow of the Collosus. Little Big Planet? Not so much.

Actually, Shadow of the Colossus was quite graphics intensive for the PS2. It has a pretty good draw distance, detailed textures, high dynamic range rendering, and motion blur, none of which come cheap. The developers really pushed the hardware to come as close as possible to the look they were trying to create. With the PS3, they can come even closer.

Shadow of the Colossus was a fantastic game, no doubt about it, but I'm afraid you are mistaken when you describe it as graphic intensive. God of War I and II push the PS2 hardware. SotC, not so much. Draw distance and motion blur were great, testaments to fantastic art direction, but let's not kid ourselves. The textures were very muddy, objects were blocky, pop-up was extremely frequent, and the frame rate can start to chug in the middle of a fight. A lot of those effects used to give those effects that were key components in its art style have been used in other games of the generation that featured more visual polish.
From how I understand it, the design team behind Ico and SotC spend a good deal more time on a title's experience without focusing too much on pure "polygon porn," if I may use the phrase.
