Grand Theft Auto IV special edition announced at $90
Perhaps taking a cue from their Take-Two comrades working on BioShock's limited edition, the team at Rockstar have announced the contents of a Grand Theft Auto IV special edition, scheduled to launch alongside the far less special PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 editions on October 16 and 19 in North America and Europe, respectively. Included in the Grand Theft Auto metal safety deposit box packaging will be: the game, an art book, a soundtrack CD "featuring new material from top artists, only available on this release," a Rockstar keychain for the safety deposit box keys (the thing actually locks?), and a limited edition Rockstar duffel bag. All this can be yours for the low, low price of $89.99.
In addition to considering all of the illegal things one could hide in the duffel bag and deposit box, we're left wondering if there's some sort of gentleman's bet going on behind the game publishing scene, pushing the limits of precisely how much random stuff one can jam into a special edition release and still get people to pay for it. Sorry GTA IV but, at $130, Halo 3's legendary edition still wins this round.

Hahahahahahahahaha!
ChuckSteak0331 @ May 21st 2007 6:04PM
Wow, more companies want to try raping gamers?
ChuckSteak0331 @ May 21st 2007 6:06PM
This is horrible!
Vidikron @ May 21st 2007 6:06PM
LOL... I like the whole lockbox idea. I'm personally not going to pay $90 USD for it, but I kind of like having these limited editions available. Japan gets a lot of this sort of stuff.
Vidikron @ May 21st 2007 6:07PM
@2
How exactly are they 'raping' gamers? As long as a normal version is also available I don't really see the issue.
Matias @ May 21st 2007 6:10PM
So this coming for pc only or something? or is this for both the PS3 and 360.
Ramsey K @ May 21st 2007 6:12PM
Funny, $90 is still less than what us UK gamers pay for non-LE games (£50). I expect to be paying $120+ for this if I want to get it :(
EvoAnubis @ May 21st 2007 6:12PM
Well, i'm not hurting for money. 90 bucks? Okay, I'm sold.
polly @ May 21st 2007 6:18PM
GTFO.
Alexander @ May 21st 2007 6:28PM
YES I RESERVED THE REGULAR FOR XBOX 360 AND IM RESERVING SPECIAL EDITION FOR PS3
brian @ May 21st 2007 6:32PM
ill just burn the game for $1.25, best deal around
BPM @ May 21st 2007 6:45PM
Welcome to the next-gen. :V
Seriously, though, that sounds like a pretty cool package. However, I'm not even interested in GTA, so... [shrugs]
Anonymous @ May 21st 2007 6:55PM
I am personally interested in this decision but I think the items they chose to go with are dumb...
concept art I understand, a soundtrack I understand, a metal safe to keep it in sounds neat but the key and duffel bag seem like a stupid idea, if they had something other than that I would buy this immediately
Kompressor @ May 21st 2007 6:57PM
this is why I never buy this limited edition bullshit, the only time I did was when I preordered halo 2's collectors edition the summer before it came out because of a MTV store mistake and got it for $40
kingofwale @ May 21st 2007 7:03PM
130 bucks for a Helmet that's too small to put on your head?
Heck, at least the bag isn't mini-sized too.
Leshrac @ May 21st 2007 7:48PM
I agree, they're not "raping" gamers... they're "raping" idiots. But even idiots don't deserve to be "raped".

It's not rape if you consent.
Joshua @ May 21st 2007 8:17PM
To clarify my first comment, there's no way I'd pay for something like this, but I'm sure GTA otaku will.
wackychan @ May 21st 2007 8:20PM
I'm gonna get this case and lock Mario Galaxy inside of it. If my friends see it, I know they'll call me a homo.
BPM @ May 21st 2007 8:48PM
Wackychan, if they'd call you "homo" for that, then they have insecurity issues.
Seriously, how frickin' young are your friends if they think Mario is "olo omg teh gh4y"?
wackychan @ May 21st 2007 8:50PM
they are in their mid 20s.

A MESSAGE TO GAME COMPANIES:
UNTIL YOU BEGIN TO ALTER THE ACTUAL GAME ITSELF, SUCH AS ADD IN ADDITIONAL GAME CONTENT, THEREFORE MAKING THE GAME ITSELF WORTH THE EXTRA MONEY, I AND MANY OTHERS WILL NOT BE BUYING YOUR "SPECIAL EDITION" GAMES. I DON'T GIVE A FUCK HOW YOUR GAME WAS MADE, NOR DO I CARE ABOUT A METAL CASE OR A DAMN KEYCHAIN OR DUFFEL BAG. THESE THINGS DO NOT JUSTIFY AN EXTRA $10-70 SPENT ON A GAME. GIVE ME BONUS MAPS, WEAPONS, CARS, CHARACTERS...ANYTHING, BUT PLEASE FOR GOD SAKE STOP PEDDLING THESE CHEAPO ADD-ONS TO ME EXPECTING ME TO PAY EXTRA MONEY FOR THEM.
wackychan @ May 21st 2007 11:10PM
@dsub
In the words of the great Maddox, if you can just move your left pinky about half an inch over from the "A" key you'll find what we call a CAPS LOCK button. Use that shit, asshole!
Mat @ May 22nd 2007 2:17AM
I laugh at you all! I am a original Neo-Geo owner from back in the 90's and still love SNK, so before you start bitchin and complaining, try paying upward of 300 for one game, some of which fetch over 1000 as collectors items
doomcloud @ May 22nd 2007 9:30AM
i dont know why everyone's vagina is hurting about this one. the gta soundtracks are always great and are certainly worth a few extra bucks. Also GTA branded merch isnt appealing to me, but im sure it is to alot of people, maybe even more after this game comes under fire from the religious right, which is already starting. whats wrong with options, rockstar already said they were going to introduce downloadable content.
and im sorry joystiq but its far more pathetic to spend an extra $70 for an f'ing spartan helmet and a two disc doc about how bungie made an overhyped update for halo 2.
baby sea tuna @ May 22nd 2007 10:12AM
As someone who pre-ordered the LE Halo3, I feel that shit like this is partially my fault...and for that, I apologize.
That said, I partially blame thieving scumfucks like #11 for how expensive games (CDs, DVDs, etc.) are in the first place. Just like shoplifting, stealing games causes a bump in price and for that, I hope you brick your console.
Ghost @ May 22nd 2007 2:59PM
CAN I PREORDER IT?
Rukus13 @ May 23rd 2007 8:19AM
I preordered my GTA a long time ago.
Welcome to the new world folks, it's time for ps3, 360, & what ever else comes along to nickel and dime our ass. I’m a big gamer so it better be worth it.
I'm ok with this cause I make good money but you guys saying "want fries with that" better step you game up.
Bobby @ May 27th 2007 8:49PM
Whatever on the Special Edition thing. I want to know why they have not released any dates on releasing this to PC. They would be stupid not to have it for pc and loose all that money they could gain by letting us guys buy it to. I am deeply deeply hurt.lol. PC can top PS3 graphics any day and it would be stupid to have it for only Ps3 and Xbox only. They just want people to go out and buy a PS3. I hope the PS3 comes with a jar of vasoline because my cheeks will hurt after I buy it.
cj @ Jun 7th 2007 3:51PM
why isn't it for PS2?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
christian @ Jul 23rd 2007 3:17PM
why cant i buy it know and why isnt in ps2
