Molyneux talks death in Fable 2, regrets Black and White 2
According to Peter Molyneux, death in Fable 2 will be different than what we've seen in any other game. Fan website Loinhead (not a typo) recently landed an interview with Molyneux and they had a little chat about Fable 2, Black and White 2 and exposition ruining immersion. Right off the bat the Black and White 2 issues get taken care of. Molyneux admits the problems are a "list" and although there is plenty of blame to go around, ultimately they were "forced to finish the game." The money just ran out. He says if he could go back and do it again, they'd have started from scratch instead of looking back on Black and White, using that code as a jumping off point, and building from there. Molyneux says, "I wish we could go back to the start of the development ... start with a blank sheet of paper and plan it better."
But that's the past, Molyneux says that one of the big announcements coming up about Fable 2 involves death (although Molyneux gives it proper dramatic fashion in the video after the break). He says that death isn't handled well in most games, "You go back in time twenty minutes to do the same thing over again. That's fine if I'm playing a platformer, not so fine if you're doing an RPG game." World of Warcraft has the death run, Prey turned death into a minigame ... we'll just have to see how Fable 2 handles the life hereafter. Wonder if the dog goes through the same issue when he dies, or maybe the dog fetches you from the afterlife?

For those of you wearing panties, don't get them in a wad just yet. It'll be a while before this game drops.
Diskoboy @ May 21st 2007 8:59PM
Black & White 2 wasn't that bad. A bit too short, compared to the first...
But that expansion pack just plain blew.

Jeez wacky, don't get your panties in a bunch, nobody is trying to talk how bad this game pwns yet.
Although I did like the first one and am looking forward to the second. Hopefully it is harder and longer than the first one.
That came out gay but I'm comfortable enough with my manhood to not change it, but not quite comfortable enough to not set up a defense to pre-pubescent homophobic comments about it.
Jeez you kids need to grow up.

Wasn't Fable 1 supposed to be different than what we've seen in any other game?
Gavin @ May 21st 2007 9:09PM
Oh yeah, NOW he regrets B&W 2!!! Hey Pete, how about you refund my $50 for B&W and then another $50 for the awful sequel. Then, I'll think about forgiving you. Also, stop laying on the B.S. about how each game you come out with is going to revolutionize the genre.
Jake @ May 21st 2007 9:19PM
Martez,
Yes, Peter uber-hyped Fable. It was a fun game, but short and easy and fell short of expectations. There were some unique elements that helped to make it fun. It had almost Sims like elements with courting and making babies. I thought it had a fun combat system.

I kind of believe that all of Molyneux's games have actually been very, very good games. The main thing they could be faulted for is not living up to the hype. I think Molyneux is too smart and too visionary to miss the target all the time :P so one day he'll produce (another) epic.
wackychan @ May 21st 2007 9:39PM
Whats the matter Jake? You cant take a fuckin joke? Lighten up a little man.
dishwasherlove @ May 21st 2007 9:42PM
I actually enjoyed Black and White 2. Maybe there is something wrong with me?
Grog @ May 21st 2007 9:46PM
Actually, I think it's because you just aren't funny, wackychan.
Vanth88 @ May 21st 2007 9:50PM
I agree with Peter when he talks about you being the character. Think about it, if you want to talk to a NPC then you press A and you wave your hand which obviously means Hello but lets say you want to piss him off then you use an expression(which means you "express" yourself) and you could flick him off or fart or say "come on!" and if you wanted to be friendly then you could express this using... well anything thats not rude, mean or anything like that.
I can't wait for Fable 2 and if its just like Fable 1 then of course I'll buy it.
wackychan @ May 21st 2007 9:57PM
10. Actually, I think it's because you just aren't funny, wackychan.
I cant help it that your sucking on the devils Wii! Your on the DarkSide buddy, I don't expect you to laugh at my jokes.
elmer @ May 21st 2007 10:00PM
Did any of you play Wonder Project J on the SNES?
It really feels like Peter's building up to remaking it 15 years later.
eldee @ May 21st 2007 10:44PM
I probably would've shat myself if Molyneux stared at me with that goofy grin and said "think about death... think about it".
Sounds like a threat to me! *Punch*
:)

First off Fable 1 Rockz. Second B&W 1 rockz, 2 is okay....And please believe any RPG where I can actually have a wife, kids, pet, and choose whether I'm good or evil ROCKZ...This will revolutionize the genre and make the Final Fantasy series actually try to catch up with companies like Lion Head and BioWare which people sleep on. I love Square Soft but they really need to give me something new...Definitely tired of playing set story RPGs they are so last millenium
Guiltyspark @ May 21st 2007 10:48PM
I never really played the first Fable but it looked different. In a good way. If I had the chance I might have tried it out.
I did play black and white 1 and just couldn't get into it. I really liked the idea of my creature becoming evil and eating ppl but It just never came to that often enough.
I will probably end up getting Fable 2 if My brother doesn't get to it first...He loved Fable 1 and has beatin all the offshoots of it like 200 times lol.
kered @ May 21st 2007 11:13PM
Great! I just bought these pair. Man, my balls are chaffing.
Purple Haze @ May 21st 2007 11:35PM
I'm pretty sure there was no innvation in fable that i care about, unless being less than 5 hours long on first playthrough and not being able to do anything worth while after finishing it count.
electronic @ May 22nd 2007 6:05AM
Nice Edward Gorey picture, just got one of his books today. Sounds like Pete's coming up with some more ideas, I hope they get put into practice and succeed.
rDr4g0n @ May 22nd 2007 9:06AM
Ya know, its getting annoying hearing developers say "we had to finish the product." even if that IS the case, it seems like they are ALWAYS being rushed to finish. Usually when you realize that your last project was too close to the deadline, you create a longer deadline for your next project.
Since teh producers want to make money off of the game that they are paying to have developed, wouldnt they rather have a quality game released to ensure sequels?
Joseph Villalobos @ May 22nd 2007 10:26AM
Was B&W2 really that bad?
Casey R Williams @ May 22nd 2007 12:03PM
I loved Fable. Maybe I missed the hype, and didn't realsie how short it fell of what was promised. That said it was one of the most engaging, entertaining and just plain lovely games I've ever played. More of the same wouldn't be bad just disappointing.
Anthony33 @ May 22nd 2007 12:34PM
@19
I was just about to mention Edward Gorey. The book that picture is taken from is great btw.

'My cat fell down the well can you help me get it out?'
